Waiting to
Exhale!
I
n the anticipation of the arrival of HERLIFE
Magazine, I think I forgot to breathe, let
alone exhale! Well, the magazine has finally
arrived, and now am waiting in anticipation to
hear what the women of South Florida think about
HERLIFE Magazine. So what are you waiting for?
Drop me a line and tell me! As I wait to exhale,
I think of women who go about their busy lives,
always on the go, being mom, employee, partner;
caring for the needs of everyone else, but
neglecting time for herself. So, I ask each of you in
your busy lives, do you remember to breathe and
more importantly exhale?
I know that we all have to balance and juggle
our daily activities. I know I do! I am a mother
of three active children. Khristopher is 16 and a
sophomore at SunCoast High School. Kellen, my
ten-year-old son, is in 4th grade, and Kelsey, my nine-year-old daughter is in 3rd grade. They both attend Discovery Key Elementary
School and are full-time models! I am also the wife of Shawn. How could I forget that! Did I mention in my spare time I am
the Team Developmental Chairperson for the Relay for Life of Wellington? Yes, we need your help! Come out and volunteer! As a
cancer survivor, I know how important it is to give back.
Breathe and Exhale! I am having so much fun right now with the launching of HERLIFE Magazine. I have met some
wonderful women who have and will honor us by being our cover girls. They are all so inspirational and I am sure that their
stories will touch your lives and spirits. I am also thankful for our photographers, who are out in the community, capturing the
events that matter the most to you. As you are reading the magazine, take a minute, breathe…and then exhale.
Remember, even if you are a working mother, a stay-at-home mother or a single woman, if you do not take care of yourself,
you won’t be here to take care of those you love. So as I write this, and think about how I want HERLIFE Magazine to inspire you, I
remind myself the importance of taking some “me” time. And why not? I deserve it! So, breathe…and exhale.
Simplify Your
Beauty Routine
By Rachel C. Murphy
A
favorite moment in your
day could be waking up to
a sunlight filled room and
bask in the opportunity that lies ahead.
A cup of coffee, maybe a croissant and
you’re ready to face all of the important
tasks at hand.
Right. Most of us are thrilled about
the coffee, but wake up in a state of panic
at the long laundry list of things that
must be accomplished. Between work,
kids and marriage, making yourself feel
beautiful can come in low on your list of
to do’s.
So why not streamline the process?
According to makeup artist Karin Barragato,
there are lots of tips and tricks to
help make your makeup routine a breeze
instead of a burden.
One of the easiest, most overlooked
ways to simplify your beauty routine is
from the inside out. “Drink water and
eat healthfully,” says Barragato. While
this may seem like common nutritional
advice, this is key to saving time in the
morning.
Barragato says that if the skin is
properly maintained, it takes less time to
try and rejuvenate skin. Part of maintenance
is proper hydration and finding the
right products for your skin, whether it is
dry, combination, oily or sensitive. With
regular treatment, your skin’s glow can
be a great base to work from.
One of the most common things that
many people forget or get too lazy to do
is wash their face. “You’d be amazed by how many people don’t take their makeup off
before they go to bed and that’s one of the most important things to do,” says Barragato.
Starting with a clean foundation in the morning saves time trying to erase the
damage from the night before.
When it comes to makeup, Barragato says to start thinking of your favorite
products in new ways. “By mixing in a little foundation into your favorite moisturizer,
you get the same fast results as a product that’s made to save a step, but you know you
like the texture and consistency of it,” says Barragato. Many of the tinted moisturizers
on the market tend to be heavy or oily, but by mixing your own, you ensure that you’ll
be happy with the results.
Other double duty products can include an eye shadow that doubles as eyeliner
when used wet, or blush that adds a flattering lift to eyelids. “Just because you have a
powder palate that you call blush, doesn’t mean that you can’t put it on your eyelids,”
says Barragato. She says that the mineral powders that have gained in popularity
recently are particularly great for this purpose.
One of the simplest
and most overlooked
ways to streamline
your beauty routine is
from the inside out.
Another cheek color trick is using a gel or stain on lips.
The rosy glow of the tint will give a natural flush to lips.
Conversely, creamy lip color can be applied to the cheeks with a
dampened cosmetic sponge. Care should be taken with shades
to avoid too bright color all over the face.
Clear mascara is a lifesaver for a finished look without
looking overly made up. It works to set the lashes and keep
powders from eye shadow from falling into lashes. The same
trick works with eyebrows, making sure your eye-opening arch
stays put all day. A little hairspray on an eyebrow brush will
also do the trick, says Barragato.
Some of the old standbys are still in place, she says. For
puffy, sleepless night eyes, a dab of Preparation H will help
reduce swelling and help fake a few hours of sleep. This trick
is widely used in the modeling industry. A quick line of white
eyeliner along the inner lash line will also brighten eyes. The
white reflects against the whites of the eyes making them seem
brighter.
Barragato says that a lot of products that claim to be
double duty are simply the same colors in different packaging.
“If you’re savvy and realize that they are marketing the whole
kit and caboodle, you can save yourself a little money in the
process,” she says.
Your morning ritual doesn’t have to be stressful. All it takes
is a couple of glasses of water and some smart uses of color and
pretty soon, your face will be polished and professional, with a
couple of minutes to spare for some extra shut-eye. Two goals
accomplished!
