In his latest letter, David notes that 

while Tesco representatives are speaking 

with some local businesses and community 

groups, it is vital that Mr Clarke also 

offers a formal response to the concerns 

raised in the wider community. He said: 

“The Tesco development continues to be 

a real cause for concern when I meet people 

in Macclesfield, and I am still receiving 

letters and emails objecting to the plans. 

“Macclesfield town centre is at a critical 

stage with its regeneration plans. 

“As a result, it is vital that the right 

choices are made for our future prosperity 

and that local people are listened to. 

“I am disappointed that Mr Clarke has 

not replied to the concerns of local residents 

and I am asking for a full response 

in the near future.” 

Revealing the plans last year Tesco said 

it wanted to be part of the wider investment 

in the town. A spokesman said: “Our 

plans for Barracks Mill will help to regenerate 

an important site that has stood 

derelict for seven years.” 

It also says a questionnaire issued as 

part of its pre-application consultation 

revealed that 55% of those that responded 

were in favour of the plan.

organised on behalf of the club 

by Brad Snelling, who said: “We 

want to make this a really special 

occasion and thought it 

would be fantastic to find a new 

voice to sing the National 

Anthem at the Proms. 

“From a singer’s point of view, 

I can’t imagine it gets much better 

than that.” Nicholas Smith is 

conducting the Proms Symphony 

Orchestra on the day and is 

keen to find some fresh talent. 

He said: “We’re looking for 

someone who will really shine 

in front of a big audience and 

someone who’ll enjoy the occasion 

too. I imagine it’s an 

experience you’d want to tell 

the grandchildren about!” 

Auditions for ‘Solo Superstar’ 

will take place on Friday 25 May.

Games on as Olympic 

Torch burns brightly 

THOUSANDS of people will line the 

streets for the once-in-a-lifetime 

opportunity to see the Olympic 

Torch as it makes its way through 

Cheshire later this month. 

The big event takes place on 

Thursday May 31 and organisers 

are expecting large crowds will turn 

out to cheer the flame on its journey 

to the London Games. 

The Torch will be carried through 

the streets of Macclesfield between 

9.35am and 10.10am. 

The relay will start on Congleton 

Road by the 30mph signs near the 

junction with Moss Lane, then pass 

the Flowerpot pub and onto 

Oxford Road. 

After passing All Hallows Catholic 

College it will turn left onto Chester 

Road and pass the Broken Cross 

roundabout until the 40mph signs. 

The flame is also visiting Jodrell 

Bank during its journey through 

Cheshire. Torchbearers include 

Linda Roche, 48, from Macclesfield. 

More than 300 people have 

volunteered and received training 

to act as stewards during the 

flame’s visit.

Guiding bash 

PRESTBURY’S Guides are preparing 

for their annual Guides’ bash, 

which once again promises to be a 

major fundraising success. 

The highly-popular coffee morning 

will take place on Saturday June 

30 at Prestbury Village Hall from 

10am. Visitors can enjoy the many 

stalls and activities, including a 

bouncy castle, chocolate tombola, 

a grand raffle and free ‘Fit Kids’

endorsement 

for Barnaby 

A MASS ‘ring-in’ will take 

place in Macclesfield’s 

Market Place to celebrate 

the grand opening of this 

year’s Barnaby Festival 

on Thursday 21 June. 

The event, scheduled to 

begin at 6.45pm on Thursday 

June 21, is being 

choreographed by conductor 

and Director of 

Macclesfield’s Silk Opera, 

Nicholas Smith. 

He said: “We wanted to 

open the third Barnaby 

Festival with a flourish, 

with as many bells as possible 

ringing together - so 

church bells, hand bells, 

tubular bells, door bells, 

mobile phone bells, alarm 

bells, cycle bells…you name 

it, we want you to ring it!” 

Bell-issimo! was inspired 

by the national three-minute 

bell-ringing event, ‘All the 

Bells’ which will launch the 

London Olympics in July. 

The whole town is invited 

to come along and ring a bell 

for Barnaby, or just enjoy the 

atmosphere. 

There will be bellringers 

at St Michael’s, St Peter’s 

and Christ Church, ringing 

a total of 30 bells.

for sea cadets 

BOLLINGTON and Macclesfield sea cadets played 

an important role in a poignant service to mark the 

30th anniversary of the loss of HMS Ardent in the Falklands 

War. 

