Teaching and learning<br />

The distinctive nature <strong>of</strong> teaching in a university is its interdependence with research in the development and<br />

communication <strong>of</strong> knowledge.<br />

• Recipients <strong>of</strong> Teaching Development Grants and Teaching Conference Awards make a report to the Committee.<br />

Winners <strong>of</strong> Teaching Awards have the opportunity to contribute to the publication UC Teaching. A colloquium on<br />

teaching is held annually to explore issues <strong>of</strong> teaching and develop discussion on teaching developments across<br />

campus. Such a colloquium was held during 2002. The <strong>University</strong> supports staff who wish to study for a Diploma<br />

or Certificate in Tertiary Teaching. During 2002 four staff were enrolled in the Diploma programme and one in the<br />

Certificate programme.<br />

• Dr Tim Bell (Computer Science) was awarded a National Tertiary Teaching Award for Sustained Excellence in<br />

Teaching at a ceremony held in Wellington.<br />

• A review is in progress on the availability <strong>of</strong> resources for thesis students.<br />

• The revised course approval procedures (see Objective 3.1) includes an evaluation <strong>of</strong> all resource needs (staff;<br />

library; IT; teaching and technical assistance; space; etc) and resource availability for new programmes and courses.<br />
