Spectacular Homes <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> the press, including a giant teak bath seating 10—to make<br />

it, the <strong>com</strong>pany tracked down the holder <strong>of</strong> the record for<br />

hand-turning the world’s largest wooden bowl. An innovative<br />

underground car-lift for the same house, based on a design for<br />

an aircraft carrier lift, was nominated for an international civil<br />

engineering award, <strong>com</strong>ing a more-than-respectable second to<br />

the Copenhagen metro system.<br />

These projects would not be possible without putting precision<br />

and technical skill at the heart <strong>of</strong> everything the <strong>com</strong>pany does.<br />

It takes at least six weeks on a new project to get initial ideas<br />

to flow, sketching and re-sketching them until they are just<br />

right, before an incredibly detailed drawing package shapes the<br />

final scheme—all before any work has been done on-site. Philippa<br />

Thorp Design doesn’t shy away from doing things the hard way<br />

if it gets the right result. For this penthouse duplex, part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

concrete floor was cut away to create room for the new staircase:<br />