The youngsters, from the Bollington-based TS 

Ardent, provided the Royal Guard for the Duchess of 

Gloucester at the event in Plymouth. They also got to 

meet the Duchess who is patron of the HMS Ardent 

Association.

THIS year’s Alderley Edge 

Festival attracted a record entry 

of 2,700 children from across the 

UK, who performed in hundreds 

of music, speech and drama 

classes over five days. A number 

of special classes took place to 

celebrate both the Queen’s 

Jubilee and the Olympic Games. 

Singers raise the 

roof in South Africa 

FORMER police officer Neil Broomfield 

from Wilmslow lifted four titles at the 

British Pie Awards. Neil, 34, started his 

North Pie Co in 2008. His awards 

included a gold for a steak and oyster 

stout pie with nettles. 

WILMSLOW’S big Spring Clean has 

been taking place with businesses 

and individuals working to smarten 

up the town. The project is being led 

by the town council and the 

Wilmslow Local Area Partnership 

and continues until May 20. 

WILMSLOW High School’s 

Summer Ball will take place at the 

town’s Rugby Club on Saturday 

May 19. The evening includes a 

three course meal and dancing. 

CHESHIRE East Council has 

renewed its plea for adoptive 

parents to come forward to help 

children and young people. More

special information evenings being 

held later this year, including one at 

at Disley Primary School at 6pm on

A GROUP of talented youngsters 

from The Ryleys School in Alderley 

Edge captivated audiences with 

their singing during a musical tour 

of South Africa. 

During their visit the group of 13 

youngsters, aged seven to 13, raised 

money for disadvantaged local children 

with a talent for music. 

Accompanied by Jenny Grant, the 

choir travelled the Garden Route and 

spent a week in Cape Town. 

As well as performing in an annual 

Music Festival in Oudtshoorn, which 

featured musicians from across South 

Africa and overseas, the group also sang 

at Vlakteplaas, a small farm school in a 

poor community. 

They went on to visit the Cango Caves 

where the children demonstrated the 

fabulous acoustics with a performance 

of Siyahamba, to the delight of the visiting 

tourists. 

The choir tour raised a just over £4,000 

which will go towards furthering the 

music education for disadvantaged children 

and for basic food supplies. 

Jenny Grant, pictured with the youngsters 

performing, said: “This has been 

one of the best choir tours I have been 

involved in. 

“The children’s performances were outstanding 

and we are thrilled that we 

could raise money to help some of the 

poorest children in South Africa to continue 

their musical journey.” 

WILMSLOW’S Martin Hewitt 

has spoken of his pride in the 

team of injured servicemen 

he led on an expedition to 

conquer Everest after hazardous 

conditions forced 

them to abandon the attempt. 

The 31-year-old and his colleagues, 

all injured serving in 

Afghanistan or Iraq were hoping 

to raise cash for injured 

servicemen and celebrate the 

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by 

reaching the summit. 

But conditions, including the 

most dangerous ice fall in a 

decade, meant the bid had to be 

called off. 

Martin said he was “gutted”. 

But added he was, “proud to be 

the manager of such a determined,

NEW guidelines have been produced 

by Cheshire East council to support 

people to live independently. The 

private sector housing financial 

assistance policy sets out what sort 

of help it will offer to older people 

and people with disabilities to repair 

and adapt their homes. More than 

£1.4million has been set aside to 

implement to policy. 

THE Cheshire Cheese Loop – the 

very first long distance horse 

ride in Cheshire East – is now 

open to the public. Named 

Laureen’s Ride, the route runs 

around the parishes of Over 

Peover, Chelford and Ollerton 

and is ideal for horse riders with 

friends or family on bikes. 

VOLUNTEERS are wanted to take 

part in the Carrs Balsam Bash at the 

popular Wilmslow spot. The event on 

Sunday May 20 is a chance to help

Have your say on the 

future of transport 

PEOPLE who use public 

transport across Cheshire 

East are being consulted 

about the future of their 

services. 

The council says the review 

will look at those routes that 

are under-used and see if flexible 

and community transport 

can better meet their needs. 

It says the responses it 

receives will be used to shape 

its future decisions on how the 

available budget is spent and 

which services the council 

should continue to subsidise. 

Councillor Rod Menlove, 

cabinet member with responsibility 

for environmental 

services, said: “This review is 

all about looking at our public 

transport network with 

fresh eyes.” 

