Pam Ymuno â'r Chweched Dosbarth? 

Mae'r mwyafrif o bobl ifainc bellach yn 

penderfynu parhau â'u haddysg ar ôl un ar 

bymtheg mlwydd oed. Fe welant ei bod hi'n dod 

yn fwyfwy manteisiol i ennill cymwysterau 

pellach- Lefelau A/AS/BTEC/NVQ/Bagloriaeth 

Cymru a all yn eu tro arwain at raddau 

prifysgol. 

Erbyn hyn, fe welwn fod y mwyafrif o 

ddisgyblion Blwyddyn 11 yn penderfynu dod yn 

ôl i'r Chweched Dosbarth yn yr ysgol hon. Beth 

yw manteision hynny? 

• Mae gan yr ysgol enw da iawn am ragoriaeth 

ei chanlyniadau arholiadau. Llwydda’r mwyafrif 

llethol o’n myfyrwyr i ennill lle mewn 

prifysgolion neu mewn sefydliadau Addysg 

Uwch neu ym myd gwaith. 

• Mae angen llawer o gefnogaeth a chyngor 

personol ar bob myfyriwr i lwyddo yn yr ysgol. 

Yn y Chweched Dosbarth, fel yng ngweddill yr 

ysgol, rydym yn pwysleisio yr angen i gymryd 

diddordeb byw yn ein myfyrwyr, i’w cefnogi a’u 

cynghori. Mae hyn yn fanteisiol iawn os yw'r 

myfyriwr i lwyddo yn y pen draw. 

• Byddwn yn rhoi gwybodaeth gyson i'r 

myfyrwyr a'u rhieni ynglŷn â'u cynnydd yn eu 

cyrsiau. 

• Pwysleisiwn fel ysgol bwysigrwydd 

datblygiad llawn yr unigolyn. Mae hynny'n 

cwmpasu nid yn unig lwyddiant academaidd 

ond hefyd lwyddiant cymdeithasol. O gofio am 

brysurdeb a gorchestion yr ysgol yn 

gymdeithasol, yn ddiwylliannol, ac am ei 

llwyddiannau ar y meysydd chwarae, does dim 

rhyfedd fod gan yr ysgol gryn dipyn i'w gynnig i 

ddarpar fyfyrwyr y Chweched Dosbarth. 

Why Join the Sixth Form? 

By today, the majority of young people are 

choosing to continue with their education 

after the age of sixteen. They can see that 

there are increasing advantages in gaining 

further qualifications- A Levels/AS/BTEC/ 

NVQ/Welsh Baccalaureate that can lead 

eventually to university degrees. 

Most of the pupils in Year 11 decide to return 

to the Sixth Form in this school. What are 

the advantages ? 

• The school has a very good reputation for 

the excellence of its examination results. The 

vast majority of all students gain places at 

unversities or at institutes of Higher 

Education or in the world of work. 

• Personal support and advice is essential 

for the welfare of all students. In the Sixth 

Form, as in the rest of the school, we 

emphasise the need to take an active 

interest in the students, and to provide them 

with continuous support and advice. 

• We provide the students and their parents 

with constant feedback regarding their 

progress in their chosen studies. 

• As a school. strong emphasis is placed on 

the full development of the individual. This 

embraces not only academic sucess, but also 

the social progress of each individudal. The 

school is well known for the success of its 

social, cultural and sporting life; it is hardly 

surprising, therefore, that students at this 

school have much to gain from returning to 

the Sixth Form.

What Courses to Take? 

The school offers a wide range of courses- AS, A 

Level. BTEC, NVQ and Welsh Bacccalaureate 

courses. 

Lefel A: Rhennir y cyrsiau lefel A yn ddwy: 

Yn ystod y flwyddyn gyntaf (Bl.12), mae 

myfyrwyr yn dilyn cwrs- Uwch Gyfrannol neu 

UG, a gaiff ei arholi'n allanol ar ddiwedd y 

flwyddyn. Yn ystod yr ail flwyddyn, (Bl 13) aiff 

myfyrwyr ymlaen i arbenigo, a chwblhau'r cwrs 

lefel A llawn gydag arholiadau ar eu cyfer ar 

ddiwedd yr ail flwyddyn. 

A Level : A levels are divided into two parts: 

During the first year, (Year 12) students follow 

Additional Subsidiary or AS courses which are 

examined externally at the end of the year. 

During the second year (Year 13), students go 

on to specialise, completing the full A level 

course with examinations at the end of the 

second year.