Making of a Chef
Bernstein
I
f you would have asked Michelle
Bernstein when she was a young
girl, what she was going to be
when she grew up, professional chef
most certainly wouldn’t have been a
career on her mind.
From the age of three, Michelle
loved to dance. She would dance in the
lobby as her sister participated in dance
class. She would dance at home. And
finally, when a Russian ballet teacher
took notice of Michelle’s love for dance,
she was welcomed into an official dance
class herself. “Dance meant the world to
me,” shared Michelle. “Throughout my
formative years, I devoted everything I
had to dance.”
Michelle was a talented dancer, performing
with the renowned Alvin Ailey
Dance Company in New York, but she
always lacked in one area important to
dancers. “I was never thin enough,” says
Michelle. “My mother was such a great
cook and I loved to eat what she made. I
would be disciplined enough all day, but
you know what? My dance teacher didn’t
come home with me at night and I had a
really difficult time following the rules of
not eating. I was always the last person in
our family sitting at the dinner table and I
would finish off what ever was left.”
It was in college that Michelle
started to focus on a potential career
in the culinary world. “I was home on break for college, and
feeling like nothing had really taken a hold of me yet. I hadn’t
felt that passion that I had felt when I was dancing. It wasn’t
until my mom and I were cooking in her kitchen that an idea
sparked. She turned to me and said, ‘You should think about
going to culinary school…maybe you could be on TV and teach
people about healthy eating and how to cook?’”
That was in 1992, and female chefs were few and far
between. Still, Michelle thought about what her mom said and
decided to do some exploring. “There happened to be a new
culinary arts school opening up less than a mile away from
where my parents lived. Mom and I decided to stop by and
see what it was all about. When I walked in and began to look
around, I got these butterflies in my stomach. I still wasn’t sure
what it was all about, but I knew I was in love. I enrolled and
took a leap into this new world.”
It wasn’t an easy journey for Michelle. She was a tiny,
petite girl trying to fit into what was then a very male dominated
world. “The guys in school would make fun of me and tell
me I would never be a chef. The environment was tough and it
was a constant struggle…I was a fragile, petite former dancer,
which definitely did not fit in to this testosterone driven field.”
Michelle began working outside of the culinary school
at Mark Millitello’s, Mark’s Place Restaurant in North Miami.
Starting out at the pizza and salad station, Michelle spent a lot
of time observing and watching the other guys. She learned
a lot and after 1 ½ years, she had advanced her way up to the
back line. It was then that she was confronted head on with a
chef who would inadvertently help shape her into who she is
today. “There was one chef in particular, Doug Reese, who was
especially hard on me. He’d walk past me and shove me against
the wall, and was constantly rough with me. He did everything
he could to make my life miserable. One day, he pulled me
aside and said, ‘If you want to be in this business, you’ve got to
gain some weight and get some muscles on you. You can’t be
asking people to carry stuff for you all the time and you need to
toughen up.’”
“Doug was right and was a major influence in my life. I
began weight training and became strong enough physically
to hold my own on the line. The path to becoming a chef was
physically and mentally hard. There has been a lot of misery,
frustration, hospital visits, burns, cuts and more…it isn’t an
easy profession and is definitely not as glamorous as one would
suspect. It requires a certain amount of testosterone and inner
fire to succeed.”
It was several years later that Michelle met her husband,
David Martinez. “We met when I was a chef at the Mandarin
Oriental. I had low self-esteem and even though I was doing
well as a chef, I still lacked a certain amount of confidence. It
was David who gave me the courage and inspired me to stand
alone…to break out from under the names I was working for
and to make a name for myself.”
Michelle has proven that she has what it takes to succeed
in the industry. Her husband, David, has taken a supportive
back seat, helping Michelle to open three successful restaurants
(Michelle Bernstein’s at the Omphoy, Michy’s and Sra. Marti-
12 HERLIFEmagazine.com

nez) as well as to earn the prestigious
James Beard award in 2008. Michelle still
marvels as to how she has come to be
where she is today. “I am so thankful, but
oftentimes, I still have the feeling that I
am not worthy of such amazing honors. I
always felt like an award like the James
“I always felt like
an award like
the James Beard
award was too far
out of my reach.
I'm humbled and
it truly makes me
want to work even
harder to share
my love of food
with others.”
Beard award was too far out of my reach.
I’m humbled and it truly makes me want
to work even harder to share my love of
food with others.”
Michelle is definitely doing what
she can to share her passion for food
with others, especially young children.
Through an organization called “Common
Threads” (www.commonthreads.
org), Michelle is teaching Miami’s
children who are 8 to 11 year the importance
of nutrition, culture in food and
the socialization of eating together. “The
children involved in Common Threads
are learning valuable life skills as well as
essential kitchen skills. They are using
chef knives and chopping their own food
as well as learning about the importance
of sitting with others and sharing a meal.
Common Threads is huge in Chicago
and we are hoping we can find the same
kind of large sponsorship backing here in
Miami to keep it thriving,” says Michelle.
