Home Sweet ‘Efficient’ Home
Touchstone Energy ®
The power of human connections
hether you're in the market
for a new manufactured
home or looking for ways Wto use less electricity in your existing
home, energy efficiency should be a
top priority. Like site-built homes,
manufactured homes can be designed
for energy efficiency. The
energy investments you make
today will yield savings in the
form of lower energy bills for
years to come.
When buying a new home,
ask your dealer about
efficiency upgrades. If you
already own your home,
making changes now can
lower your energy bills,
improve your comfort and
increase your home's resale
value.
“When it comes to energy
efficiency, the primary focus
is on how you heat or cool
your home and the steps you
take to keep that conditioned air
inside,” Rhonda Byrd-Lee, Manager,
Energy Services says.
There are many ways to increase
the energy efficiency of a
manufactured home. Some steps you
can do yourself, and others require the
skills of trained professionals.
Heating and cooling
Your home's heating and cooling
system accounts for about 50 percent
of your monthly energy usage, so a
high-efficiency heat pump is a wise
investment.
“If purchasing a new home, upgrade
your heating and cooling unit to an
energy-efficient heat pump,” says
Byrd-Lee. “Your monthly mortgage
bill could be a few dollars higher, but
you will more than make up for it in
energy savings.”
Considering the relatively small
extra cost for the ENERGY STAR
option (typically $5 to $10 to a
monthly loan payment), a heat pump
could save you as much as $150 a
month in electricity costs just during
the winter.
If you already own your home,
Byrd-Lee says a new heat pump is a
wise investment. “An electric
heat pump uses about a third
less energy to supply the
same heat as a furnace.”
It's also important to clean
and service your unit
annually, and to clean or
replace air filters monthly.
Keep vents clean and
unobstructed, and arrange
your furniture to allow air to
flow freely. Also consider the
placement of your thermostat.
Be sure it is located away
from heat sources such as
fireplaces, stoves or
windows, to ensure accurate
readings.
Insulation
Insulation is often the biggest
energy flaw in older manufactured
homes. The crawl space under your
home offers access to some of its most
important energy details. It's worth
taking the time to inspect this often-
neglected area. Your mobile home was
designed and built with insulation in
the floor, and a layer of fiberboard or
“belly paper” to protect this insulation
and the plumbing lines above it. This
protective layer often gets damaged by
animals, weather and deterioration
over time, leaving your home exposed
to outdoor air that robs energy in both
winter and summer.
Replace any missing insulation with
fiberglass batts, then repair any
damage you find in the belly. Use
plywood and screws to repair any
damaged fiberboard. Use belly paper
(purchased at a mobile home supply
shop) and construction adhesive to
repair any torn paper.
In a new home, ask your dealer to
upgrade the insulation in your floors
to R-19. Ceiling insulation should be a
minimum of R-28. Homes with fourinch
exterior walls should have R11-
13 insulation, and six-inch walls
should have R-19 insulation. Also
request insulated windows that help
seal your home, keeping conditioned
air inside and the weather outside.
Ductwork
Leaky ductwork can be one of the
biggest contributors to high bills in
manufactured homes.
Your home's ductwork is probably
installed beneath the floor. Check to
see if any of this ductwork is exposed
and or if any joints are loose or
disconnected. Carefully inspect the
area immediately under your heating
unit. If you live in a double-wide,
inspect the “cross-over duct” that
connects the heating system in each
half of the home. The crossoverduct
often becomes
disconnected and it is commonly
found problem when conducting
energy audits on doublewide homes.
If you find disconnected ducts or
loose joints, seal them with metal duct
tape or with duct mastic.
Proper skirting will prevent damage
and the free flow of air under your
home, shielding your home from the
outside elements, and protecting your
ductwork from damage.
Sealing the cracks
During both the heating and cooling
seasons, it can be costly to have air
leaking (or “infiltrating”) in and out of
your home. Manufactured homes are
susceptible to air infiltration because
they are usually installed off the
ground.
Whether or not your home is new,
be sure to check these areas:
•Around door and window frames.
