Worthington Announces Retirement 

Long-time member of the West 

Florida Electric Board of 

Trustees, John Worthington has 

announced his retirement. 8344801 

“I’ve really enjoyed working at the 

co-op and serving on the board. It has 

been the best time of my life,” said 

Worthington. 

Worthington, a lifelong resident of 

Washington County, was born in 1943 

to Iris (Lee) & Amos Worthington in 

the Hinson’s Crossroads community. 

He graduated from Vernon High 

School in 1963, where he played 

football. Worthington was awarded a 

football scholarship to the University 

of West Alabama, Livingston, but 

he chose not to accept the offer. 

Choosing instead, to remain in 

Hinson’s Crossroads where he has 

enjoyed a very successful career as a 

self-employed businessman. 

One of Worthington’s earliest 

career endeavors was as a lineman 

at West Florida Electric. He worked 

at the co-op from the late 1960s 

through the early 1970s. He married 

his wife of nearly 39 years, Linda, in 

1971 after meeting her at the Tasty 

Burger in Bonifay. He and Linda 

have one son, John 

N. and one grandson, 

Quincy. After their 

marriage, John & Linda 

opened a small country 

store near Hinson’s 

Crossroads. They sold 

gas & groceries such 

as canned goods, milk, 

bread and meat and were 

often the last stop for 

fishermen on their way 

to the river. After selling 

the store, Worthington 

began working as an 

independent real estate 

agent and also owned a 

mobile home sales lot. 

He continued his real 

estate career until 

recently. 4101701 

In his spare time 

Worthington enjoys 

fishing, traveling and playing cards. 

He also loves Gospel music and 

his favorite song is “Beulah Land”. 

Worthington has also served as a 

volunteer fireman on the Hinson’s 

Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department 

and has been a Mason since 1973 as a 

member of the Vernon Masonic Lodge. 

After being encouraged to run 

for a seat on the board of trustees 

by friends, Worthington was first 

elected in 1983. During his tenure, 

he has acted as chairman of the board 

for many years and also represented

Longtime friend and fellow trustee, 

Eugene Alford said, “When I think 

of John and his years of service to 

WFEC, three things come to mind: 

honesty, reliability and compassion. 

John is honest in his work ethic and 

you could always count on him to 

make the right decisions concerning 

board issues,” he continued. Alford 

believes that one of Worthington’s 

greatest qualities is his compassion for 

others. He demonstrated this caring 

nature during his many years on the 

board by always having the best 

interests of the cooperative’s members 

at the forefront of any decisions he

“It has been my pleasure to know 

John Worthington for over twenty 

years and I have truly enjoyed serving 

on the West Florida Electric Board of 

Trustees with him,” said Alford. 

WFEC President & CEO, William S. 

Rimes, recalls the first time he met 

Worthington. “During my interview 

for the job, as I looked at him, I 

thought of the song, “Big John” and 

the lyrics: ‘he stood six-foot-six and 

weighed 245, kind of broad at the 

shoulders, narrow at the hip, and 

everybody knew you didn’t give no lip 

to Big John.’ During the past thirteen 

years I have gotten to know him very 

well and have learned that John is an 

extraordinary leader…a man of total 

integrity,” he said. 

Rimes believes that Worthington is 

a man of the utmost character whose 

abilities and visionary nature helped 

facilitate a complete revolution in 

technology that took the cooperative 

from self-read meters to meter readers

Under his leadership as Chairman of 

the Board of Trustees, the cooperative 

saw remarkable improvements in 

technology, productivity, efficiency 

and most notably, accountability. 

During Worthington’s tenure on the 

board, the cooperative grew from 

10,000 members and a total utility 

plant valued at more than $40 million 

to its current 21,000 members and a 

plant value of over $100 million. 

“On the occasion of his retirement 

from the WFEC Board of Trustees, 

the board members, the management 

team and employees wish to join 

his many friends in expressing 

our heartfelt gratitude for his long 

and distinguished service to our 

cooperative. According to Mr. 