The council says it needs to 

reduce the amount it spends 

on public transport by approximately 

18 per cent over the 

next 12 months.

a “Big Lunch”picnic on Sunday 

June 3. London Road will be 

closed to traffic to enable a massive 

street celebration to take

A host of activities include 

face-painting, fancy dress and 

an exhibition of jubilee pictures 

by local schoolchildren. The 

parish council is also planning 

to hand out commemorative 

coins to children.

biggest original musical competition

Final of Live and Unsigned 

which is part of Live Fest - London’s 

biggest indoor festival. 

Gaby will be competing against 

the most talented bands and 

artists in the country in Huddersfield 

on Sunday May 20. She

It outshone other entrants with its 

impressively wide reach, supporting 

more than 11,000 older people a year 

to improve their health and wellbeing. 

It provides 70 services and 

activities including Tai Chi, Keep Fit, 

choirs and arts and craft. 

The services help older people live 

healthy and fulfilled lives. Projects 

include Men In Sheds, which reaches 

out to isolated older men.

Manager at The King’s Fund, 

said: ‘There is a bit of sparkle about

College urges small business sector Equilibrium 

to take up apprenticeship challenge strengthens 

client team 

MANY Cheshire employers have 

already discovered the benefits of 

taking on an apprentice and the 

announcement of a new government 

grant means local businesses 

have even more reasons to recruit 

fresh talent. 

The £1,500 grant is available to 

employers with less than 250 staff as 

an incentive to take on new apprentices, 

or to train existing staff members 

under an apprenticeship scheme. 

Macclesfield College’s East Cheshire 

Business School has been providing 

support to employers interested in taking 

on apprentices for 10 years, and 

helps businesses from a wide range of 

industries to claim back up to 100 per 

cent of apprenticeship training costs. 

Following this latest announcement 

it will now be able to help small 

businesses claim back even more. 

At the launch of the scheme, Business 

Secretary Vince Cable said: 

“Apprenticeships are at the centre of 

the Government’s skills policy because 

we know that they work. 

On the day of the announcement 

McCann Manchester Apprentice Lucy 

Holland-Jones met Mr Cable, pictured, 

and spoke to him about the marketing 

apprenticeship developed by Macclesfield 

College with the company, to meet 

its specific needs. 

On Thursday May 24 the college is 

hosting an Apprenticeship and Jobs 

Fair, providing an opportunity for 

businesses to recruit quality candidates, 

and people to find out about 

current apprenticeship and other job 

vacancies.

Networking is a success 

BUSINESS leaders from across the 

area got together for a successful networking 

event organised by 

Macclesfield Chamber of Commerce. 

The event, held at the Tytherington 

Club, attracted representatives from across 

all sectors, including the legal profession, 

property and travel. 

They included Dr Elaine Stokes of Creative 

Business Improvements, Fiona 

Collison of Harts Ltd and Robin Atkins 

of the Cheshire Independent. 

COUNTY IS IN THE

Sisters Gail and Sian Titchener,

will be holding their first 

craft-only venture in Alderley 

Edge’s Festival Hall on Saturday 

May 26 from 10.30am

Gail said: “‘Following the 

success of Altrincham’s 

monthly market we’ve been 

looking for another Cheshire 

venue for a while now and 

when we saw the Art Deco 

splendour of the Festival Hall 

- home to the village’s thriving

- we knew it was perfect.”

For one day only the Adamley Silk Mill 

has opened its store cupboards and is 

bringing its textile treasures to sell at 

The Heritage Centre. 

Adamley has been producing traditionally 

printed fabric at its mill in the 

nearby village of Langley for the past 

50 years, using water sourced from its 

own reservoir. 

The mill houses an extensive archive 

collection of original designs, including 

the internationally renowned David 

Evans Archive. Many of the silks for sale 

at the Heritage Centre have been 

inspired by this archive and are to be 

found in international textile designer’s 

latest collections. 

Silk Museum Director Penny Asquith 

Evans said: “We are very pleased to be 

hosting the Silk Sale at the Heritage Centre, 

it feels great to be showing and selling 

local contemporary silks in the town.” 

To encourage visitors to immerse themselves 

in ‘all things Silk’ visitors to the 

Silk Sale will be able to visit the Silk 

Museum sites at a special reduced rate 

on that day too.

THE current Northern 

Chamber Orchestra Macclesfield 

concert season 

will finish with a flourish 

on Saturday 19 May in the 

Heritage Centre. 

