Information and Application Form<strong>Discretionary</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong>/<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong>Please apply for EITHER <strong>Discretionary</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong> OR <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong>.As an applicant for <strong>Discretionary</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong>:1. You must be a New Zealand or Australiancitizen or permanent resident.2. You must be 16 years <strong>of</strong> age or older by31 December in the year <strong>of</strong> application.3. You must have gained a minimum <strong>of</strong> 14credits in an approved subject at level 2towards NCEA, and have met the literacyand numeracy standards required forUE.4. You may not have attempted to qualify forNew Zealand <strong>University</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong> six monthsprior to applying.*As an applicant for <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong>:1. You must not hold a university entrancequalification. However, you must havemet academic standards equivalent to thatrequired for university entrance.2. You will be required to provide evidence thatyou have met an appropriate numeracystandard e.g. NCEA Level 1, and evidence<strong>of</strong> your competence in the Englishlanguage, e.g. NCEA credits at level 2 orabove in Reading and Writing, or equivalent.NB: <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong> is for applicantspresenting with exceptional circumstances, e.g.home schooling. It is not an admission route forthose who have failed to achieve UE.All applicants:1. You must be under 20 years <strong>of</strong> age on 31 March for first semester or full year courses, or on 1August for second semester courses in the year in which you wish to begin your studies.2. You will require a recommendation from an advisor as to your readiness and suitability foruniversity study. An advisor will be your Principal, if you are still at school, or a <strong>University</strong> LiaisonOfficer or some other educational authority (e.g. the CEO <strong>of</strong> a Private Training Establishment) if youhave left school. You will normally have an interview with your advisor and this will contribute totheir recommendation.3. You should supply a brief submission in support <strong>of</strong> your application giving reasons why <strong>Discretionary</strong><strong>Entrance</strong>/<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong> is required. You may also include letters <strong>of</strong> support from others.4. You may apply for one qualification only. If a preferred degree/course has limited entry a secondnon-limited option is permitted.• If your application is successful you must enrol in the year for which admission has been applied,otherwise it will lapse.• If you are declined admission, and if further supporting evidence becomes available after the closingdate, you may seek a review <strong>of</strong> the decision by writing to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic).• <strong>Discretionary</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong> and <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Admission</strong> give you the right to enrol at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong>, they do not guarantee admission to any particular programme <strong>of</strong> study.• It is important that all prospective students are competent in English. The <strong>University</strong> does not acceptresponsibility for academic failure due to the lack <strong>of</strong> competence in English.* School students sitting 3 or more NCEA Level 3 subjects may apply for <strong>Discretionary</strong> <strong>Entrance</strong> to undertakesummer programme credit courses. If UE is not gained the student may continue with the course and ifsuccessful will be credited with it when UE is achieved.


Documentation required1. A certified copy <strong>of</strong> your birth certificateor a certified copy <strong>of</strong> the ‘PersonalIdentification’ page from your passport.2. Certified copies <strong>of</strong> your academic record,for example,• NCEA Level 1 or School Certificateresults• NCEA Level 2 or Sixth FormCertificate results• and any other academicachievements, e.g., unit standards.national diplomasFor this purpose a certified copy is a copy that hasbeen certified as a true copy by a Justice <strong>of</strong> thePeace, solicitor, notary public, your school’sPrincipal, or an <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>of</strong> the institution that issuedthe original document and must bear the <strong>of</strong>ficialstamp and signature <strong>of</strong> that person.NB: Do not send original documents.Application feeThe non-refundable fee for application is$60 (incl GST). A non-transferable chequemade payable to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>,together with full documentation should beattached to the application form.Application ProceduresKeep this half <strong>of</strong> the page for your owninformation.1. If you are still at school, completeyour part <strong>of</strong> the application form, thentake the form to your Principal. YourPrincipal will forward your completedapplication form to the <strong>University</strong>.2. If you have left school, complete yourpart <strong>of</strong> the application form, then post itto the Liaison Officer at the nearest<strong>University</strong>. You should then telephonethe Liaison Officer to arrange aninterview and recommendation. TheLiaison Officer will forward yourcompleted application form to the<strong>University</strong>.3. If you have left school and liveoutside a <strong>University</strong> city you shouldtelephone the nearest Liaison Officer toarrange an interview andrecommendation. This could bearranged at the local high school whenthe Liaison Officer next visits that school.The Liaison Officer will forward yourcompleted application form to the<strong>University</strong>.