•Wherever penetrations through the
manufactured home envelope exist,
including: gas, electric, water,
telephone and TV cable penetrations;
heating and cooling system flues, air
ducts and ventilation fan ducts.
•At edges and seams of the belly
board.
•Wherever the interior finish is
penetrated, as for plumbing fixtures
(especially the bathtub) and electrical
outlets, switch plates and fixtures.
•At seams, joints and holes in the
interior paneling, including wall-floor,
wall-ceiling and wall-wall junctures.
There are several things you can
easily do to stop air infiltration:
caulking, weatherstripping, installing
gaskets behind electrical outlet and
light switch plates, and sealing kitchen
and bathroom vents.
Placement of your home
The best site for your home is one
that provides the best natural summer
coolness and winter warmth as
possible. Plant shade trees around
your home – particularly on the
western side -- taking care not to plant
trees under power lines. Your home's
orientation can also affect its energyefficiency.
It will be exposed to more
warmth in the winter (and less in the
summer) if the long side – the side
with the most windows – faces the
south.
Other ways to save
Using less energy in your home is as
simple as practicing good energy
habits. Adjust your thermostat to 78
degrees in the summer and 68 degrees
in the winter. Change your heating and
cooling unit's filter at least once a
month. Use a clothes line instead of a
dryer. Adjust your water heater
temperature to 120 degrees, and wash
clothes in cold water when possible.
“We all have control over how we
use energy,” says Byrd-Lee. “Making
small lifestyle changes can make a
tremendous difference in our energy
usage.”
Installing A Programmable Thermostat
Can Help Lower Your Energy Bill
Source: Touchstone Energy® Cooperatives' Home Energy Savings Guide
Did you know that properly using a
programmable thermostat in your
home is one of the easiest ways you
can save energy and money? An
ENERGY STAR qualified
programmable thermostat helps make
it easy for you to save by offering four
pre-programmed settings to regulate
your home's temperature in summer
and winter.
The pre-programmed settings that
come with ENERGY STAR qualified
programmable thermostats are
intended to deliver savings without
sacrificing comfort. Depending on
your family's schedule, you can see
significant savings by sticking with
those settings or adjusting them
accordingly. The key is to establish a
program that automatically reduces
heating and cooling in your home
when you don't need it as much.
The pre-programmed settings for an
ENERGY STAR qualified
programmable thermostat are:
Which Programmable Thermostat
is Right for Me?
To decide which model is best for
you, think about your schedule and
how often you are away from home
for regular periods of time – work,
school, and other activities – then
decide which of the models best fits
your schedule: the 7-day; 5+2-day or
the 5-1-1-day.
7-day models are best if your daily
schedule tends to change. For
example, if children are at home
earlier on some days. They give you
the most flexibility, letting you set
different programs for different days.
5+2-day models use the same
January 2010
schedule every weekday and another
for weekends.
5-1-1 models are best if you tend to
keep one schedule Monday-Friday
and another schedule on Saturdays
and Sundays.4421302
Installation
Install your programmable
thermostat unit on an interior wall
away from heating and cooling vents
and other sources of heat or drafts.
Remember to read all instructions and
proceed carefully. If the job requires
more than just a replacement, call a
certified HVAC professional to ensure
proper installation as well as operation
of your heating and cooling system.
It's a good idea to upgrade an old
manual thermostat to a programmable
unit if you are replacing your system
because programmable thermostats
are far more accurate and will
maximize the efficiency of your new
bedtime.
temporarily make an area warmer or
cooler, without erasing the pre-set
programming. This override is
cancelled automatically at the next
program period. You use more energy
(and end up paying more on energy
bills) if you consistently “hold” or
over-ride the pre-programmed
settings.