The eighth concert will feature 

Raphael Wallfisch, one 

of the most celebrated cellists 

performing on the international 

stage. He will be 

playing John Joubert’s new 

Cello Concerto. 

Joubert, one of the most 

respected and distinguished 

of senior British composers, 

chose Raphael and the NCO 

to premiere his Cello Concerto 

in the pre-Olympic 

Games Music Festival – 

Music Nation, which 

received critical acclaim. 

This performance at the 

Heritage Centre will be only 

its third performance, so this 

represents a real coup for 

Macclesfield audiences. 

Raphael said: “It is a real 

privilege to have the opportunity 

to play this new piece by 

John Joubert, and it’s such a 

delight to perform it with the 

Northern Chamber Orchestra, 

who play so sympathetically.” 

The programme also 

includes Haydn’s Symphony 

No.76 – which displays hearty 

cheer from the outset, and is 

bursting with melodic and 

rhythmic invention - showcasing 

Haydn’s individual genius. 

Holst’s ever-popular St Paul’s 

Suite features haunting, folktype 

melodies and an 

extremely well-known tune is 

introduced in the middle – the 

Tudor ‘hit’ Greensleeves.

Cheshire Show freezes its ticket prices 

CHESHIRE Show organisers are helping 

hard-pressed families beat the recession 

blues by freezing ticket prices. 

Prices for the two-day event at the 

Cheshire County Showground at Tabley, 

will be kept the same as last year to 

make sure people don’t miss out on one 

of the highlights of the summer. 

Executive Director Nigel Evans said: “The 

credit crunch has left many families looking 

for more affordable days out and we 

feel that it is more important than ever 

to offer the best possible value for money 

at this year’s show.” 

For the first time the show, on June 19 and 

20, will include a 4x4 course where visitors 

can enjoy a thrilling off-road driving experience. 

A special guest at this year’s event is 

the only female winner of the TV programme 

One Man and His Dog, Katy Cropper. She will 

be demonstrating her impressive skills by 

duck and geese herding. 

One of the UK’s leading quad and motorbike 

riders, Jason Smyth, will perform a 

heart-stopping show in the main ring 

where there will also be music from the 

Scots Guard Association Pipe and Drum 

Band. 

Nigel added: “We have got some great

in Warrington. 

Tatton’s event takes place on 

Sunday, July 15, at 3pm. The 

event will play out on the ground, 

the thousands of animals being shown 

and judged and other crowd favorites 

such as the Roberts Bakery Food Hall and 

the Sainsbury’s Agri-Centre. 

“We have decided to freeze our ticket 

prices because it is important that the show 

continues to engage with the public. 

Despite the economic difficulties of the 

last few years our attendances have risen 

to over 80,000 people which proves we 

must be getting the balance right.”

for concessions, £6 for children and £30

THE Rotary Club of Alderley Edge 

and Bollin Valley handed over 

cheques to a number of good causes 

at a special celebration evening. 

The money, raised through a series of 

local initiatives, was handed over the 

Francis House, Diabetes UK and East 

Cheshire Hospice at the event held at 

the Coach and Four in Wilmslow.

Bollington’s new lifesavers 

launch recruitment drive 

THE newly-formed Bollington and District 

Community First Responders are 

looking for volunteers and sponsors to 

help save lives in the community. 

The new emergency first responders 

cover Bollington, Kerridge and Pott 

Shrigley. Volunteers will be trained to 

respond to emergency calls through the 

999 system in conjunction with North 

West Ambulance Service. 

They will be shown how to give life-saving 

care in emergencies such as cardiac 

or respiratory arrests, convulsions, diabetic 

emergencies, haemorrhage 

lacerations, strokes and fainting and people 

who are unconscious. 

A group spokesman said: “They may 

often be the first on scene to administer 

vital treatment. Sometimes the 

ambulance is not always local and the 

first four to five minutes in a cardiac 

arrest situation is crucial. 

“The ambulance service supplies the 

equipment but we rely entirely on sponsorship 

from local businesses and the 

support of the community members to 

fund the running of the group. All training 

is free and we only ask for your time.”

Grant opens the gate 

to better Bollin Way 

A PROJECT to improve 

access along the Bollin 

Valley Way has been given 

a welcome £12,413 cash 

boost. 

The grant has been given 

to the Bollin Valley Partnership 

from The Veolia 

Environmental Trust, which 

supports community projects. 