Bydd y disgyblion hefyd yn dilyn cwrs

sgiliau allweddol mewn cyfathrebu, 

rhifedd, technoleg gwybodaeth, yn ogystal 

â chymwyseddau personol megis datrys 

problemau, gweithio gydag eraill a gwella 

eich perfformiad eich hun. 

The Welsh Baccalaureate 

The students also follow the Welsh 

Baccalaureate. Credit is also accorded to the 

key skills of communication, numeracy and 

information technology, as well as for 

personal competencies such as problem 

solving, working with others and improving 

your own performance 

BTEC Lefel 2(Diploma Cyntaf)

Cynigir y cyrsiau galwedigaethol hyn ar ddwy 

lefel a chanolbwyntir ar agweddau ymarferol a 

real yn ogystal â theori. Asesir y ddau gwrs

baratoi disgyblion un ai ar gyfer mynediad I 

fyd gwaith neu ddilyniant i addysg uwch 

BTEC Level 2(First Diploma) 

Level 3 (National Award) 

These vocational courses are available at two 

levels and provide students with a more 

practical, approach to learning, alongside a key, 

theoretical background. Both courses are 100% 

assignment based and prepare students equally 

for direct entry into employment or progression 

to higher education. 

NVQ 2 

Yn ystod blwyddyn 12 mae myfyrwyr yn treulio 

1 diwrnod yr wythnos yn astudio yn Ysgol 

Gyfun Cwm Rhymni a phedwar diwrnod yn 

derbyn hyfforddiant a phrofiad mewn ysgol 

gynradd Gymraeg leol. Ar ddiwedd y flwyddyn 

mae rhai myfyrwyr yn dewis cynnig am swyddi 

fel cynorthwy-wyr dysgu tra bo eraill yn 

penderfynua aros mlaen ar gyfer y cymhwyster 

NVQ Lefel 3 ym mlwyddyn 13 

NVQ2 

During year 12 students spend 1 day a week 

studying at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni and 4 days 

training and gaining experience at a local Welsh 

primary school. At the end of the year some 

students decide to apply for posts as teaching 

assistants while others decide to stay on for the 

NVQ level 3 qualification in Year 13.

Student Guidelines 

As senior students at the school Sixth Formers are 

given greater freedom and privileges than the 

younger pupils and are also be expected to assume 

certain responsibilities: 

The Promotion of the School’s Values 

The values of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni are embodied 

in the Welsh medium character of the school - 

the only Welsh medium secondary school in Caerphilly 

County Borough. All pupils are encouraged 

strongly to communicate with each other in Welsh, 

and to enjoy extra curricular events that celebrate 

the use of the language. They are also encouraged 

to lead Welsh language activities 

The Sixth Form, can play a vital part in this respect. 

Regular contact with younger pupils in informal 

situations has an important part to play in the promotion 

of the meaningful use of Welsh at school. It 

is extremely important that Sixth form students 

develop contact with younger pupils, engaging them 

in conversation and offering general support and encouragement. 

At hynny, mae cymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau 

allgyrsiol yn ddull pellach o gynnal cysylltiadau â’r 

disgyblion iau. Sefydlwyd cangen o'r Urdd yn yr 

adeiladau presennol gyda swyddogion llawn amser 

yn gweithio o'r ysgol. Mae'r rhan hon o fywyd yr ysgol 

yn eithriadol bwysig oherwydd ei fod yn greiddiol 

i ethos ysgol Gymraeg. Drwy gymryd rhan yn y 

gweithgareddau hyn gall y myfyrwyr aeddfedu a chyfoethogi 

eu datblygiad personol. 

In addition, participation in extra curricular activities 

is a further means of liaising with the younger pupils. 

These are held during the lunch hour and at 

the end of the school day. A branch of Urdd Gobath 

Cymru has been set up in the school, and full time 

officer sof the Urdd are based at the school. By taking 

part in these activities, students will gain added 

maturity and personal enrichment.

astudio personol. Disgwylir presenoldeb uchel a

i athrawon hŷn yr ysgol am unrhyw gamymddwyn. 

Students will be expected to maintain an appropriate 

balance between formal lessons and personal study 

sessions. Regular attendance and punctuality both 

at school and in lessons are required of all students. 

At specific times during the day they will be expected 

to undertake particular duties especially during the 

lunch break. They may also supervise behaviour on 

the buses, and report any incidents that cause concern 

to senior members of staff.

