Panthers paw Eagles
Paradise didn’t toy with the Rio Vista
Eagles Friday.
Senior signal caller Toi Glover ran for
120 yards and three scores and passed
for 74 yards and a two-point conversion
to pace Paradise to a 27-9 win and a 3-0
start to the 2010 seaosn.
The visiting Panthers wasted no time
taking the lead.
Glover’s 31-yard run put the Panthers
up 6-0 with just 59 seconds gone in the
game.
Dylan Hightower added to the lead
late in the first quarter on a 1-yard run,
then gathered in Glover’s pass for the
two-point play and a 14-0 edge.
Rio Vista rallied in the second period,
converting a safety to get on the board,
then scoring at the 7:01 mark to pull
within 14-9.
The teams played scoreless ball for
almost a quarter and a half, until the
Panthers benefitted from Glover’s second
touchdown, this one from 26 yards.
The extra point again went awry, but the
Panthers held a 20-9 edge with 1:41 left
in the third.
Paradise iced it on another scoring

jaunt from Glover, a 13-yard effort with
3:34 to go. This time Jarrett Roper converted
the extra point for the final margin.
The Panther running attack led the
way with 240 yards, of 314 gained on the
night. Rio Vista managed 250 yards on
39 runs and 20 pass attempts but had to
punt five times and suffered 10 penalties.
The hosts also won the turnover battle,
giving up one fumble, while the Panthers
had a pass interception and a fumble.
Paradise travels to Alvord for its next
test.

’Dogs bite Tigers
The Alvord Bulldogs received
a strong performance
from running back Colton
Redman and some strong
second-half defense to turn
back the Electra Tigers 27-21
Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Trailing 13-7 at the half,
Alvord scored the next 20
points on three Redman
touchdowns to give the Bulldogs
just enough offense to
hang on for the win.
The Tigers built their first
half lead on touchdown runs
by quarterback Tyler Coats
and running back Joe Rey Quinonez.
Redman provided Alvord’s
only first half touchdown
ith a 5-yard run with 5:47 left
n the first quarter. Jose Luna
dded the extra point.
With 6:50 left in the third
quarter, Redman scored his
second touchdown of the
game on a 2-yard run. The
scoring drive was set up by a
41-yard run by Redman two
plays earlier. The point-after
try failed.
Later in the quarter, Redman
ran for a 12-yard score,
but the kick failed again.
With 11:34 left in the fourth
quarter, Redman broke free
on a 55-yard scoring run. His
two point conversion run put
the Bulldogs in front 27-13.
The Tigers closed to within
a touchdown when Coats
scored on an 8-yard run and
Quinonez ran in the twopoint
conversion with 9:15
left in the game.
The Tigers once again
threatened to score late in
the game, but the Bulldog defense
held strong to preserve
the win.
Alvord Coach Don Deweber
said that while he was
proud of his team’s running
game and defense, he was
concerned about penalties
and mistakes. The Bulldogs
fumbled three times, losing
one, and were called for 11
penalties totaling 93 yards.
Redman finished with 310
of Alvord’s 420 rushing yards
in the game.
Alvord, 2-1, will host Paradise
Friday.

Chico rallied from a 21-0 deficit but
couldn’t keep up with the Gorman
Panthers Friday in a 34-18 loss.
The 0-3 Dragons got within 21-12
midway through the third quarter,
only to see the visitors reel off two
more scores, with the final TD at
three minutes to go putting the contest
out of reach.
Hunter York helped account for all
three Chico scores, including a pair of
short runs to go with his 12-33 passing
night for 172 yards and a score.
Gorman got this one started early,
with a 45-yard scoring run only 2:13
into the game.
Brandon Velasquez added his second
touchdown early in the second
period to stretch the lead to 14-0.
B.J. Ramirez, who paced the Panthers
with 118 yards, scored from a
yard out to put the Dragons in a 21-
point hole.

Chico burned by Gorman

A blocked point after attempt
and a pair of untimely
penalties in the first half
proved to be momentum
swinging moments during
Friday’s homecoming game
between Northwest and
Midlothian as the Texans
were never able to recover in
an 18-6 loss.
Northwest posted just 155
yards of total offense after 80
yards worth of penalties were
subtracted. The team was
held to 94 yards in the second
half as Midlothian posted
three sacks and a combined
five plays for negative yardage.
“We were inept on offense.
It was horrible. Just horrible,”
Northwest coach Bill
Patterson said. “If you’re not
going to do any better than
six points, we’re not going
to win another game. It was
bad, bad, bad.”
After a field goal miss by
Midlothian in the second
quarter, Northwest (1-2) appeared
to be on the verge of
tying the game at 7-7 as a
three-yard touchdown run by
Michael Green got the Texans
on the board. The ensuing
point after attempt was the
first of two critical moments
in the game as Midlothian
defensive back Eric Agbaroji
came off the end to block
the kick which bounced into
the arms of teammate Gage
Windsor who raced the opposite
direct for two-point
safety to make it a 9-6 Panther
lead.
Midlothian (2-1) appeared
content to run out the clock
at the end of the first half
with a 15-6 lead when an offsides
penalty against Northwest
kept the drive alive on
fourth down and one with 9
seconds left, moving the ball
into Northwest territory. The
next snap saw a personal foul
penalty charged against the
Texans with 1 second left and
while officials were trying to
make the call, a Northwest
player’s argument cost the
team another 15 yards.
That set up a Dillon Wilson
35-yard field goal attempt
which was made only after a
timeout by the defense saw
the senior kicker miss the
first try.
The second half saw Northwest
post three drives with
the third quarter, his one-yard effort
made it 21-12.
But Gorman responded with an
8-yard pass from Drew Flannery to
Velasquez to lead 28-12.
The back breaker came on a 2-yard
run by James Thomas with just three
minutes to play for a 34-12 lead.
Chico answered with 1:15 to play
on a 12-yard pass from York to Justin
Clayton.
Tyler Bingham was York’s leading
target with four receptions, good for
61 yards.
The Chico ground game was less effective,
accounting for just 41 yards,
Victor Velasquez got 35 of those on
13 rushes.
Gorman had one fumble and one
interception, but Chico coughed it up
three times, losing two-of-four fumbles
and one pick-off.
It was also a penalty heavy game,
with Gorman stepped off for 86 yards
on 12 flags and Chico 93 on 11.
The Dragons’ next test comes Friday
at Santo.
Northwest falls to Midlothian
at least seven plays but no
points. The Texans were
stopped short on fourth down
twice and forced to punt after
facing a third down and 37 on
their final possession of the
game.
Midlothian opened with a
7-0 lead in the first on a Bryan
DuPont seven-yard touchdown
reception. Three drives
later, Northwest had the
would-be game-tying points
within reach before the kick
block produced that 9-6 lead.
Panther running back Justin
Seeton scored on a nine-yard
run the following drive to put
the home team up 15-6 followed
by Wilson’s field goal
that capped the scoring for
both teams.