The money will be used 

to replace stiles with gates 

along the first section of 

the 25 mile route, from 

Partington to Dunham, as 

well as general improvements, 

interpretation, 

seating and signage. The 

gates will provide easier 

access to an expanse of local 

green space along the valley 

for the disable, and families 

with pushchairs. 

Emma Houghton, Community 

Projects Officer, 

Bollin Valley Partnership, 

said: “This is a great boost 

for us and we can’t wait to 

get the access improvements 

underway.” 

The improvements are 

expected to take three 

months and are set to start 

this summer following 

negotiations with the 

landowners. 

AN ALDERLEY EDGE schoolgirl, 

Lauren Summer, had a real ball 

raising more than £1,000 for Cancer 

Research UK. 

The pupil at Alderley Edge School for 

Girls, pictured with the cheque she 

handed over to the charity, organised 

a special masquerade ball for Year 10 

and 11 pupils which included a threecourse 

meal, a disco and auction. 

A school spokesman said: “Lauren 

put a lot of work into organising the 

masquerade ball and we know it was 

thoroughly enjoyed by all those who 

attended. 

“The school would like to congratulate 

Lauren for her efforts in fundraising 

for such a worthy cause and of 

course, all those who supported.” 


LATEST figures have revealed a rise 

of almost 5% in the numbers of 

people involved in Scouting in the 

Alderley District. There are more than 

900 members in the area, which

RECIPE OF THE MONTH 

Pepper Tuna Carpaccio with Cucumber Sorbet 

INGREDIENTS: 

500g Centre cut Tuna loin 

4 Cucumbers ; 3 egg whites 

270g glucose ; 180g cup sugar 

150ml lemon juice – approx seven 

1.5 tsp salt 

Wasabi paste to taste – about 1/5 small 

tube 

METHOD: – FOR T HE SORBET 

• Blitz the cucumber and pass through 

a fine sieve 

• Heat together the salt, sugar, glucose 

and lemon juice until sugar has dissolved 

• Add the above liquid to the cucumber 

• Whisk the egg whites and fold into the 

cucumber mixture 

• Add some wasabi – to taste 

• Churn in an ice cream maker 

PEPPERED TUNA 

Sprinkle the Tuna loin with Sea salt flakes 

and cracked black pepper

Using a little, oil sear in a smoking hot 

pan for 25seconds each side 

Then Set a side in the fridge until the sorbet 

is firm enough to scoop 

SOY DRESSING 

100ml soy sauce 

100ml rice wine vinegar 

200ml Olive oil 

1tsp toasted sesame seeds 

Juice of 1 lime 

Whisk all ingredients together when you 

need the dressing. 

This month’s recipe comes from Richard 

Maun, head chef at The Stanneylands 

Hotel in Wilmslow. 

THE SAFFRON ROOM 

WHEN entering this popular Indian 

Restaurant in Prestbury, on the 

original site of The White House 

Restaurant, it is patently clear no 

expense has been spared in its 

transformation. 

The décor oozes style and the warm 

friendly welcome was the perfect introduction. 

My partner Gayle and I went 

along early on a Sunday evening and we 

were surprised to see how busy it was. 

I was pleased because it would test their 

standards of service to the limits. 

Gayle started with the Tandoori 

Fish which was recommended by a 

friend. She was not disappointed – perfectly 

cooked plaice in a medium spiced 

sauce – her comment “Brilliant”. 

Mohammed MD Ali, the head waiter, 

recommended his own creation for 

me –Tandoori Garlic King Prawns 

with his own spice dip. 

The full flavour of the prawns was 

retained perfectly through the Tandoori 

and spice dip. Quite simply, the 

best I have ever tasted! This dish is on 

the menu as a main course but can be 

ordered as a starter. 

Mohammed looked after us superbly 

and recommended the following as the 

main course: Blue Water Duck, Balti 

Lahor Gosht and Chicken Achary, 

Pilau Rice with peas and Raita (mint). 

These dishes are some of the restaurants 

most popular. 

The Lamb Balti and Chicken were 

excellent. All the flavours harmonised 

brilliantly and the meat was cooked to 

perfection. However, we both felt that 

the Blue Water Duck was overshadowed 

by the spices but it was still very 

enjoyable. We had a glass of the house 

white wine with the fish and the house 

red with the main course. They were both 

excellent and it was refreshing to note 

that there was a choice to suit all palates. 