Michelle is also involved in Michelle
Obama’s initiative to make school
lunches healthy and affordable. “Working
with the Miami Dade public school
lunch program has been innovating and
challenging. We are getting the kids
excited about fresh, healthy school lunches! We’re teaching the cafeteria workers
how to make pizza from scratch. We are taking French fries off the menu and instead
are offering whole roasted sweet potatoes. The challenge comes with trying to create
menus for $1.20, but with the help of local farmers down south, we are making huge
progress.”
Michelle has a lot of plans for the future, including continuing to embrace the
doors that open up and sharing her skills with others. “So many doors have opened in
the past few years. This isn’t a pretty industry to be in… it requires a lot of hard work
and sacrifice, but the rewards are so great and I love that I have the opportunity to
share what food can do to bring people together with others.”
KUBO
LOBSTER ROLL
Asiatic Cuisine
By Virginia Lang
Photos provided by Kevin Sinicki
and Kubo Restaurant
Green Tea Cured Salmon
skirt steak
T
his is so exciting for me, I feel like I’ve written hundreds
of restaurant reviews in my head over the many
years I’ve been a foodie. But now, it’s real, so real,
and I have butterflies. I confessed this to my boyfriend, Kevin,
on the short car ride to KUBO Asiatic Cuisine for our “working
date.” I hoped the nerves wouldn’t mess with my digestion. That
would truly be cruel irony.
You kind of have to hunt for KUBO. It’s tucked away in a
lonely little corner of the Crystal Tree Plaza on US Hwy 1 in
North Palm Beach. But trust me when I tell you, it’s well worth
the hunt. There’s quaint outdoor seating in front, or comfortable
simple seating inside. I like the upbeat but subtle Top 40 Asian
videos playing on the big screen TV and throughout the restaurant.
We decide over our first drinks that the Asian version of
Britney is pretty hot, just not as curvy as our American one.
Every dish that comes out of the open kitchen at KUBO
is like edible art, which I love. It’s art that makes you wonder
where Chef Roy Villacrusis has been all your life. The Sake
Tsuke is beautiful thick strands of green tea cured salmon,
intertwined with fried basil and loganberries. Inside the
loganberries is a firm square of yuzu kosho jelly, and all around
the dish is a sauce made of the same sweet Japanese citrus jelly.
It’s so refreshing and clean, and it’s award-winning! It won best
appetizer at the UPC event held at The Colony Hotel.
When the lobster roll came out we actually felt bad about
messing it up by eating it. It’s just so pretty. But, that feeling
passed quickly. This may have been our favorite dish of the
night. Forget every lobster roll you’ve ever had anywhere else.
This one was meatier than a sumo wrestler on steroids, and you
will love the meatiness. (Is that even a word?) Chef Roy uses
practically a whole lobster to make each roll. No frozen lobster
I eat some exotic and crazy stuff, but my man is more of
normal, adventurous or simple, there is a dish here for you. The
well-informed server will be your guide, just tell him what you
The menu at KUBO offers the traditional sushi, sashimi
without wine and sake parings as well. The individual plates
are smaller at KUBO and average around $9-15 each, so it’s not
cheap. But, it’s an excellent value for the quality of food and
superior service.
As we were getting ready to leave, Chef Roy told us that
he plans on proposing to his childhood sweetheart. It’s going
Say Goodbye to
the Lunchtime Blues
By Kristen Doyle
W
hether you brown bag it,
head to the local diner, or
eat lunch at home every
day, it is incredibly easy to get bored with
the same old lunch choices day after day.
A turkey sandwich gets old after eating it
several days in a row and leftovers from
dinner the night before aren’t always as
appetizing the next day. What should you
do if you have the same old, same old
lunchtime blues? Shake things up and
think outside of sandwiches and leftovers
for lunch.
Wraps are one great way to make
your typical lunch a little more interesting.
Yes, they are a lot like a sandwich,
but there’s something about rolling up
your favorite ingredients into a delicious
tortilla that makes it not seem quite as
humdrum. A little bit of light ranch dressing,
some turkey and veggies and you
have yourself something even heartier
than a sandwich. Grilled chicken, barbecue
sauce and some Monterey Jack
cheese warmed up and wrapped into a
tortilla is anything but boring. There isn’t
much out there that doesn’t taste great in
a tortilla. Get creative and see how you
can wrap up your next lunch.
Soup is another option for curing
the lunchtime blues. Make up a big batch
of your favorite soup over the weekend,
then divide the batch into smaller, single
portion containers that are freezer safe.
Each morning, as you head out the
door for work, grab a container of soup.
16 HERLIFEmagazine.com
The biggest
change you can
implement to your
ordinary sandwich
is to switch up the
bread that you use.
When lunchtime rolls around, put your
soup into the microwave for a couple of
minutes, stir, and you have a quick and
easy lunch that is sure to stick with you
the rest of the work day.
A delicious salad can be just as easy
to take for your lunch as soup or a tortilla
wrap. Similar to soup, many pieces of
the salad can be done ahead of time so
all you have to do in the morning before
you leave for work is grab your bowl and
go. On Sunday evening (or as soon as
you return home from the grocery store)
wash your vegetables and do any chopping
and dicing necessary. If you want
meat on your salad, do any prep work to

that ahead of time too. Grill your chicken, chop your ham or
cook your bacon and place it in individual containers as well.