What is the Welsh Baccalaureate? 

The Welsh Baccalaureate is an exciting qualification for students in Wales that 

adds a valuable new dimension to the subjects and courses already available for 

students. It combines personal development skills with existing qualifications like 

A levels and NVQs. It gives broader experiences than traditional learning 

programmes, to suit the diverse needs of young people. 

The ‘Bac’ is taught through a

ffolio o waith cwrs ydy'r cwrs Lefel A Saesneg. Seilir yr asesiad ar

Uwch Gyfrannol Blwyddyn 12 

Arholiad dwy awr a hanner, gwerth 60% o'u gradd UG yw hwn (neu 30% o'r radd Lefel

Adran A: Darllen Beirniadol o Farddoniaeth 

Bydd disgyblion yn ymateb i gwestiwn ar fardd a oedd yn ysgrifennu cyn 1800 yn drylwyr, a 

hefyd yn ymateb i farddoniaeth o’r un cyfnod nad ydynt wedi astudio. 

Adran B: Shakespeare a Drama Berthnasol 

Astudir un ddrama gan Shakespeare a hefyd un ddrama o'r un thema gan awdur gwahanol, 

a fydd yn darparu cyd-destun hanesyddol a diwylliannol. 

Gwaith Cwrs 

Disgwylir i ddisgyblion gwblhau un darn o waith estynedig er mwyn sicrhau 20% o'u gradd 

Lefel A Seilir y gwaith hwn ar wybodaeth y disgybl o dri thestun gwahanol, cymysgedd o farddoniaeth 

a rhyddiaith.

English Literature 

Advanced Subsidiary and A Level 

Summary of the course 

This is a two-year course, preparing pupils for two final exams and two 

Coursework folios. Assessment will be based on the outcome of both course 

work pieces and examination performance. 

Advanced Subsidiary; Year 12 

Examination 

Pupils prepare for a 2½ hour examination in the summer, which is worth 60% of their AS grade 

(or 30% of the overall A Level grade). Pupils are required to answer one question from Section 

A and one question from Section B. Candidates are permitted to take copies of the texts into 

this examination. 

Section A: Poetry post-1900. 

Pupils will study one poet in depth, and a second poet to provide cultural and historical context. 

Section B: Drama post-1900 

Pupils will study one drama, written since 1900. 

Coursework 

A coursework folio comprising three pieces of written work must be submitted in order to account 

for 40% of the AS grade (or 20% of the overall A Level grade). 

Section A: Prose study 1800-1945. 

Pupils will produce one piece of extended writing, discussing one principal and one secondary 

author from this period. 

Section B: Creative Writing 

One piece of extended creative writing in response to pupils' independent wider reading 

of prose. In addition, a complementary piece will allow pupils' to comment on their choice of 

genre, style and language. 

A Level: Year 13 

Examination 

Pupils will sit a 2½ hour examination, worth 30% of their overall A Level grade. Pupils are 

required to answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B. 

Section A Critical reading of Poetry. 

Pupils will study one pre-1800 poet in depth, and also respond to a related but unseen 

poem. 

Section B: Shakespeare and Related Drama 

Pupils will study one Shakespeare play and an accompanying text by a different playwright, 

which will provide cultural and historical context. 

Coursework 

A coursework folio comprising one extended piece of writing must be submitted in order to account 

for 20% of the overall A Level grade. This extended essay will be based on the candidate's 

study of three texts from different genres and periods.

HISTORY AS/A2 

History is a subject that by its nature requires candidates to consider 

individual, moral, ethical, social, cultural and contemporary issues. During 

the two year study period, pupils will be required to examine the actions of 

people in past societies, and evaluate a range of perspectives and reactions 

to these actions by both contemporaries and historians. 

The course has been structured to give pupils the opportunity to research 

a period study of 100 years, and a shorter indepth study. A range of topics under these 

general headings will be studied at AS and A2 level:

Politics is the study of how we are governed. It concerns 

the ways in which decisions are made about government, 

state and public affairs. It is about where power 

lies or where it should lie. It is a challenging and exciting

PSYCHOLOGY AS/A2 

Psychology is an exciting and fascinating field of 

study which attempts to discover how the human 

mind works. It is a young science which is rapidly 

growing in popularity, as it is used to explain 

people's behaviour and to treat a wide variety of 

phobias and anxieties. Psychology pushes us towards 

a greater self-knowledge by making us more aware 

of our own actions and how we relate to others. 

