Electric <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong><br />

With the FEMA <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting system a dream of<br />

many innovative model makers has come true.<br />

The <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting systems can basically be deployed<br />

in two operati<strong>on</strong> modes:<br />

Functi<strong>on</strong>al descripti<strong>on</strong>:<br />

With the FEMA <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting systems all comm<strong>on</strong><br />

internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engines can be started safely by<br />

radio c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>on</strong> ground as well as in the air. For the universal<br />

use there are two different variati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong><br />

starting systems:<br />

Universal <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting system<br />

For this model, <strong>on</strong>ly the starting device is attached<br />

directly to the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine. The <strong>starter</strong><br />

engine is placed separately from the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine inside the fuselage (depending <strong>on</strong> balance point or<br />

space requirements). The power from the <strong>starter</strong> engine<br />

to the starting device at the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine is<br />

transmitted via a cardan shaft with variable length.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Compact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting system<br />

Starting of the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine via the radio<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

With this operati<strong>on</strong> mode, the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine can be started <strong>on</strong> the ground as well as in the air<br />

via the radio c<strong>on</strong>trol. In this case the NC-storage battery<br />

is placed inside the model.<br />

Safe starting of the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine is <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

possible <strong>on</strong> ground<br />

This operating mode <strong>on</strong>ly requires the attachment of the<br />

starting device and the <strong>starter</strong> engine inside the model.<br />

The <strong>starter</strong> storage battery (glow plug engines additi<strong>on</strong>ally<br />

require a plug heater) is placed in a starting box.<br />

The <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> is manually switched <strong>on</strong> and off via<br />

micro switches.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>trol of electric <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting systems<br />

The electric <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>trolled via micro switches<br />

operated from an IC-servo. For the secure starting<br />

of the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine it is necessary that<br />

the <strong>starter</strong> engine starts at the activati<strong>on</strong> of the engine<br />

immediately with full power to prevent the kick-back of<br />

the combusti<strong>on</strong> engine. (Please do not use electric c<strong>on</strong>trollers)<br />

For glow plug engines you also need a plug warmer (stock<br />

number 9593 B) which is switched <strong>on</strong> and off directly by<br />

the receiver via a channel or mixer.<br />

Current supply of the electric <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong><br />

The current supply of the <strong>starter</strong> engine and of the heater<br />

plug <strong>on</strong>ly requires a <strong>starter</strong> storage battery to which also<br />

the electric plug warmer is c<strong>on</strong>nected.<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong> for starting storage batteries<br />

For starting storage battery you have to use highamperage<br />

(16 A) NC, NiMh or LiPo batteries that are<br />

also deployed in electric flying model aircrafts. Every kit<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tains detailed assembly instructi<strong>on</strong>s and a manual<br />

for the trouble-free assembly of your electric <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong><br />

starting system.<br />

If you d<strong>on</strong>‘t find a suitable <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> for your<br />

internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine in our product range, please<br />

Different to the universal <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting system, the<br />

starting device and the <strong>starter</strong> engine of the compact <strong>on</strong><strong>board</strong><br />

<strong>starter</strong> are attached directly to the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine. Thus the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine and the<br />

<strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> form a compact unit.<br />

The universal <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> starting system of figure I for<br />

aircraft engines can be attached to all comm<strong>on</strong> single<br />

cylinder glow plug engines. In additi<strong>on</strong> to the basic kit<br />

each motor type requires an adapter kit. The complete<br />

set c<strong>on</strong>tains the adapter set for the respective motor<br />

type.<br />

For the operati<strong>on</strong> of the glow plug you also need the plug<br />

warmer (stock number 9593B) which is not included in<br />

the kit.<br />

If you use the plug warmer you <strong>on</strong>ly require <strong>on</strong>e storage<br />

battery for the operati<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> from<br />

which the <strong>starter</strong> engine and the glow plug are fed.<br />

The basic kit and the complete kit include all mechanical<br />

and electric comp<strong>on</strong>ents that are necessary for the<br />

operati<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong>. The universal <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong><br />

starting system can also be attached as a compact versi<strong>on</strong><br />

(see figure II). The holder plate is not included in<br />

the delivery, you can build it <strong>on</strong> your own or purchase it<br />

from us.<br />

These <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong>s were developed especially for<br />

the use in ZENOAH engines with a cubic capacity of<br />

20-29 cm² and are universally suitable for park-flyers,<br />

helicopter, car and ship models.<br />

The <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong>s are designed as compact <strong>on</strong><strong>board</strong><br />

<strong>starter</strong>s, i.e. the starting device and the <strong>starter</strong><br />

engine are mounted directly to the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine. Thus the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine and the<br />

<strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> form a very compact unit.<br />

