Spectacular Homes of London
Beautiful bespoke joinery, the latest technology and handcrafted
furniture are strong features of Interiors with Art’s
work, and Shailja and Sanjay will scan the globe to source the
best products, be it Italian leather, South American silver, semiprecious
stonework or the finest silks and embroideries. Shailja’s
passion for art and textiles provides a unique trademark,
however: the siblings’ embroidery workshop in India crafts fabrics
for each project, from modern-looking appliquéd suede and
leather to recreations of traditional Ottoman designs that can
take months to make. Using hand-dyed threads and vegetable
pigments results in textiles that are warm and delicate, blending
seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary schemes.
The detailed planning that goes on behind-the-scenes may be
invisible to clients, but they are the most important part of the
job. Interiors with Art uses a comprehensive inventory system that
tracks and records every item down to the last curtain tassel—so
if a piece of textile hasn’t left India to get to an upholsterer in the
UK, it’s instantly recognised and remedied. With business being
done across several time-zones, it saves time, and leaves the
designers to get on with what they do best—creating a perfect,
totally individual new home for every client.
above a macassar ebony dining table and chairs; hand-embroidered panels and
cushions surround. This Mayfair townhouse’s dining room is pieced together with a
carved silk rug with leather binding, polished plaster walls and soft kidskin paneled
Bottom right:
A ribbon mahogany centre table anchors a first floor drawing room. Lying beside
polished plaster walls, silk curtains were designed with hand-embroidered leading
along with silk and crystal passementerie. Silk mohair and pleated velvet upholstery
define the sofas that intermingle with a crocodile leather bench; ripple sycamore
arm chairs are skillfully presented with kidskin leather and hand-embroidered,
appliquéd and beaded cushions.
Bamboo and silver leaf wallpaper is paired with walnut floors, both of which serve
as stunning accents around a bespoke, walnut and mahogany dining table. Bespoke
silver leaf and stained oak cabinets with murano glass lamps, an embossed, faux
suede center table with polished French nailing and zebra print hair on hide stools
give this double reception space a charming look. Concluding this dramatic Central
London room are cut velvet cushions on moiré silks and velvet upholstery with art
works by Miro and Dali.
