The power of human connections
Vol. 60, No. 8
Warmer Weather Doesn’t Have To Dry Out Your Wallet
In the south, we patiently wait out
the colder season for warm days
we can spend outdoors, soaking up
the sun. however, that doesn’t mean
summer can’t be an uncomfortable
time of year, both on the body and
on the budget. But
there are a few easy
tips that you can
follow to make the
summer months a
bit more financially
and physically
agreeable.
Energy
conservation is a
must when taking
into account
summer usage and
rates, and it doesn’t
have to cost you
a thing. First, to
stay cool indoors
and outdoors, it’s
important to wear
lightweight, loose clothing – such as
shorts, sleeveless shirts and sandals –
and to stay hydrated. Keeping your
thermostat set to 78 while at home,
and 85 when gone for extended
periods of time, is another way to
Inside:
keep the warm weather from taking
too heavy of a toll on your savings
account. Also, remember to keep your
thermostat set to “Auto,” not “Fan.”
Keeping your refrigerator and freezer
full to their capacity (but not overly
full) is another simple way to save
energy.
Looking to save money when you
clean house? One energy efficiency
tip is to use the dishwasher instead
of washing dishes by hand. That’s
Page 3 • Board to Appoint District 6 Trustee
Page 8 • New Co-op Connections ® Program Offers Value To Members
Page 11 • Less is More
right, running a full load of dishes in
the dishwasher uses less energy than
cleaning them by hand. On laundry
day, you should wash full loads of
clothing and try to use the “cold
water” setting as much as possible.
Keep in mind that
hanging clothes out
to dry in the direct
sunlight is a good
way to avoid using
a dryer. It will also
leave your clothing
with the scent of
summer, which is
just about as good
as any dryer sheet
can do.
Other simple
and free energy
conservation tips
include:
• Use floor and
ceiling fans instead
of central air
conditioning whenever possible.
• Turn off lights as you leave a room.
• Arrange items in your fridge for easy
access and quick retrieval and removal
– that way the refrigerator door stays
open as little as possible.

• Set your refrigerator at 40 degrees
and your freezer at zero.
• Don’t use a dehumidifier when the
air conditioning unit is operating.
• Keep the blinds and shades of your
windows closed during the day and
open at night.
• If you have a pool, turn off the filter
overnight. Also, try to cut down on
the operating time of your filters and
automatic cleaning sweeps during the
day.
• Use an exhaust fan while you’re
cooking in the kitchen to pull warm
air out of the room.
• Another way to keep from wasting
energy in the kitchen is to keep the
oven door closed as much as possible
when it’s in use – alternatively, eat
cold foods (such as salad and fruit) or
foods that can be cooked or heated in
a microwave.
If you’re looking to spend a bit of
money to save money in the long-run
and be more conservative with energy,
consider purchasing ENERGY sTAR
appliances and compact fluorescent
lighting (CFL) bulbs and fixtures.
Replacing an outdated air conditioning
unit with a new ENERGY sTAR
model can save you up to 20 percent
on your utilities bill. Taking care of
your air conditioning unit is also a
necessity. It’s advised that you replace
your air filter monthly.
here are some other inexpensive to
moderately priced energy-saving fixes:
• Seal all doors and windows with
weather-strip or caulk – this will keep
warm air from getting in and cold air
from getting out.
• Invest in power strips. Not only
will this protect your televisions,
computers and other appliances, but it
will also allow you to turn them all off
with one switch.
• Consider buying a laptop instead of a
desktop the next time you’re shopping
for a new computer. Laptops expend
much less energy.
• If you plan on buying a freezer,
invest in a chest model, which is
typically 10-25 percent more energy
efficient than its upright counterpart.
summer is all about spending time
in the garden, on the deck or outdoors.
While being outside is typically more
energy efficient than hiding from
the heat indoors, there are still a few
things you can do to conserve energy
in your yard and garden. If you plan
on buying an outdoor lighting fixture
for your garden or the outside of your
house this summer, try to invest in a
low-voltage system. Already have an
outdoor lighting system? No sweat.
Just adjust your lighting timers to
switch on when needed – like when
you’re enjoying a gentle night breeze
and a good cold drink outside – and
shut off when they’re no longer being
used. Also, consider planting more
trees in your yard, specifically on the
east and west sides of your house.
shade trees alone can reduce cooling
costs by 30 percent.
There’s no reason to worry about the
heat or your wallet this summer. Just
remember to be efficient, conservative
and smart with your energy use. The
time you usually spend worrying
about bills can serve as time for a
nice, relaxing break out in the summer
sun instead. Enjoy.
