I havenever taken her to the track, but I do like carving the mountain backroads. With the age and mileage of my car, what should I be looking at to replace in the suspension to keep her in top shape? Everything now in the suspension is stock original, but no current problems with the ride. Second question is: what would be the “one” suspension upgrade that is the best bang for the buck, that you really don’t need, but you gotta have? -Brad Winesett For most E36 cars (92-99 3 Series), you can expect 70k to be a pretty good end of life for the rear shock mounts and therear trailing arm bushings. There are various replacement parts for both of those failure locations and I do prefer something better than the stock design for both locations. Also, while they may not be trash quite yet,the front control arm bushings in non-M cars are webbed rubber with big air voids and I prefer either the M3 piece or a urethane replacement in that location also. If I was picking one upgrade, it really would depend on my budget and what the goal was (lowering the car, more responsive, what ride quality, etc). The suspension is a system and all the parts work together, so picking one piece may not be my preferred approach. If I was doing it that way, I would likely go for a set of Bilstein struts and shocks though. They last well and will give you improved responsiveness and grip. For me, the shocks and struts are the heart of a proper suspension system and while the other parts should be chosen to work with them, dampers will make the most difference on the feel and performance of any BMW. And keep in mind, one piece of a system will not likely transform the car into something amazing, but one wrong piece can defi nitely make the car irritating to drive and destroy your ride quality. Work with the shop or vendor you trust to make a good decision.