After you have completed all of your prep work, place each
ingredient in separate airtight containers in your refrigerator.
Each night prior to work, grab a large storage container and
simply choose whatever ingredients you want in your salad,
place them in the larger container, give them a quick toss and
you are good to go. Either keep a bottle of your favorite salad
dressing at work in their fridge, if one is available, or pour the
dressing in an individual container to take to work with you. A
nice, healthy, fresh salad is definitely something to make lunch
a time you look forward to.
If you still want to stick to sandwiches everyday for lunch,
there are a few ways to make a simple sandwich more interesting.
The biggest change you can implement to your ordinary
sandwich is to switch up the bread that you use. Instead of
normal, everyday sandwich bread, try using a pita or artisan
bread. A French loaf or tasty Ciabatta bread, which can be
found in most grocery store bakeries, turns a sandwich from
ordinary to extra special. You can always make simple changes
to your condiments as well. Trade out ordinary yellow mustard
for sweet honey mustard. Mayo with a kick of hot sauce gives
your sandwich an extra bit of flare.
Lunchtime doesn’t have to be the same thing day after
day. It is easy to make a few small changes to your lunch
routine that will make your blues go away and will instead give
you a lunchtime to look forward to!
The Teriyaki Experience
By Kristen Do yl e
A
s a busy, working mom, there are times where
I want nothing more than to serve my family a
healthy dinner without having to do all the work
to prepare it. I don’t want fast food. I want something I can
feel good about feeding to my family at a price point that won’t
break the bank. I want it to be healthy and I want to be able to
family at night.
Enter the Teriyaki Experience, an Asian-inspired quickserve
franchise, providing consumers with an alternative to the
calorie-laden fast food choices on the market today. Palm Beach
County owners, David Trumpler and Derek Felbinger, found
out about the Teriyaki Experience franchise in a networking
group and were immediately inspired by the unique concept of
the restaurant. They purchased the first Teriyaki Experience
restaurant in Palm Beach County last year and are actively
planning expansions to share the restaurant with other areas in
the very near future.
“Teriyaki Experience is a restaurant concept that is very
big in Canada, but fairly new to the United States,” says Derek.
“Everything on our menu is made to order, so you get to decide
exactly what goes in each dish. We use fresh, raw ingredients
then cook everything over high heat on Teppanyaki grills. By
utilizing these special grills, we are able to have everything
At Teriyaki Experience you are going to get a fast, flavorful,
made-to-order healthy meal, all for around $10 or less.”
Teriyaki Experience offers a menu full of items you won’t
find in most fast food and food court restaurants. “Some of our
most popular items are the Chicken Teriyaki, Teriyaki Salmon
and our Spicy Udon Soup Bowl served with your choice of meat,
veggies and more. Our portion sizes are very generous, which
is another benefit to choosing our restaurant. We serve food
that you can feel good about serving to your family.” Teriyaki
Experience also provides nutritional information sheets to all
on the menu is 600 calories or less. For those guests searching
for more traditional Asian comfort foods, the restaurant also
has a full selection of flavorful choices.
“We want our guests to have the ability to design their
meals for their particular tastes and diets. We have fresh sushi,
salads, soups and gyoza dumplings, in addition to our great rice
and noodle bowls, so we can satisfy almost anyone’s particular
cravings,” says Derek.
In addition to Teriyaki Experience, David and Derek own a
consulting firm called Square D Marketing. “When we bought
into the concept of Teriyaki Experience, we definitely practiced
what we preach to our consulting clients,” shares David. “We
believe and help our clients to understand that if you see an
opportunity that you are inspired by and believe in, you need to
seize the moment and jump on the opportunity right away. In
order to make dreams happen, people have to move past their
fears and run with it.”
David and Derek share their expertise with start-up
entrepreneurs who are looking to move past an idea and who
are ready to jump in with both feet. “We discovered that most
of our clients weren’t getting the support they needed from the
other resources they were using. They were getting help from
people who teach from books…not from consultants who have
been in their shoes before. We offer our clients low-cost options
and support them as they execute their ideas and make their
Big Ideas
Everyda y Wa ys
to Cel ebrate
with Your Kids
By Lisa Taranto
M
ost of us can easily recall our favorite Christmas
or our high school graduation. We may even
vaguely recollect toddler birthdays because our
parents were likely to have snapped photographs, recorded
videos, made scrapbook entries or even written a memoir to
note the occasion.
For life’s big events, we tend to place the day on a pedestal
and bring out the big guns to celebrate.
But what about everyday accomplishments—a perfect
score on a math quiz, a day without whining, a clean house?
What about celebrating just being here and happy? How can
we make these petite feats just as memorable, not only for our
children but for us as well?
GET IDEAS
It seems there is a “national day” for everything. Did you
know there is a national Pet Obesity Day, a National Popcorn
Day and a Measure your Feet Day? Find quirky ideas from
online calendars and make your own celebration. Here are a
few ideas to get you started commemorating the small stuff.
GET EXCITED GRANDPA
Grandparent’s Day may sometimes be overlooked.
Celebrate this September holiday any time of the year and
Grandma and Grandpa are sure to be thrilled.
