The Blue Star Memorial Program
honors service men and women. In 1945,
the National Council of State Garden
Clubs adopted the program and began a
Blue Star Highway system, which covers
thousands of miles across the Continental
United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
Virginia has some of the oldest Blue
Star Memorial Markers in the US with the
first one dedicated on August 24, 1949.
Since 1949, VFGC, districts and clubs have
placed over 45 Blue Star Markers along
the highways and byways of Virginia as
well as at national cemeteries, parks,
veteran’s facilities and gardens.
These oldest Blue Star Memorial
markers have weathered along the roadsides
for over 50 years and now need
some TLC. You can help by participating
in new program, “Blue Gloves for Blue
Stars.” Plan to attend your district meeting
and make a $10 donation to the Blue
Star Memorial Fund and receive a pair of
blue gardening gloves. Your support of
this project will help VFGC refurbish those
markers placed before 1960 as well as any
others in need of repair.
Donate at your district meeting and
wear your “blue gloves” proudly as you
help make the Blue Stars in Virginia shine
brightly again!
