Mäori must accept responsibility
for responding to Mäori youth
suicide.
By Mäori for Mäori responses
which are community based but
emphasise individual youth.
Mäori communities have the
skills to respond but need to be
resourced properly and left to get
on with the job.
Self-determination in responding
to Mäori issues.
Whänau are the basic unit of
Mäori society and efforts to
reduce Mäori youth suicide need
to include whänau develpment.
This is particularly relevant for
urbanised Mäori youth who may
be estranged from their culture,
hapü and iwi.
Whänau can be related by
whakapapa or surrogate whänau.
Cultural development means
teaching Mäori youth about their
identity as Mäori, who they are,
where they come from and how
their whakapapa as Mäori is a
strength. Cultural development
contains within it the prescription
for inter-personal relationships,
codes of conduct and reciprocal
roles and responsibilites.
Implications
Mäori youth suicide prevention
strategies, programmes and
services must be driven by Mäori
for Mäori, and according to Mäori
priorities, processes and
capacities.
Mäori youth suicide prevention
strategies need to emphasise the
development of whänau and
the strengthening of whänau
capacities to nuture and protect
Mäori youth as the fundamental
part of Mäori social organisation.
Cultural development is about
restoring traditional values and
practices which guide how Mäori
interact with each other and
applying them in a contemporary
context, and locating Mäori
expertise to impart cultural
training and re-training.