If Mimi and Papa live close by, why not take them a simple
lunch (made by you and your little one) or offer to freshen up
their porch with a few potted plans. If they live a long car ride
away, send them a homemade card.
Set up an online video conferencing tool like Skype® on
both of your computers. You can video chat with them live via
the Internet almost any time of the day.
CHORES DONE
Assigning chores may sound like a chore, but when kids
contribute to household duties, they gain responsibility and feel
like they are helping at home.
Place their chore list in plain sight and have children mark
off their tasks as they complete them. Some children may be
motivated by an allowance, but others may look forward to
a family picnic or movie night to celebrate a week’s worth of
honest work.
AFTER SCHOOL
If you pick your children up after school, play mini
scavenger hunt when they get in the car. Buy a cheap treat
or toy at the dollar store and hide it somewhere reachable in
the back seat. Place a note near your child’s seat with a clue
written on it. For instance, “Billy, look in the spot where you
place your drink in the car.” He will then search the cup holder
to find another clue. Make sure you are safe and that all of
the clues are found without having to unbuckle his seat belt.
The last clue tells him where his treat is located. Although the
sweet surprise only costs a dollar, the memories will be worth
Adopt. Not a dog - a child! Yes. That’s right. You and your
children can adopt a child through Compassion International,
Christian Children’s Fund or any organization that helps
children in need. What a great way to teach a child about the
care and concern of others, especially those who don’t have
much.
DO IT UP OLD SCHOOL!
Play a game you loved as a child. Try your hand at Lincoln
Logs, dominos, marbles, jacks, hoola hoop or make your own
play dough. Call it back to old school night - eat popcorn, and
drink cocoa together.
RAIN, RAIN, COME THIS WAY!
Instead of dodging the rain, why not get dressed in your
goulashes and raincoats and head outside for a rain party.
Deliberately step in the puddles; use an umbrella and run
around as if it were sunny.
SNUGGLE UP
Most families could use a little snuggle time. Throw your
child’s favorite blanky or robe inside the dryer and have it
warm and waiting after a weeknight bath. They love the heat of
the blanket, and will remember the cozy feeling long after the
warmth is gone.
JOURNAL IT
Buy a family journal and keep in a special spot. Write kind
notes to each other inside. Share an experience from your day,
thank someone for a nice gesture, or talk about your excitement
for an upcoming event. If your children aren’t old enough
to journal yet, then you make the entries and your little loved
one can read them when she gets older.
EARTH DAY CAN BE EVERYDAY
Teach your child the importance of keeping the earth
green and safe. Each day, have kids put all recyclables in an
easy-to-reach recycling bin. When the bin is full, plan an Earth
Day dinner to celebrate. Visit a farmer’s market and cook
organic, simple, healthy foods. Drink tap water and use no
paper or plastic for the meal. For dessert, gather on the front
porch and share a big, juicy watermelon.
BIRD WATCH
Make a simple bird feeder with a large pinecone and
peanut butter. Cover the pinecone with the nutty concoction
and hang it near an easy-to-view window. In no time, your bird
buffet will attract the most beautiful feathered friends for hours
of enjoyment.
Commemorating holidays, graduations and birthdays are
significant but standard. Why not celebrate the daily feats?
Rather than chalk them up as regular routine, jazz them up
with fun festivities that children will remember (and perhaps
pass on to their offspring) for generations to come. TIM
Simple Steps
You Can Take
To Be Green
By Linda Maranno
M
any of the choices we make in our daily lives
can have an impact on our planet, but you don’t
necessarily have to make drastic changes to your
everyday routine to be greener.
We’ve put together a few simple ideas that you can easily
incorporate into your busy day that won’t require a lot of effort
to implement. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to try at least a
couple of things from the following list in the next few months.
GO PAPERLESS
According to the Natural Resources Defense Fund, the
paper industry is the third largest industrial contributor to
global warming pollution. Pulp and paper mills that use virgin
timber generate hazardous air pollutants that include dioxins
and other cancer-causing chemicals. Here are three simple
ways to reduce your personal consumption of paper.
Contact your bank, credit card and utility companies to
ask if they offer electronic statements. Not only does this save
paper, it also protects you against identity theft by reducing the
amount of private information in your mailbox.
Make the switch to paying all of your bills online directly
from your bank account. It’s simple to set up, and you’ll wonder
why you ever wasted time writing and mailing checks each
month.
It is estimated an average of 41 pounds of junk mail is sent
to every adult in the U.S. each year. Approximately 44 percent of
this mail goes into a landfill unopened. You can do your part to
reduce this unnecessary waste by getting your name removed
from mailing lists of companies you’re not interested in. You
can call them directly yourself or pay an online service to do it
for you, such as 41pounds.org, which charges $41 to stop your
junk mail for five years. They donate one-third of each new
subscriber’s fee to an environmental or community organization
of their choice. For more information visit www.41pounds.
org.
SAVE ENERGY—UNPLUG ELECTRONICS
According to the U.S. Energy Star program, 40 percent
of the electricity used by home electronics is consumed while
the items are turned off. The biggest energy drainers are TiVo,
40 percent of the electricity
used by home electronics
is consumed while the
items are turned off.
cable/satellite dish boxes, sound systems, VCRs/DVD players,
computers, printers, cable/DSL modems and TVs. By grouping
these electronics onto one surge protector or power strip, you’ll
be able to easily remove their power source all at once, rather
than unplugging each item individually.