The complete driving unit can also be easily attached to<br />

vibrati<strong>on</strong> absorbing elements in the model. The choice<br />

for the best suited <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> for your model<br />

simply depends <strong>on</strong> your combusti<strong>on</strong> engine and the<br />

available space in your model.<br />

the free-wheel separates the combusti<strong>on</strong> engine from<br />

Assembly kits:<br />

The kits c<strong>on</strong>tain all mechanical comp<strong>on</strong>ents as well as<br />

the <strong>starter</strong> engine with metal gearbox and all electric<br />

comp<strong>on</strong>ents required for the integrati<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong><br />

<strong>starter</strong> into the model.<br />

The <strong>starter</strong> storage battery is not included in the kit.<br />

and car models if there is enough space in your model.<br />

Functi<strong>on</strong>ality:<br />

The mechanical c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong>s is<br />

similar for all models. The power is transmitted from the<br />

<strong>starter</strong> engine to the crank shaft of the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine via the gear reducti<strong>on</strong> with integrated freewheel.<br />

These <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong>s are designed as compact <strong>on</strong><strong>board</strong><br />

<strong>starter</strong>s, i.e. the starting device and the <strong>starter</strong><br />

engine are mounted directly to the internal combusti<strong>on</strong><br />

engine. Thus the internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine and the <strong>on</strong><strong>board</strong><br />

<strong>starter</strong> form a compact unit. The kit c<strong>on</strong>tains all<br />

mechanical comp<strong>on</strong>ents as well as the <strong>starter</strong> engine with<br />

metal gearbox and all electric comp<strong>on</strong>ents required for<br />

the integrati<strong>on</strong> of the <strong>on</strong>-<strong>board</strong> <strong>starter</strong> into the model. The<br />

FEMA engine support plate for ZG 45/62 and the engine<br />

support for ZG-74/80 are included in the kit.<br />

The engine support for ZG-74/80 has the same dimensi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and fi xing holes as the standard engine support<br />

made from sheet steel. You can also mount the ZG-62/45<br />

in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with the »Hydro-Mount-System Pitts« of<br />

company T<strong>on</strong>i Clark. You can order the engine support<br />

plate and all required fi xing holes under stock number<br />

9724-02 directly from us.<br />

To reduce the danger of a backstroke for the Titan/<br />

Zenoah engines with magneto igniti<strong>on</strong> we recommend<br />

the assembly of the electr<strong>on</strong>ic unit with stock number<br />

9724110. The electr<strong>on</strong>ictlnit functi<strong>on</strong>s without auxiliary<br />

energy and provides an adjustment of the igniti<strong>on</strong><br />

point at starting and stopping the combusti<strong>on</strong> engine.<br />

There is no danger of a backstroke if the engines are<br />

equipped with a microprocessor igniti<strong>on</strong> PCI of the<br />

air tires. Solid tires stand up to the<br />

highest demands and am suitable<br />

for both grant sail planes and<br />

models with engine. The tires are<br />

extremely tough with an optimum<br />

damping. Extreme stress caused by<br />

the weight of the model does not,<br />

flat tire. Though the tires are very<br />

We deliver axles for models with engine made out of<br />

high-quality tempering steel that match our solid tire<br />

wheels of a diameter of 90-178 mm and a hub diameter<br />

of 6.1/8.1mm. The threaded length is measured in such<br />

a way that it is possible to attach also the wheel cover.<br />

A nut secures the attachment of the wheel. The bearing<br />

of the axle is made out of high-quality aluminium and<br />

has a diameter of 10/12 mm. The axle is attached to<br />

the smooth stem in order to avoid a notch effect that is<br />

Universal balancing machine for propellers of a diameter of 12” (300mm)<br />

to 40” (1000mm) and borings of 8.0/10.0/12.0 and 20 mm in diameter.<br />

The maximum hub thickness of the propeller is 48mm.<br />

The FEMA-balancing machine is world-wide the <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e<br />

that lets you balance-out the propellers lengthways and<br />

sideways to the rotor blades. Due to the simple handling<br />

and to the high-precisi<strong>on</strong> display, every model maker<br />

can now balance-out exactly the propellers <strong>on</strong> his own.<br />

A propeller that is perfectly balanced-out protects the<br />

internal combusti<strong>on</strong> engine and the radio c<strong>on</strong>trol from<br />

harmful vibrati<strong>on</strong> and also reduces the noise development<br />

to a minimum.<br />

Blade rotor head with a fastening boring of 3, 4, 5, and 6 mm<br />

Using this rotor blade balancer equipped with a level, rotor<br />

blades can be statically balanced with great precisi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The reading is accurate to as low a value as 0,05g at a<br />

distance of 20cm. This is achieved with the aid of the<br />

built-in level in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with practically fricti<strong>on</strong>-free<br />

pendulum-type bearing<br />

Prior to bolting a pair of rotor blades <strong>on</strong>to the blade holder<br />

the centre of gravity of each blade has to be established<br />

first and, if necessary, corrected, The c.o.g. positi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

pair of blades, too, must be identical. It is <strong>on</strong>ly then that<br />