Feeling somewhat replete, Gayle 

chose the beautifully presented chocolate 

mint parfait and I was very happy 

to sample a scoop of Caramelite ice 

cream and another with Passion Fruit 

and Mango. A perfect finale! 

The Saffron Room fits in perfectly with 

Prestbury. It really is fine dining at its 

very best and attracts those who appreciate 

fine cuisine in stylish and relaxing 

surroundings. Strongly recommended!

Rain fails to dampen Alderley Luxury Events launch 

THE heavens opened and the rain 

came down but it didn’t dampen 

the mood at the launch of Alderley 

Luxury Events – which was well 

attended by the invitation-only 

audience. 

The aim was to raise money for The 

Lovern Foundation – a charity set up 

to tackle the real needs of critically 

ill children at Alder Hey Hospital in 

Liverpool. 

Cash was raised with a raffle, a silent 

auction and an auction courtesy of Robson 

Kay auctioneers. 

Prizes included a weekend roadtrip 

in a Beck Porsche 550 spider replica, a 

£2,500 designer watch (Henry Johnstone) 

and 5* adult only holiday to 

Palma (Worldwide Escapes). 

Amanda Freeman of ALE said: “We 

are delighted with how the day went 

and more importantly feel that it has 

placed the ALE committee strongly on 

the Alderley Edge map. The second 

event is already in the making and is 

planned for June”.

Hearty walkers raise over 

£1,500 for life-saving team 

MORE than 40 intrepid 

walkers strode out along 

the Middlewood Way to 

raise much needed funds 

for Macclesfield Hospital’s 

cardiac rehabilitation unit. 

Ex-patients, friends, families, 

staff and local supporters, 

pictured, completed the sixand-a-half 

mile sponsored trek 

to collect more than £1,500. 

The cash raised by the 22nd 

annual Cardiac Rehab sponsored 

walk will be used to 

purchase a life-saving defibrillator.

RECENTLY retired Bramhall surgeon 

Peter Sykes has lifted the lid 

on hospital life with the publication 

of his first novel. 

The First Cut is an entertaining 

collection of stories set in a fictitious 

hospital in the North West 

of England. 

Peter is also a Vice President of 

the East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield 

and his author royalties 

are being donated to the hospice. 

Peter worked at Altrincham General 

and Trafford General Hospital 

as a consultant surgeon for 25 years. 

He insists the stories are fiction but 

acknowledges they are based on 

his experience as a doctor.

The call goes 

out for more 

egg donors 

THE Spire Regency Hospital in Macclesfield 

is urging local women to 

donate their eggs in order to keep 

up with demand following the success 

of its newly launched fertility 

service. 

There are currently over 20 couples waiting 

for egg donation at the centre, which 

was set up at the private hospital in February. 

It says eggs are welcomed from 

women aged 35 and under, from all races 

and background subject to screening. 

There is currently a national shortage 

of egg donors and the Human Fertilisation 

and Embryology Authority (HFEA) 

has recently brought in new guidelines 

to ensure that donors are reimbursed fully 

for their cooperation. 

Spire Regency Fertility is led by Mr 

Edmund Edi-Osagie, a leading regional 

fertility expert and is the head of Reproductive 

Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital 

in Manchester, one of the UK’s most successful 

NHS fertility operations. 

He said: “We’re delighted with the 

response to the service so far and we’ve 

got many people registered.” 

There are a number of reasons a woman 

may require an egg donation including 

suffering poor quality eggs, cancer survival 

and associated damage, or simply 

have depleted eggs due to age. Fertility 

services at Spire Regency Fertility include 

fertility profiling, infertility investigations 

and treatment, and assisted conception 

(including IUI, IVF/ICSI, egg and sperm 

donation, egg sharing and egg freezing).

and increase earlier detection

over 50, asking them to 

visit their GP if they have 

experienced the following 

symptoms for three weeks or 

more: Persistent cough; a 

change in a cough; unexplained 

shortness of breath. 

They add: ‘The risk of lung 

cancers gets worse as you get 

older, but spotting the early 

signs and symptoms of what 

could be lung cancer and getting 

these checked out by a 

doctor can mean that the disease 

is diagnosed more quickly. 

Earlier diagnosis is key to 

boosting cancer survival. 

Making people more aware of 

what to look out for, and 

encouraging them to visit 

their GP with anything 

unusual, is vital.’