USE NATURAL CLEANERS
EPA studies have shown that indoor pollution levels can be
two to five times higher than they are outdoors, and household
cleaning products play a major role in contributing to that
pollution. Toxic chemicals used in these products evaporate
into the air we breathe and have a negative impact on our
health. Ordinary products that you already have in your home
can be used alone or in combination to
create safe and effective cleaners. Baking
soda is an all-purpose nontoxic cleaner
that deodorizes, removes stains and
softens fabrics. It can be used as a very
effective alternative to toxic commercial
oven cleaners. Just sprinkle baking
soda on the oven bottom and spray with
enough water to create a paste. Let it
set overnight and then wipe off in the
morning. This process can also be used
to clean tubs as well. Just let the baking
soda paste set for at least 30 minutes and
then remove with a soft rag. I’ve tried this
on both the oven and tub, and it works
great! Distilled white vinegar is a much
safer alternative to most window and
glass cleaners which contain ammonia,
alcohol and other chemicals that can
irritate your eyes and lungs. Use a
mixture of vinegar (1/3 cup) and water (1
cup) in a spray bottle. The combination
of baking soda and vinegar can be used
to clean toilet bowls—sprinkle baking
soda into the bowl, then squirt with white
vinegar and scour with a toilet brush to
clean and deodorize. To keep your drains
smelling fresh and clog-free, pour baking
soda (1/2 cup) down the drain followed
by white vinegar (1 cup). Cover drain
and allow the mixture to foam for about
15 minutes. Then pour a large kettle of
boiling water down the drain.
RECYCLE
According to the National Recycling
Coalition, the average American discards
seven and a half pounds of garbage every
day. The majority of this garbage ends
up in landfills, where it’s compacted and
buried. Recycling is one way you can
have a significant impact, and it doesn’t
really require as much effort as you
might think. The simplest approach is
to start with one category that doesn’t
require a lot of effort, such as recycling
plastic shopping bags—almost every
grocery store as well as Walmart and
Target stores have containers at the entrance
of their stores where you can drop
off plastic bags to be recycled. Another
category that’s simple to recycle is plastic
water and soda bottles. If you live in an
apartment building that doesn’t have
access to curbside pick up for recycling,
you can drop off those plastic bottles at
either Target or Whole Foods—both have
recycling bins for both #1 (PETE) or #2
(HDPE) plastic in their stores.
Costume Jewelry
vs.
Fine Jewelry
By Rachel C. Murphy
D
iamonds are a girl’s best friend, right? We all learned
that from Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film Gentlemen
Prefer Blondes. As she extols the virtues of earth’s
hardest stones, we can all daydream of diamonds and gold.
Back in reality, diamond jewelry costs a pretty penny.
Does that mean that we have to go unadorned? Absolutely not!
Costume jewelry fills in the gaps between those pieces that
we will pass down to starry-eyed little girls as they play in our
jewelry boxes.
In an age where man-made materials are almost as
durable as gold and silver, what’s the difference between
costume jewelry and the good stuff? We’re going to find out.
Most jewelry in the past has been forged from gold, silver,
platinum or an alloy. As many of these metals are very soft in
their original state, metals are mixed to increase their strength
and ability to resist corrosion.
According to most reputable jewelers, fine jewelry is defined
by the materials from which it is comprised. Fine jewelry
will contain real gemstones, whether organically sourced or lab
created. Precious gemstones are typically considered diamonds,
rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls. These stones will also
be set in fine metals, such as gold, silver and platinum.
Costume jewelry is much more widely worn, since it is
typically much more affordable. While it is less expensive, that
doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a lack of quality. Another
term for costume jewelry is fashion jewelry.
While costume jewelry still contains jewels, they are
typically made of glass, plastic or paste. They give off the same
sparkle for a lot less coin. Many people must be careful when
wearing costume jewelry because of metal allergies, such as
nickel. It is common now to make costume jewelry as nickelfree,
or hypoallergenic.
There is now emerging a third category, often known as
Many fine jewelry designers
are now working in mediums
that were once the domain of
costume or bridge jewelry.
bridge jewelry. Bridge jewelry will contain higher quality metals,
such as sterling silver, and semiprecious stones. Sterling
silver is an alloy that increases its strength and durability.
Semiprecious stones include jade, turquoise, amethyst, lapis
lazuli and garnet. Many birthstones are considered semiprecious
stones.
While the basic differences are in materials, costume
jewelry has made great strides towards the style that fine
jewelry once set. Many fine jewelry designers are now working
in mediums that were once the domain of costume or bridge
jewelry.
Tiffany and Co. is a perfect example. Their iconic Tiffany
charm bracelets are priced in the fine jewelry range, but they
are forged from sterling silver. While much of the price difference
is because of their name and reputation, the materials
that they are working with are the same as much lower priced
pieces.
David Yurman is another example. His twisted rope
jewelry is made of sterling silver and semiprecious stones such
as topaz and onyx.
Just as clothing goes in and out of style, so does jewelry.