a pair of blades can be balanced with the unit.<br />

In ease of 3-bladed or multi-bladed rotors the heaviest of<br />

the rotor blades has to be found first; the lighter <strong>on</strong>es have<br />

then to be brought up to the weight of the heavier <strong>on</strong>e<br />

- <strong>on</strong>e by <strong>on</strong>e - by applying lengths of pressure sensitive<br />

tape at the centre of gravity of the blades.<br />

The Blade rotor head ist prepared for blades with 3, 4,<br />

Retractable undercarriages<br />

The retractable undercarriages are available<br />

in four sizes:<br />

A retractable undercarriage is essential for scale<br />

and semi-scale models. The “FEMA retractable<br />

undercarriages” are being used successfully for years<br />

and have dem<strong>on</strong>strated their ability in flight practice.<br />

Mr Gardemin wrote in his test report about retractable<br />

undercarriages:<br />

»FEMA retractable undercarriages are without any<br />

technical paraphernalia but they are designed 100%<br />

functi<strong>on</strong>al and sturdy.«<br />

We still feel obliged to this statement, now and in future.<br />

The new generati<strong>on</strong> of FEMA retractable undercarriages<br />

for large sail-planes is a logical development of the<br />

proven undercarriages which we have been producing<br />

since 1988. The retractable undercarriages are designed<br />

modularly and thus can be adapted perfectly to different<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. The undercarriages can be installed either<br />

firmly between two fuselage bulkheads or spring-loaded.<br />

If they are used together with FEMA solid tires, these<br />

retractable undercarriages withstand even extreme<br />

strains. The inflexible mounting between two bulkheads<br />

of the fuselage is perfect for standard models. It is<br />

advisable to use spring-loaded carriages for really soft<br />

touch-downs. The gas pressure spring makes the best<br />

Wheel cover from glass fibre reinforced plastics.<br />

The wheel cover is an ideal splash guard and protects<br />

the inside of the fuselage against spraying water<br />

and dirt during take-off and landing. You just have to slide<br />

the wheel cover between the rocker arms of the retractable<br />

undercarriage and attach it with silic<strong>on</strong>e adhesive.<br />

The wheel cover is retrofittable for all FEMA undercarriages,<br />

that have been previously delivered.<br />

possible damping even <strong>on</strong> the roughest runways. The<br />

damping can be adjusted to the weight of the model<br />

by three damping variati<strong>on</strong>s all of them available for<br />

immediate delivery. The required springiness of the gas<br />

pressure spring can be calculated as follows:<br />

Springiness (N)=model weight in kg x 40 (1kg~t10N)<br />

Gas pressure springs are available with a springiness of<br />

200N, 300N, 400N. Models of more than 10kg require<br />

the attachment of 2 springs, more than 20kg require the<br />

attachment of three springs.<br />

We have made the mounting of the springloaded<br />

versi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>siderably easier and also made room for<br />

the attachment of the moulded seat.<br />

The additi<strong>on</strong>al kit for spring-loaded mounting includes<br />

two stable aluminium angles with borings for the<br />

mounting. They are attached to the fuselage bulkhead<br />

with the same screws as the retractable undercarriage.<br />

This makes it possible to prepare the fuselage bulkhead<br />

as shown in the illustrati<strong>on</strong> and you obtain enough room<br />

for building in the moulded seat.<br />

For the safety of your model, we recommend the<br />

attachment of a wheel brake independently of whether<br />

the undercarriage is attached firmly or spring-loaded.<br />

The wheel brake is operated by a servo and it can be<br />

applied extremely sensible though its high brake power.<br />

If the retractable undercarriage is attached firmly, the<br />

brake-servo can be mounted <strong>on</strong> the fr<strong>on</strong>t fasteningbulkhead<br />

or directly <strong>on</strong> the chassis of the undercarriage.


Retractable undercarriages<br />

If it is attached spring-loaded, the brake-servo has to be<br />

attached to the chassis of the undercarriage in order to<br />

ensure the safely functi<strong>on</strong>ing of the wheel brake when the<br />

retractable undercarriage is spring deflected. If the brakeservo<br />

is attached to the chassis of the undercarriage,<br />

an additi<strong>on</strong>al reversing lever (stock number 9890/22) is<br />

necessary.<br />

The retractable undercarriages have the following<br />

outstanding features:<br />

● Reliable functi<strong>on</strong>s - Bolt mechanisms <strong>on</strong> both final positi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

● Highly efficient wheel brake - safety for model and operator.<br />

● Spring-loaded installati<strong>on</strong> - for really soft touch-downs.<br />

● Robust attachment in the fuselage - between two<br />

plywood bulkheads.<br />

● Installati<strong>on</strong> height in the fuselage is relatively variable .<br />

● Installati<strong>on</strong> of 1 to 4 servos is easily possible<br />

in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with the servo holder (landing gear rudder,<br />

vertical rudder and elevator rudder)<br />
