COURSE CONTENT
Courses can be adjusted to fit with group’s requirements. The table below shows possible activities for a
residential fieldtrip. Please note some activities first/last day may be restricted by time of arrival and departure.

Titanic Quarter

Through a visit to the Titanic Quarter and to
Titanic Belfast, students will gain an
appreciation for the cultural, economic and
historical importance of the Titanic’s legacy to
Belfast. By carrying out fieldwork, students will
also be able to understand the factors that
have lead to the regeneration and rebranding
of the area, the building works that have taken
place as a result, and how the area stands to
benefit from further redevelopment and
reimaging.

After a short classroom based introduction
session, students will travel to various villages
in the local area to find out how rural
communities are affected by aspects such as
service provision, transport links and
employment opportunities, and how this
impacts different sectors of society. Students
will also assess the impact of the area’s Global
Geopark status on communities, and evaluate
the benefits this brings.
During this session, students will visit locations
around the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark
(status awarded in 2001) to investigate the
impact of this on the area. Students will gather
evidence to look critically at how this status has
been used to rebrand the area and attract
tourists, and will assess the work of the
Fermanagh Lakelands Tourist Board (set up in
1999).
This day will include a visit to Marble Arch
Caves (when possible).
Students will undertake a study of Enniskillen
and the surrounding area to establish the risk
and likely impact of flooding. By using both
primary fieldwork approaches and secondary
data, students will assess the ways in which
Enniskillen is prepared to prevent flooding and
cope with the aftermath of such an event.
