Chapter 4 Design and implementation To design a system well requires knowledge of all components and appropriate use of the tools at disposal. After all, design is not just what someth<strong>in</strong>g looks like, it is how it works. Many design decisions made throughout the project were <strong>based</strong> on best practises and examples from Houd<strong>in</strong>i and its HDK. The ma<strong>in</strong> goal was to <strong>in</strong>tegrate FRep <strong>modell<strong>in</strong>g</strong> capabilities <strong>in</strong>to a environment familiar to exist<strong>in</strong>g Houd<strong>in</strong>i users rather than <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g complicated new workflows. 4.1 System overview General nam<strong>in</strong>g conventions and cod<strong>in</strong>g standards have been respected and kept consistent with the Maya plug<strong>in</strong> and FRep library itself, wherever possible and not conflict<strong>in</strong>g with HDK’s cod<strong>in</strong>g guidel<strong>in</strong>es. There are three ma<strong>in</strong> QtCreator projects: • QtRep: The port of the FRep API from W<strong>in</strong>dows to Mac OS X (see Section 4.3.1 on GCC compatibility). The output is a dynamic library libQtRep.dylib on Mac OS. On W<strong>in</strong>dows, this would correspond to a .dll, on L<strong>in</strong>ux to a .so file. • frep-houd<strong>in</strong>i: The <strong>in</strong>termediate layer (see Section 3.1.1), mak<strong>in</strong>g use of libQtRep. dylib and conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g all custom FRep nodes for Houd<strong>in</strong>i. • houd<strong>in</strong>i-test: A standalone test project that uses libQtRep.dylib and allows to make calls to the FRep API. This is useful for test<strong>in</strong>g and debugg<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>teraction with the FRep library. 14