Some materials that were once considered precious have now
decreased in value when more stores of them were found.
Amethyst is one such example. Once thought to be one of the
26 HERLIFEmagazine.com

arer stones, new deposits have flooded the market, making
lower quality stones more widely available and thus able to be
incorporated in more costume jewelry.
When looking for jewelry to wear on a day-to-day basis,
costume jewelry definitely wins out. With creative designs at
rock bottom prices at your local boutique or even Target, it’s
hard to pass up. Wooden beads, hammered copper, feathers and
rhinestones all help flesh out a well-accessorized wardrobe.
If you want costume jewelry that isn’t mass-produced,
check online sites such as etsy.com. This online store provides
a venue for thousands of unique artists working in both commonplace
and fine metals. If you’re looking for a specific piece
and still can’t find it, many of the artisans will make something
specifically for you.
Fine jewelry is generally given to commemorate a holiday,
birthday or special occasion. Whether you are looking for an
engagement ring, tennis bracelet or a beautifully crafted pair
of earrings, fine jewelry designers are available all over the
country. Whether you breakfast at Tiffany’s or start your kisses
with Kay, there are plenty of people designing exquisite fine
jewelry.
Another great place to look for both fine and costume
jewelry is estate sales and antique markets. Many vintage pieces
will sparkle just as brightly today as they did when the original
wearer slipped them on.
Either way you go, jewelry is a way to express yourself in
big or small ways. Know what you’re looking for and you can
create a sparkling personality in gold and silver every day.
QI’ve recently gone back out into the dating scene. I was
married for five years and with my husband for five
years before that. My girlfriend set me up with this
great guy. We went on a date Friday night and had a great time.
After I got home, I texted my girlfriend to tell her how things
went. Much to my surprise my girlfriend informed me that my
date got another girl’s number at some point in the night. My
dilemma is he has asked me out again. Should I let it slide and go
out with him?
-Jackie, Jupiter, FL
Q
I’m talking to this guy I’ve known casually for a little
over a year now. He’s really nice and we have been talking
on the phone and texting back and forth for a few
weeks. He has asked me to go away with him for the weekend. Is
that moving too fast?
-Amber, West Palm Beach, FL
ADear Jackie,
I’m sorry to tell you if he is getting another woman’s
number while on a date with you that is not a good sign.
Maybe it was a one time thing, but chances are it’s not. If he is
on a date with you that’s where his attention should be. If the
date was a bomb and you didn’t hear from him again, that’s
one thing, but the fact that he asked you out again tells me he
was having a good time too and is trying to be a player. If you
want to go out with him again you risk getting hurt. My advice
is simple—if he calls, tell this loser you are not interested. You
deserve better than that.
ADear Amber,
It all depends. I think the biggest question is do you feel
safe? If you feel safe going with him; I say go for it! You
may end up having a really good time. Remember you don’t
have to do anything you don’t want to do. If you feel overly
pressured or that you may end up doing something you don’t
want to do, then stay home. But if you feel that you know him
well enough I say go. After all, we could all use a little get
away.
Careers with
Fl exibl e Hours
By Candi Smith
I
f someone had told me twenty years ago that I’d be
working from home, setting my own schedule, doing
what I love and making money…I would have asked
them what they were drinking! But that’s exactly what I’m doing
as a freelance writer for HERLIFE Magazine. I’m living my best
dream.
Today there are many options available to those who want
to get off the 9-to-5 hamster wheel and start doing work that fits
into their schedules and lifestyles. It’s hard to hit the slopes if
you’re at work from sunup to sundown. And how can you enjoy
the beauty of the night sky if you always work the graveyard
shift?
Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking outside of
your current career and focusing on opportunities that will help
your life become more flexible:
Consider working for a temp agency. Oftentimes, they
have jobs that are either full-time but short-term, or long-term
but part-time. They might even be able to send you on multiple
assignments so that you can work Monday through Wednesday
at one job, and Saturdays at another. This would leave you three
days a week to pursue other passions.
Call centers operate around the clock, so they’re always
looking for personnel with flexibility in their schedules. And,
because good help is hard to find, they are also likely to work
with your schedule to allow you to take off the hours you need.
Good freelance writers are in demand. You just have to
know where to look, and you have to be skilled. There are
numerous handbooks available to help you find markets for
your writing, ranging from poetry to particular genres. You can
also find books that will help you find agents who can help you
get published.
Industries that safeguard society (such as police officers,
firefighters and security guards) have flexible hours, sometimes
working three days in a row and having four days off. They
also have both daytime and evening hours so you can find a
schedule that works best for you.
One little-known but busy career is that of dispatchers.
They are found at fire and police departments, and cab and
trucking companies. Since good dispatchers are hard to find
due to the unconventional hours and nature of the job, most
employers are willing to pay well and work with the employee’s
schedule.
Many computer careers involve skills that can be
performed remotely, and are in demand. If you are into Web
design and maintenance, these jobs can be performed from the
comfort of your own computer, and pay a nice rate.
Many degreed professionals are afforded the luxury of
setting their own hours. These include accountants, psychologists,
psychiatrists and social workers. Once they establish a
consistent client base, they keep their business busy for years.