3. Units typically have two types of
hold features: (a) hold / permanent /
vacation; (b) temporary. Avoid using
the hold/permanent/vacation feature to
manage day to day temperature
settings. “Hold” or “vacation” features
are best when you're planning to be
away for an extended period. Set this
feature at a constant, efficient
temperature (i.e. several degrees
warmer temperature in summer;
several degrees cooler during winter),
when going away for the weekend or
vacation. You'll waste energy and
money if you leave the “hold” feature
at the comfort setting while you're
away. 7909802
4. Cranking your unit up to 90
degrees or down to 40 degrees, for
Statement of Non-Discrimination
example, will not heat or cool your
home any faster. Most thermostats,
including ENERGY STAR rated units,
begin to heat or cool at a set time, to
reach set-point temperatures sometime
thereafter. Units with adaptive
recovery features are an exception to
this rule.
5. Many homes use just one
thermostat to control the whole house.
If your home has multiple heating or
cooling zones, you'll need a
programmed setback thermostat for
each zone to maximize comfort,
convenience and energy savings
throughout the house.
6.If your programmable thermostat
runs on batteries, don't forget to
change the batteries each year. Some
units will indicate when batteries must
be changed.
Page 8
I was hunting ducks before there
was an Alabama lifetime hunting
license, before there was an
Alabama state duck stamp, and the
bag limit was determined by a
point system that assigned numeric
values to each species of
waterfowl. All that means is that
I'm older than swamp mud when it
comes to duck hunting.
Each year, many aspiring wing
shooters want to expand the scope
of their sport to include duck
hunting. It is a unique sport that
has at its core some die-hard
followers. Entering the duck
hunting fraternity requires
something of a right of passage.
Part of that entry includes some
basics that govern personal safety
and comfort, as well as some
common practices of hunter
courtesy. 6263001
The purchase of a license, a duck
stamp, a set of waders and some
steel shot does not immediately
qualify anyone as a duck hunter.
True duck hunters are tempered
through lack of sleep, freezing rain,
growling stomachs, and unbearable
boat rides up a cold river swamp.
During the course of their
development, duck hunters quickly
learn to wear proper clothing and
always have a back-up plan for dry
clothes. At some point in time, they
are going to be completely
submerged in freezing water. They
also come to learn that the
investment in a floating gun case is
not the frivolous expenditure they
once thought it was. The same can
be said for graduating to purchase
the more expensive and well
insulated chest waders. It's the
closest thing to a space suit that a
duck hunter will ever wear . . . and
is every bit as important!
As apprentice duck hunters
explore the sport alongside more
experienced water fowlers, they
come to understand the importance
of maps, navigation, GPS and
proper boat lighting. Above all
else, duck hunters recognize the
necessity of wearing personal
floatation devices while boating
through the darkness in subfreezing
temperatures. Becoming
lost, frozen, or drowning, are all
circumstances that can be avoided
through proper planning and
attention to safety procedures.
Courtesy is also a major part of
the sport. If, when approaching the
hunting area, a light is seen
flashing back in your direction,
you are too late. The duck hunter,
who elected to get up earlier this
morning, has successfully claimed
your location. His beacon is
signaling that there is no need for
you to drop decoys or continue
your approach. All that should be
done is to reverse your course and
find another location, or plan to get
up earlier next time. It is a
common courtesy of the sport to
respect the early arrival of another
duck hunter.
A trained retriever is a valuable
asset to a hunt and assists in
preventing the loss or waste of
game. An untrained retriever is the
worst nightmare ever put into a
boat of decoys. I have suffered
through barkers, biters, squatters,
and duck eaters. Showing up with
an untrained porch-sitter is the
quickest way for a group of hunters
to lose your phone number.
Any beginning duck hunter can
certainly wear ten calls on a
lanyard around his neck. But it is
Current Light Flashes

wise not to blow one unless you
are asked to contribute. I have had
the privilege of hunting with one of
the best duck callers in the world.
Even after twenty years of hunting,
there is nothing I could have
produced on a duck call that would
have lifted my standing in his
presence. It was far better to watch
and listen to a true master at work.
Sometimes, it's more important to
know, when NOT to blow.
Pick your shot and respect the
game. Regardless of how much
your gun costs or what choke and
shell combination you are
shooting, a shotgun has limits. It's
a simple law of physics. You are
shooting a shotgun, not an intergalactic
laser. By allowing the
birds to work the decoys, rather
than “sky-busting”, you will be
revered by your hunting partners.
