We meet Wednesday even<strong>in</strong>gs for meditation.<br />
We have a Day of M<strong>in</strong>dfulness the second<br />
weekend of the month, and Dharma discussions<br />
the second Monday even<strong>in</strong>g. We also have<br />
local weekly and biweekly sutra study nights,<br />
biweekly meditation for Young Lotus Buds,<br />
and a monthly precept recitation near the time<br />
of the <strong>full</strong> moon. Our journal, Lotus Leaves, is<br />
published quarterly. In October, we had a<br />
weekend retreat with new friends. M<strong>in</strong>dfulness<br />
practice is still a miracle to many people. Our<br />
Sangha thoroughly enjoys the work of<br />
transcrib<strong>in</strong>g and edit<strong>in</strong>g Thiiy' s Dharma talks.<br />
Togetherness makes the path much easier. In<br />
January, Arnie Kotler and <strong>The</strong>rese Fitzgerald<br />
led a Day of M<strong>in</strong>dfulness, two public talks,<br />
and a weekend retreat.<br />

To attract more members, we've written articles<br />
on the summer retreat for several magaz<strong>in</strong>es<br />
and newsletters. We have a small library<br />
of books, tapes, and videos to provide teach<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
and <strong>in</strong>spiration for Dharma discussions.<br />
As we write this, it is spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Perth. <strong>The</strong> birds<br />
are s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g (or screech<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the case of the<br />
parrots) and myriad wildflowers are com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>to bloom <strong>in</strong> the bush. Please let us share them<br />
with you as most of you move towards w<strong>in</strong>ter,<br />
and please share with us the joys and difficulties<br />
of start<strong>in</strong>g a Sangha.<br />

We have a Day of M<strong>in</strong>dfulness every other<br />
month, usually on Sunday. In Kyoto, meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
are led by Keiko Okuyama, student of Sh<strong>in</strong><br />
Watanabe; and <strong>in</strong> Nagoya, by Ann Ellis,<br />
participant <strong>in</strong> Isehara retreat.<br />
This has been the year of the Rat. In J apanese<br />
mythology, rats and mice are very helpfu<br />
l to humans - tunnel<strong>in</strong>g and retriev<strong>in</strong>g lost<br />
items, transmitt<strong>in</strong>g important messages, and<br />
signify<strong>in</strong>g gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> plenty. Twelve of us , many<br />
of whom helped with Thiiy and the Sangha' s<br />
visit to Japan, have been meet<strong>in</strong>g monthly<br />
through the mail. We are becom<strong>in</strong>g friends<br />
through shar<strong>in</strong>g our thoughts and feel<strong>in</strong>gs about<br />
the teach<strong>in</strong>gs. We have exchanged wonderful<br />
letters as well as sunflower seeds (homegrown<br />
by Kei suke!), lavender, Buddha photos, organic<br />
green tea, and videotapes.<br />