Worthington, nothing has pleased 

him more for the past 30 years than 

to watch this company grow into one 

of the strongest and most progressive 

cooperatives in the country,” said 

Rimes. “We feel he deserves much 

of the credit and should take pride 

in his many significant contributions 

to the achievements of WFEC. The 

capability of this cooperative to meet 

the needs of its expanding membership 

is directly attributed to the efforts 

of loyal and dedicated board members 

like Mr. John Worthington. We, along 

with the membership will greatly miss

Plans for a retirement celebration 

in Worthington’s honor are underway 

and will be held at a later date. While 

this celebration closes a chapter in the 

history of the cooperative, it begins a 

new chapter as the torch is passed.

Streamline Your Bill Paying Process 

Now that summer’s here who 

wants to waste time writing out 

checks to pay bills? Well now 

you don’t have to waste glorious 

days doing boring tasks like that. 

West Florida Electric Cooperative 

(WFEC) offers several ways to 

make paying your bills quicker and 

more convenient. 6203601 

You have access to your energy 

account anytime, anywhere via the 

Internet. You can view your bill or 

pay it online by using your debit 

card,Visa or MasterCard. You can 

make payments with confidence, 

knowing that your transaction is 

secure. To pay online, simply log 

on to www.westflorida.coop and 

access your account. You will 

need your account number and a 

username and password to login to 

your account. If you do not have a 

password and would like to begin 

paying your bill online, just contact 

a Member Services Representative 

in any one of our three district 

offices to get started today. You 

will be given a computer-generated 

password to use the first time you 

log in, but once you’ve logged into 

your account, you can personalize 

and edit your information. 

Automatic bank drafts or 

credit card drafts are some other 

convenient options to try. The 

amount of your electric bill can be 

drafted (automatically transferred) 

from your checking account or 

credit card on a specified day each 

month. A copy of your bill is sent 

to your home. When selecting 

this payment option, you need to 

provide WFEC with a deposit slip 

for the bank account from which 

the funds will be transferred. 

There is no service charge for 

this service. This option takes all 

the worry out of paying your bill. 

Utilizing our e-checking payment 

option is another convenient way 

to pay your bill. This option is 

available to all members who have 

a good payment history. There is 

an eight dollar service charge for 

this service. E-checks can be taken 

over the phone or online. 6083602 

If you can’t make it into the 

office, WFEC also offers remote 

payment locations throughout our 

service area. Payments made on or 

before your bill’s due date can be 

made at Regions Bank in Chipley, 

Blountstown or Marianna; Superior 

Bank in Altha, Blountstown or 

Marianna; or People’s South Bank 

in Marianna, Greenwood, Malone, 

Chipley, Bonifay or Sneads. 

Night drop depositories are also 

available at each of WFEC’s 

district offices for members who 

can’t make it by the offices during 

normal business hours. WFEC 

accepts all major credit cards.

Handling Equipment or PORCHE 

system. West Florida Electric 

Cooperative (WFEC) has recently 

updated its automated outage 

response system for our members’ 

benefit. Before these updates, the 

PORCHE system was easy to use, 

guiding you through an outage 

reporting process that allowed 

information to be entered using a 

touch-tone phone or by speaking 

answers to the system prompts. 

If circumstances permitted, a live 

operator could also be accessed by 

staying on the line. 2654101 

It is our hope that recent updates 

make the system even easier to 

use. However, please remember 

to allow sufficient time for repairs 

to occur before calling WFEC to 

report your outage again, especially 

during major weather events like a 

hurricane. WFEC’s linemen work 

hard to restore electric service to 

members as quickly as possible, but 

some repairs may take a lot of time. 

With the upgraded system, when a 

member calls to report an outage, 

they will have the option to enter 

not only their telephone number, 

but also their account number or 

meter number. This will provide our 

dispatchers with the most accurate 

and up-to-date information available.

the mass exodus from land lines to 

the exclusive use of cell phones,”

to pinpoint an outage location 

has become a problem since our 

members are migrating to the use of 

cell phones alone. The co-op may 

not have a members’ correct phone 

number on file if their phone number 

has not been updated recently on our

The new information that may be 

entered into the PORCHE system is 

located on the top of your monthly 

billing statement. It might be a good 

idea to keep a bill on the refrigerator 

or in a drawer near the phone so the 

information you need to report an 

outage with is handy when you need 

it. The meter number is the 8-digit 

number located on your meter. 

