On The Coast<br />

There are many ways to enjoy the breathtaking<br />

coast of <strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong>.<br />

• Take a walk along one of the many coastal<br />

routes exploring the stunning views of the<br />

coastline, countryside, and towns and villages<br />

OR<br />

• For a day out, discover the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong><br />

coastal path with its 16 miles of unspoilt<br />

coastline that runs from its eastern boundary<br />

at Holywood, through Bangor to Portavoe,<br />

just south of Groomsport.<br />

For something a little bit more adventurous:<br />

• Take to the high seas on one of our boat trips<br />

or experience Shore fishing along the coast<br />

• Fishing trips depart from the Eisenhower Pier<br />

twice daily in July and August at 18.30 &<br />

19.30 and weekends in Autumn.<br />

• Whilst Extreme thrill seekers can try their<br />

hands at kite surfing and catching waves.<br />

Take the time to explore the rich vein of<br />

Christian heritage running through the<br />

landscape of <strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong>, Bangor and<br />

Groomsport, left when the monks came to<br />

Bangor in the 15th century, these include:<br />

• Bangor Abbey, First Bangor Presbyterian<br />

Church, St Columbanus Church of <strong>Ireland</strong> and<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong> Museum.<br />

• Take a more contemporary look at recent<br />

history, at the Ulster Folk and Transport<br />

Museum and experience the birth of<br />

modern transport in all its glory, from horse<br />

drawn carriages, electric trams, motorbikes<br />

to fire-engines and vintage cars at the<br />

transport museum.<br />

Family Fun Days<br />

• Pickie Funpark in Bangor, always a popular<br />

attraction has recently been updated for<br />

the 21st century without losing any of<br />

its characteristic charm. It’s the ideal place<br />

to start a fun day out for the family with its<br />

adventure playground, giant pedal boat<br />

swans, Pickie Puffer steam train and café.<br />

• Take a walk through Castle Park and Bangor<br />

Castle Walled Garden (open seasonally) then<br />

stop off at the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong> Museum where<br />

the 200 year history of Bangor as a seaside<br />

destination is full of fun and fascination.<br />

• Bangor’s Town Centre is an excellent place<br />

to stop for lunch in the many family-friendly<br />

restaurants, cafes and bistros, or alternatively,<br />

enjoy a picnic in nearby Ward Park<br />

• Go for a leisurely walk along the promenade<br />

or catch a family flick at the Bangor<br />

Omniplex to end the perfect day.<br />

Wet Days<br />

On those days the sun fails to shine in the<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong> area, there are plenty of indoor<br />

activities to entertain the whole family;<br />

• Put your feet up and relax as the kids enjoy<br />

the fun in one of <strong>North</strong> <strong>Down</strong>’s indoor soft<br />

play areas. Burn off that excess energy in<br />

Bangor’s indoor go-karting arena or visit the<br />

brand new Bangor Aurora Aquatic & Leisure<br />

Complex.<br />

• <strong>Discover</strong> the history of the area at the <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Down</strong> Museum where you will learn about<br />

Vikings, Christian Heritage and Bangor’s early<br />

days as a seaside resort!