More importantly, you will become
more successful at making clean
shots, rather than wounding game.
It is important for those who are
entering the sport of duck hunting
to understand the big picture of the
experience. Any attempt to
measure the true quality of duck
hunting based on the amount of
“game taken” would be an insult to
the hunters who enjoy and
contribute to the pursuit of
waterfowl hunting. Some new
hunters will elect to dabble in the
sport and will eventually fall away.
Those of us who have chosen to
stay, year after year, are completely
absorbed by it.6086301
Duck hunting, when done
properly, is one of the most
beautiful hunting sports in the
world. It's the sunrises, the calls,
the wings, the water, and those
long retrieves that combine to
flood the senses.
In duck hunter's terms,
“Anything beyond that . . . is just
gravy”.
“I Want To Be The Best Parent
I Can Be” And Healthy Families North
Florida Can Help!
Healthy Families North Florida is
part of a nationally-accredited
statewide system of voluntary,
community-based home visiting
programs serving Calhoun,
Holmes, Jackson, Washington and
many other area counties. Healthy
Families home visitors partner with
parents to help children grow to
their full potential physically,
emotionally and socially. Families
can enroll in Healthy Families
during pregnancy or at the birth of
a child and can continue receiving
services for up to five years.
During home visits, Healthy
Families home visitors provide
parents with information on child
development, positive parent-child
interaction, home safety and other
topics such as safe infant sleep,
drowning prevention and car
safety. They also connect families
to health care providers and other
community services to meet their
January 2010
unique needs and encourage
parents to set and achieve goals
including finding employment,
continuing their education or
enrolling in job training. 335201
Successful families are the
foundation of a healthy community
and strong economy. Healthy
Families' intensive, long-term
services have been proven to
prevent child abuse and neglect
and improve maternal and child
health, parent-child interaction and
family self-sufficiency. If you
would like to support this program
in your community, you can send
your tax-deductible donation to:
Attention High School Juniors –
Youth Tour is Coming Soon!
High School juniors from schools
throughout West Florida Electric
Cooperative's (WFEC) service area in
Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson and
Washington Counties are eligible to
compete in the National Rural Electric
Association's Youth Tour. The contest
is limited each year to eleventh-grade
students whose parents or guardians
are WFEC member-owners. WFEC
treats all the candidates to a two-day
trip to Tallahassee where they will
tour the old and new state capitols,
meet government officials and observe
the legislature in session and more.
Youth Tour candidates are
nominated by their high school
counselor or principal and compete
against other students in their area for
a chance to visit our nation's capitol.
Once a candidate is chosen from
each school in the WFEC service area,
the trip to Tallahassee is taken. Upon
the candidates' return, a panel of
experts from other electric co-ops
interviews the students individually
about their knowledge of WFEC, the
rural electrification program and
energy facts, then evaluates the
students' responses, communications
skills, involvement in their
community, poise and personalities.
Following the interviews, the
participants and their guests enjoy a
banquet. Two Youth Tour participants
are then selected to visit Washington,
D.C.
The trip to Washington includes
meetings with congressional
representatives, a Potomac River
cruise and dance, visits to several
historic sites, including the U.S.
Capitol Building, Ford's Theatre,
Arlington National Cemetery, the
Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the
Holocaust Memorial Museum and
more.
The Youth Tour program's purpose
is to provide public recognition to
outstanding young people, and to
acquaint high school students with
governmental activities on a local,
state and federal level. The winners of
WFEC's Youth Tour competition may
compete against winners from other
co-ops in Florida to represent the state
on the National Youth Leadership
Board.
Each school in WFEC's service area
chooses its candidate in a different
manner, so if you are a high school
junior and interested in finding out
more about this program, please
contact your school's guidance
counselor for eligibility requirements.
We would like to sincerely thank
WFEC for all you have done for
our father, Adell Miles. The visits
made to the hospital to see Daddy,
all the food & drinks sent to the
house, the flowers, phone calls &
prayers were very much
appreciated. The dedication of the
beautiful. Daddy would have been
so honored and humbled having
the building he loved dedicated to
him. He loved WFEC, the