Becky heads a new 

expanded nursery 

EARLY Years teaching specialist 

Becky Thornton has been appointed 

to lead Greenbank Preparatory 

School and Day Nursery's new Pre- 

School Unit. 

Currently being built at the Cheadle 

Hulme site on Heathbank Road, the new 

Pre-School Unit will see an expansion of 20 

places in Greenbank's early years provision. 

Becky will teach three and four year-olds 

both in the Day Nursery, which provides 

part and full-time care and education 

options and Greenbank's Kindergarten, 

which guarantees entry to the main Reception 

class. Becky, 30, from Didsbury, who 

has been teaching for 10 years is currently 

teaching Year Two children at Thorngrove 

Primary School in Cheadle Hulme. 

She said: “It is such a privilege to 

be around children in their early 

years and watch them grow and 

develop as individuals. “You must create 

a nurturing and stimulating environment 

in which the children can 

make lots of friends very easily and, 

above all, enjoy every part of their 

learning and development.” 

Greenbank Headmistress Janet Lowe 

said: “We chose Becky from a large 

field of high quality candidates because 

we watched her teach and instantly 

saw she had a fantastic rapport with

Disley community centre

The morning meetings,

Although they are 

called “Men’s Breakfasts”, 

women are more than 

welcome. The breakfasts 

are held on the last Saturday 

of the month with up 

to 30 people attending. 

They are a chance for 

parishioners to get together 

to discuss key issues in 

an informal setting. 

Mr Rutley addressed 

the group at the Church 

House Inn and enjoyed a 

full English. He then took 

part in a question and 

answer session and is following 

up on some of the 

issues raised. 

He said: “It is good to 

see so many people getting 

involved and making 

new connections in our 

community.”

PRESTBURY Bowling Club, which is enjoying 

a fine start to the new season, is urging 

more people to look at taking up the sport. 

The club is holding a special family open 

day on Sunday May 20 from 2pm-6pm. 

Members will welcome visitors on the 

green to “have a go”. A club spokesman 

said: “Remember though to wear shoes 

without heels. The Open Day is planned 

with novice competitions, free refreshments 

and the opportunity to sign up for 

training for those who want to take up 

crown green bowls. 

“We are looking to recruit new members 

for both social and competitive 

bowling and have facilities for new members 

including bowls that can be borrowed 

so that visitors can try their hand.” 

The Club is located behind the Parish 

Hall and the Prestbury Methodist 

church, beyond the car park, off Macclesfield 

Road. 

Training is provided in the club’s academy, 

where club coaches teach both 

novices and bowlers with experience, how 

to improve their game. 

The spokesman said: “This is linked to 

regular match training and practice sessions 

in “Red v Blue” games for keen 

members throughout the season. 

“Prestbury Bowling Club also provides 

frequent social bowling occasions at weekends 

for all members, and weekday “roll up” 

sessions to which all members are welcome.”

ALDERLEY Edge Hockey Club’s triumphs 

on and off the pitch continue 

– this time with a major European 

accolade. 

The European Hockey Federation has 

named the high-flying Cheshire Club runner-up 

in the European Hockey Club of 

the Year 2011 competition. 

Alderley came second to German club TSG 

Heilbronn. The honour follows the opening of 

the club’s new state-of-the-art playing facilities 

called The Edge – and a host of domestic 

wins including being named English Hockey’s 

club of the season. On the pitch the trophies 

have continued – with five of its 12 

teams winning promotion this season, as 

reported in last month’s Cheshire Independent.Alex

National Manager of Clubs and Facilities, 

said: “For them to be recognised on the 

European stage is very well deserved. 

“I know how hard many of the club 

members have worked over the past 10

New skipper relishes challenges ahead 

NEW Cheshire skipper James Duffy is relishing 

the prospect of leading the county 

in its summer campaign for cricket glory. 

This year’s squad is a mix of seasoned 

campaigners and a few new faces, including 

Calum Rowe from Alderley Edge and 

Macclesfield’s Khalid Sawas. 

And that new-look Cheshire got their 

campaign up and running with a tight onerun 

win against Cumberland in the Minor 

Counties Trophy. Duffy, who has taken 

over the captaincy from long-standing 

skipper Andy Hall who stepped 

down at the end of last season, said: 

“It is very exciting for me. 

“With several of last year’s squad no 

longer available to play for the County, 

we are drawing on the large pool of talent
