Eagles back on track with win
The Decatur Eagles hoped
o avoid a repeat of last week
hen they fell behind by 21
oints in the first half on
heir way to a loss at Gainesville.
And though it looked like
history might repeat itself
early, the Eagles made sure
there would be no big deficit
this week as they beat
the Wichita Falls Hirschi
Huskies 38-19 in front of an
Eagle Stadium crowd.
The Huskies struck for an
early score when Queyson
Sanders scored on a 15-yard
run up the middle to cap a 3-
play, 30-yard drive with 9:52
left in the first quarter.
Decatur responded by scoring
the next 21 points. Quarterback
Tyler Hodges threw
the first of his three passing
touchdowns when he connected
with Brandon Climer
for a 6-yard score with 6:27
left to play in the first quarter.
The score capped a 9-
play, 80-yard drive.
With 2:02 left in the first
quarter, the Eagles broke
the tie when Alec Torres
hauled in a 38-yard pass
from Hodges.
Midway through the second
quarter, Decatur would
extend its lead when Hodges
scampered into the end
zone from 2 yards. Kicker
Tyler Spence, who was 4-4
on point-after kicks on the
night, gave Decatur a 21-7
lead.
The Huskies slowed Decatur’s
momentum when they
drove 67 yards for a score
with 2:53 left in the half.
Quarterback Dominique
Bobo connected with Tae
Jemison, and the Huskies
had pulled within 21-13 after
a failed extra point attempt.
Decatur regained its
two-touchdown lead when
Hayden Carpenter scored on
a 17-yard run up the middle
with 8:30 left in the third
quarter.
The pesky Huskies responded
once again with a
big run by Sanders with 8:13
left in the third. The 56-yard
run cut the lead to 28-19.
Hodges gave the Eagles
some more breathing room
when he found Wesley Coleman
on a 27-yard pass play.
Later in the quarter, Hodges
would leave the game
when he injured his right
shoulder on a running play.
He went to the hospital after
the game for x-rays.
Spence capped the scoring
for Decatur with a 22-yard
field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles used a balanced
offensive attack with
267 yards in the air and 214
yards on the ground. Before
having to leave the game,
Hodges had another strong
outing, completing 12 of 17
passes for 214 yards while
also racking up 187 yards on
23 carries. Torres caught two
passes for 67 yards.
The win improved Decatur’s
record to 2-1 going into
Friday’s game at Carrollton
Ranchview.
Boyd and Henrietta have staged
ome classic battles over the years.
This year’s non-district matchup Friay
in Boyd was not one of them.
The Yellowjackets sprinted to a 34-0
alftime lead on their way to their first
in of the 2010 season.
Boyd tapped the brakes in the secnd
half, leaving the final at 34-0.
The ‘Jackets needed a little more
han two minutes to get all the points
ecessary.
Jared Cate threw the first of his
hree touchdown passes, hitting Camron
Bowyers from 18 yards. Bowyers
icked the extra point for a 7 point
ead.
The two hooked up again late in the
rst period from 25 yards out to stretch
he lead to 13-0, after the PAT failed.
Colton Lyon added a TD run from six
ards in the second period, but again
he kick was no good, making it 19-0.
Boyd needed a little more than a
inute to score again, following a Lyon
nterception and return to the Henritta
two-yard line. Cate ran it in on the
ext play, then found Junior Whatley
n the extra point play for a 27-0 lead
ith 8:09 left in the half.
The final score came with 2:46 left
n the second quarter, a 35-yard heave
tacked on the final point.
Cate was 12-19 on the night for 166
ards, part of a 298-yard offensive efort
SPRINGTOWN 21
Bulls spoil
homecoming
By BRANDON EVANS
Although a surprise rain storm dampened senior
quarterback Cody Henson’s numbers, the Bulls still
managed to drown Springtown 34-21.
The Bulls dealt the Porcupines their first loss of the
season and dulled Springtown’s homecoming ceremonies.
“We were misfiring a bunch,” said Bridgeport head
coach Danny Henson. “We misfired on some snaps and
on some routes, and some passes were off the mark.”
Despite several fumbles and slippery passes, Henson
still managed to throw for 287 yards and three
touchdowns. For the second week in a row, junior running
back Trent Schuett was Henson’s go-to receiver.
Schuett accounted for 103 receiving yards and three
touchdowns, including one 46-yard scamper down the
sideline on a short grab.
“Trent did a good job of making a bunch of yards
after the catch,” Henson said.
Sophomore running back Gabe Huerta also showed
his running ability, rushing for two touchdowns inside
the red zone.
“I’m happy about the win,” Henson said. “I thought
we didn’t handle the ball well at times, and we did
play well at times ... I came into Springtown knowing
they had a good secondary.”
Springtown is a 4A school. They entered Friday
night’s contest undefeated.
Henson said the challenging game helps prepare
his Bulls for next week’s showdown with Prosper.
Last year, in an away game, the Eagles blanked the
Bulls 24-0.