Please check the phone number 

located on the top of your bill to 

see if it is correct. If this number 

is not accurate, please update this 

information with the cooperative.

number of your home are also listed 

on the top portion of your monthly

PORCHE system will no longer 

be the same when reporting an 

outage, so it is very important to pay 

attention and listen to the prompts so 

the correct information is provided 

to the dispatcher. It is our hope that 

these upgrades will not only improve 

our outage response times, but also

easier for our members. 

WFEC asks that our members be 

patient with us during this transition.

Every summer West Florida 

Electric Cooperative (WFEC) 

sponsors two students on the National 

Rural Electric Cooperative Youth 

Tour. The Electric Cooperative Youth 

Tour has been a joint effort of local 

electric co-ops, such as WFEC, their 

statewide co-op associations, and the 

National Rural Electric Cooperative 

Association (NRECA), for over 40 

years. 

Since 1964, the nation’s 

cooperative electric utilities have 

sponsored more than 40,000 high 

school juniors and seniors for visits to 

their U.S. congressional delegations, 

energy and grassroots government 

education sessions, and sightseeing 

in Washington. The National Rural 

Electric Cooperative Youth Tour is 

open to all high school juniors whose 

parents or guardians are members 

of West Florida Electric. Each high 

school within WFEC’s service area 

chooses a representative for the State 

and National Youth Tours each year. 

This year’s winners were Brett 

Tanner of Blountstown and Angel 

(Annie) Rodriguez of Bonifay who 

were among the nearly 1,500 high 

school students from across the 

country participating in the National 

Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour 

held June 12-17, 2010, in Washington, 

D.C. 8530304 

Brett Tanner is a senior this year at 

Blountstown High School and is 

the son of Warren & Kim Tanner. 

He is currently working on getting 

his pilot’s license. The trip to 

Washington, D.C. included a very 

special experience for him – a visit 

to the National Law Enforcement 

Officers Memorial. The National 

Law Enforcement Officers Memorial 

is the nation’s monument to law 

enforcement officers who have died 

in the line of duty. Dedicated on 

October 15, 1991, the Memorial 

honors federal, state and local law 

enforcement officers who have made

this summer. 

the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and 

protection of our nation and its people. 

The Memorial features two 

curving, 304-foot-long blue-gray 

marble walls. Carved on these walls 

are the names of nearly 19,000 

officers who have been killed in the 

line of duty throughout U.S. history, 

dating back to the first known death in 

1792. Unlike many other memorials 

in Washington, DC, the National Law 

Enforcement Officers Memorial is 

ever-changing: new names of fallen 

officers are added to the monument 

each spring, in conjunction with 

National Police Week. 

This was a special experience for 

Tanner because his aunt, Officer Robin 

Tanner, was killed in the line of duty 

on December 13, 2007 at the age of 

47. An officer at the Monroe County 

Sheriff’s department, Officer Tanner 

was responding to an emergency call 

when her patrol car was struck by 

another driver who did not yield the 

right of way, causing her car to crash 

into a concrete building. While at 

the memorial, Brett was able to find 

Robin’s name and take rubbings and 

photos for his family. His dad, Warren, 

is also a law enforcement officer in 

Blountstown. 

“I really had a great time on the 

trip and have made many memories 

that I will remember forever. The 

Youth Tour was definitely a oncein-a-lifetime 

experience; it was so

person some of our 

country’s history 

that I had only 

seen in textbooks 

before going to

in because of a series of knee injuries 

she’s experienced. In her spare time 

she enjoys riding horses, swimming 

and riding four wheelers. 

While in Washington, D.C. she 

especially enjoyed visiting all the 

monuments, memorials and Arlington