Holmes County School Board Member - District 1
I currently reside in holmes County and personally have grown up within holmes County school District. I attended and graduated from Ponce de Leon high school
in 1996. Following high school, I attended the university of West Florida where I obtained continuing education courses. I was previously employed by the holmes
County Sheriff’s office and now by the Holmes County Board of County Commissioners, in the E9-1-1 Mapping and Addressing office. I have written, managed, balanced
and prepared several grants and yearly budgets while serving as the County’s 911 Coordinator.
I have been married approximately twelve years to Melissa Erickson. We have two children; Megan and Tyler. Both children are currently enrolled in the holmes
County school district. Megan will be attending Bonifay Middle school and Tyler will be attending Bonifay Elementary school in the upcoming school year.
During the past thirteen years I have been involved in the community in many different ways, such as serving on the holmes County Planning Commission as
chairman, volunteered as Fire Chief for the town of Ponce de Leon and worked with the Bonifay Police Dept. Auxiliary. I currently serve on the holmes County Local
Mitigation steering Committee, as chairman. I recently have been appointed as Fair manager to the holmes County Fair board.
Once elected to school board I pledge two actions. I want to put you and your child first by insuring the best public education possible for all children in Holmes
County schools and secondly I want to make our teachers and teaching faculty our priority. “Our Children are our pride and future, we must look out for the ones that help
them along the way.”
West Florida Electric Cooperative
(WFEC) will launch a program that
offers further proof that being a
member of an electric cooperative
has its advantages. The Co-op
Connections program, a new member
benefit program for Touchstone
Energy ® cooperatives, is designed to
deliver added value to cooperative
members.
A free offering for co-op members
and participating businesses, the
program benefits cooperative members
by offering valuable discounts at
participating local & national
businesses. At the same
time, those
businesses
benefit from
increased
customer
visits by co-op
members.
West Florida
Electric members
who sign up
will receive Coo
p C o n n e c t i o n s cards
in the mail in the coming months,
specifically during the fourth quarter
of the year. Once the member has
signed the back of the card, it may be
used at participating businesses locally
& nationwide. Co-op members can
get a flavor for which businesses are
participating in the Co-op Connections
program by logging on to the co-op’s
Web site: www.westflorida.coop.
It will be easy to pick out which
local businesses are participating.
Look for Co-op Connections stickers
in their windows. Whenever a Co-op
Connections customer — whether
from WFEC or from another
Touchstone Energy electric co-op —
shows their card at a participating
business, they receive a discount.
“The Co-op Connections card is
a valuable tool that creates an even
greater sense of membership and
reinforces West Florida Electric’s
longstanding commitment to
community,” said Gary Clark, Vice
President, Member
services. “It will
add value and
increase customer
loyalty at
participating
businesses.
simply put,
the Co-op
Connections
program is
another way
our members benefit
from being a part of their
electric cooperative,” added Clark.
Touchstone Energy is a national
alliance of local, consumer-owned
electric cooperatives providing high
standards of service to customers.
More than 650 Touchstone Energy
cooperatives in 46 states are delivering
energy to approximately 22 million
customers every day.
Less is More
Why does West Florida Electric
want the homes & businesses
in its service area to use less
power, especially during peak
time periods? When West Florida
Electric was formed over 70 years
ago, most of the larger loads in
its service territory were farms
& saw mills. As WFEC grew
& our membership evolved,
larger commercial & industrial
loads began using electricity.
cooperative. While residential
accounts are the lifeblood of our
membership, our commercial
& industrial accounts have
experienced substantial growth.
some of these businesses are
headquartered in other parts of
the state, country and world. The
homes we provide power to have
more appliances & electronics than
ever.
As residential & commercial
loads grow and energy
requirements with them; the costs
of building new
generation plants
continue to rise.
Today – more
than ever –
energy efficiency
is essential.
According to
the National Rural Electric
Cooperative Association, it costs
roughly $2,000 per kilowatt
to build generation capacity
and only $90 per kilowatt to
reduce energy demand through
demand-side management and
conservation. When you consider
those two numbers alone, it
makes better economical sense
to reduce demand and educate
members about energy efficiency
than to build additional capacity.
Energy efficiency & conservation
is the ‘hot topic’ of most energy
providers today. Whether it is
turning up the thermostat in your
home, hanging clothes on the line
instead of putting them in the
dryer, or simply changing your
air conditioning filter, every step
makes a difference. saving energy
in small ways within each home
can add up to generation savings
that affect the bottom line for
everyone. We all have to work
together.
WFEC has also introduced
programs such
as the h2O Plus
program that is
designed to lower
our members’
energy use during
critical peak
periods. To find
out more about energy efficiency,
the h2O Plus program, other
programs & services, visit our Web
site, www.westflorida.coop .
Businesses aren’t exempt from
energy efficiency, either. WFEC
offers technical assistance &
support that includes a wide range
of energy efficient options. Just
like a homeowner, a business
owner can make a few small
changes to control energy use &
raise the potential savings in the
long run.