Hairstylists have a great deal of flexibility in setting their
hours. Some specialize in bridal hairdos while others may focus
on coloring. In today’s hair industry, techniques run the gamut
from extensions to highlighting, so hairstylists can choose to be
36 HERLIFEmagazine.com

as productive and profitable as their schedules allow.
Those who are in the real estate industry, ranging from
agents to interior designers and stagers, work on schedules that
fit both their clients and themselves. In today’s market, these
careers require a bit more hustle than was needed in the past.
But, the payoff is that when the market picks up, so will their
client base and their profits.
The food service industry needs people day and night to
keep their businesses running. Skills range from food prep to
servers, cleaners to managers. With about a 40 percent turnover
in personnel, restaurants work to keep good employees.
So, if a fast-paced environment with the possibility of tips
interests you, there are dozens of places waiting for you!
One career that pays very well is that of a court reporter.
These positions require specialized training, but once you’ve
completed the course and some hours of actual reporting, you’ll
usually be assigned to a particular jurisdiction or judge. When
there are no court dates to attend, you are off for the day as
well. But you also have the flexibility of picking up part-time or
contract work to increase your income.
Medical transcriptionists are in high demand, so if you
find that listening and typing for accuracy and speed are in
your skill set, you might consider this career. With a few pieces
of specialized equipment, you could be on your way to working
on your own schedule.
Today’s market offers many opportunities for the go-getter
who wants to work hard and play harder. Find a career that
offers flexibility and fill that niche with your skills. And make
time to enjoy what life outside of work has to offer!
How to Pick
a Real Estate
Agent
By Lisa All en
Q
uick: think of the most important financial decisions
you will make during your lifetime. Chances
are investing in real estate in the form of buying,
and then perhaps selling a home, rank close to the top of your
list. Problem is, real estate is a world unto itself; learning how
to navigate through the maze of questions, rules and regulations
is not a job to take lightly and probably one you want to
enlist help with.
The first step into the real estate world should be choosing
an agent. Like choosing any other professional, there are a
multitude of variables that factor into what makes an agent
right for you and your circumstance. Like any other profession,
agents specialize in different areas within their field. An
expert at residential real estate is not necessarily an expert in
commercial transactions, and a buyer’s agent might not be your
best bet if you are selling off property. Knowing what your own
goals are, then, is vital to making a determination about who is
best to work with.
In her book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Buying & Selling
a Home, author Shelley O’Hara says, “When you announce
your desire to purchase a house, you may be surprised at the
number of real estate people who want to represent you. Agents
come out of the woodwork. You won’t have to worry too much
about finding an agent—you do need to worry about finding a
good one.”
And therein lies the challenge—finding the right agent for
you. What might seem like a logical plan for a buyer, seeing
an enticing property advertised, and then calling the agent
listed, is actually a backwards way of approaching the process.
Finding an agent first who will represent you and your goals is
“You won’t have to worry
too much about finding an
agent—you do need to worry
about finding a good one.”
really the first step.
Here are a few general guidelines to help you choose an
agent that is right for you:
Listen to recommendations, but don’t automatically
choose because of them. Ask your dentist, your letter carrier
or your hairstylist and chances are they can all recommend a
realtor they know. Instead of just taking ‘he’s a great guy’ as a
recommendation, develop a list of questions that dig deeper.
38 HERLIFEmagazine.com

How long they worked together, how the realtor handled stressful
situations, would they recommend this person to family
members, and other probing questions open up the dialogue
so you really get a better idea of their relationship and depth of
knowledge.
Interview everyone. Stellar recommendations alone
don’t mean that you and an agent will communicate well or
feel comfortable with each other. Interview the realtor before
making any decisions. How long have they been in real estate?
What are three ways they are different from other agents?
The American Cancer Society
Would Like to Help You
Celebrate Another Birthday!
An expert at residential real
estate is not necessarily
an expert in commercial
transactions, and a buyer’s
agent might not be your
best bet if you are
selling off property.
Will you connect me with other professionals? What haven’t I
asked you that I need to know? Do you offer a guarantee? Ask
enough questions that you feel completely comfortable with
their answers, and watch their non-verbal clues as well. Do
they pay attention? Do they ask probing questions in return? Do
they constantly check their phone or is their attention on you?
How long does it take them to call you back? If you are selling,
ask what their marketing plan is for your property. Insist on
specifics.
Make sure they know your area. An agent can be an ace
with paperwork but if they don’t know the area you are working
in, you might be at a disadvantage. Knowing the history of
an area, the demographics beyond statistics and having their
own ties to the community means they are invested not only in
the immediate transaction but in the community overall.
Do your research. Is this agent merely a real estate agent
or are they a REALTOR?® It may seem insignificant, but there
are real differences between the two titles, most importantly
that a REALTOR® is a member of the National Association of
REALTORS® and bound by the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. You
can learn more about the specifics of the Code at www.realtor.
org.
All in all, choosing a real estate agent is almost like choosing
a doctor. You want someone who knows their business
inside out, someone who is well respected and someone who
specializes in the situation you find yourself in. Taking the time
to skim through print ads, online sites, recommendations from
friends and family, and even dropping into a few open houses to
find potential candidates is a positive first step to establishing a
relationship that will serve you, and your financial goals,
well.