Psychology examines a broad range of real-life issues such as stress, health, social 

interaction and the environment to name a few. Some of the questions discussed during 

the course are: 

• Can social pressure make people act 'out of character'? 

• Are behavioural differences between men and women learnt or inborn? 

• How can memory be improved? 

• Why do we dream? 

• What can we learn about people from studying the behaviour of animals?

department has the modern equipment that the 

course necessitates. The emphasis is placed on 

the development and experience of the individual

department consists of eight periods a

understanding but, in general students will 

be studying mostly new topics and a much

of mathematical knowledge. Ideally pupils

Computers are now widely used in all

students' horizons beyond the school 

environment.

The Edexcel specification is followed on this 

course. The Certificate takes one year to 

complete and is equivalent to one AS level. The

This course is vocational in context and focuses on 

the use of science in scientific organisations and in 

organisations using science. The BTEC course can 

lead to a successful career in several fields 

including; civil engineering; electrical engineering; 

mechanical engineering; and a number of modern 

apprenticeships that rely on individuals with good 

mathematical, scientific and information 

technology skills. In addition, the course can lead 

to studying science to a higher level at university. 

The course provides a Pass, Merit and Distinction 

grade which is assessed internally and is then 

verified. There are no exams to be marked 

externally. All of the work is portfolio based. 

Pupils accepted on the course will have succeeded 

in gaining a C or above in the separate sciences, a 

C or above in the GCSE Applied Science course or 

a Merit in the BTEC level 2 course. Furthermore, 

due to the mathematical nature of the course, it is 

expected that pupils will have received a B grade, 

or higher, at GCSE level.

which offers a wide range of experiences

surface print and colour, theatrical 

costumes, woven and knitted structures.

The BTEC Firsts in Business have been designed to develop the knowledge and 

understanding that is required in the business world. Students will concentrate 

on key areas, including interpersonal skills and customer service. Throughout 

the course, students have the opportunity to develop skills to support them as 

they build relationships with a wide variety of customers. 

Business employers value employees who are able to communicate effectively 

both verbally and using electronic communication methods. The BTEC Firsts in 

Business provide opportunities for learners to develop their communication skills

This qualification is designed to appeal to students interested in a career in 

business or who wish to continue their studies in the subject. The four core 

units in the Subsidiary Diploma give learners an introduction to and an 

understanding of business environment, management of resources, marketing 

and communication: all fundamental to the success of business organisations. 

Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse 

activities including assignment and project work, case studies, workplace 

assessment, role play and oral presentations. Students are encouraged to 

carry out research and are expected to work independently and as part of a

DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SERVICES: LEVEL 2

The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services are designed to equip learners with the knowledge, 

understanding and skills required for success when moving towards a career in the 

uniformed and non-uniformed services, for example, Police, Emergency Fire Services, Security, 

Prison Services or the Armed Services. Learners will through the different specialist 

units offered, find out about the different Public Services and how they work individually 

and interact with each other – inter-agency working. 

They will also have the opportunity to discover the levels of fitness required for each of the 

uniformed services and how to improve their health and fitness for entry in to these services. 

New units such as Public Service Research and Volunteering in Public Services have 

been added in response to feedback from centres. The range of optional units will support 

learners in the direction they wish to take in their careers. Some might want to progress 

further in education on to the BTEC Nationals in Public Services; others might want to apply 

for entry into one of the Public Services. The qualification will give them the knowledge 

needed to make an informed choice when they take their next step.

The BTEC Firsts in Health and Social Care have been developed to develop

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE: LEVEL 3 

The BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care provide much of the underpinning 

knowledge for the National Occupational Standards in Health and Social Care/Health 

and consequently act as a robust introduction to both sectors. They prepare learners 

for employment in the sectors or for higher education. They are also mapped to the 

NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework, which was developed as part of the Agenda 

for Change process for updating the way NHS staff roles are defined and developed. 

The specification lends itself to creative delivery, using learners’ work experience as 

the focal point and enabling learning to be as active, practical and work-related as 

possible. Alongside this, it provides robust opportunities for learners to gain 

knowledge and understanding of a wide range of subject areas relating to health and

Certain skills in the Hospitaility industry are in great demand, including customer 

service skills, culinary skills and employability or ‘soft’ skills. This BTEC 

qualification seeks to address these areas and have been structured to 

encourage the acquisition and development of these skills. 

Thos course gives students a vocational taster of hospitality. It acts as an introduction 

to the hospitality industry as a whole, covering core elements necessary
