have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average if serving in an<br />

elected position, and a 2.0 cumulative grade point average<br />

as an ASCR Senate board member you are eligible to<br />

receive priority registration, a fifty dollar monthly stipend,<br />

and may be required to participate and travel to leadership<br />

CalWORKS - Special Program to<br />

Support and Encourage Academic Success<br />

CalWORKs This state-funded program is designed to<br />

provide support services to students receiving cash aid<br />

(AFDC) from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Social Services. Services<br />

include child care assistance and advocacy.<br />

Career Development and Student<br />

Employment Center [Eureka Campus]<br />

The Career Development and Student Employment Center<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Eureka campus, in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> Job Market,<br />

provides assistance to students and community members<br />

by making available a variety <strong>of</strong> career search, planning<br />

and development materials, services, and workshops. It<br />

also serves as <strong>the</strong> campus hub for student employment.<br />

Career services include career interest inventories, resume<br />

writing assistance, career planning course (GUID-8), and<br />

job search skills. Student employment services include listings/referrals<br />

for local and on-campus job openings, federal<br />

work-study assistance, internships, job searches and on-line<br />

job listings.<br />

Similar career services are available at <strong>the</strong> Mendocino Coast<br />

and Del Norte Education Centers. Contact <strong>the</strong> Financial<br />

Aid Offices at those locations for more information and<br />

assistance.<br />

Child Development Center [Eureka Campus]<br />

On-campus child care is available at <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong><br />

(Eureka Campus) Child Development Center for toddler<br />

and preschool aged children. The CDC provides a playbased,<br />

developmentally appropriate curriculum for<br />

children.<br />

Free child care is available for children from income<br />

eligible families. To receive <strong>the</strong>se services <strong>the</strong> family must<br />

demonstrate a need for child care.<br />

When space is available, fee-paying parents may enroll<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir children at <strong>the</strong> CDC. Parents pay a daily rate based<br />

on <strong>the</strong> hours <strong>of</strong> care required and <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> child. CR<br />

students, staff, and faculty have priority for <strong>the</strong>se openings.<br />

The CDC is open for services all instructional days.<br />

Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are served to all<br />

children at no cost. Drop-in child care is not available.<br />

Parents are invited to visit <strong>the</strong> CDC with <strong>the</strong>ir child. Registration<br />

information is available at <strong>the</strong> Child Development<br />

Center, located on <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> campus, by <strong>the</strong> Field<br />

CDC Information<br />

The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> Child Development Center<br />

simultaneously provides a high-quality laboratory setting<br />

for early childhood education students and an enriching<br />

child care and development services for <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong><br />

CR’s students, staff and faculty.<br />

Philosophy<br />

At <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> Child Development Center<br />

we believe children are capable and competent. We are<br />

committed to children’s potential and <strong>the</strong>ir enjoyment <strong>of</strong><br />

life. The CDC develops children’s disposition for curiosity,<br />

persistence, resourcefulness, problem solving and creativity.<br />

We are a community <strong>of</strong> learners where children and<br />

adults explore <strong>the</strong>ir world toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The Child Development Center is an exciting state-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>the</strong>art<br />

facility and is a permanent site for many specialized<br />

programs as well as serving our students’ child care needs.<br />

The facility meets all <strong>the</strong> Guidelines <strong>of</strong> Title 22 Title 5; and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Americans with Disabilities Act <strong>of</strong> 1990. The Center has<br />

several laboratory classrooms with observation areas, an inside<br />

covered multi-purpose room, a complete food service<br />

facility, and outdoor play areas for each age group.<br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers an Associate <strong>of</strong> Science<br />

Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE). For a complete<br />

Staffing<br />

The teachers at <strong>the</strong> Child Development Center are early<br />

childhood education pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with education, training<br />

and experience in child development.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> permanent staff, students from <strong>the</strong><br />

Early Childhood Education program work in <strong>the</strong> CDC to<br />

master <strong>the</strong> skills necessary to work effectively with young<br />

children.<br />

Clubs and Organizations<br />

Social, educational, honorary, service, and special<br />

interest clubs are organized by students at each campus<br />

to contribute to <strong>the</strong> overall life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college. These<br />

organizations also provide a variety <strong>of</strong> opportunities for<br />

social interaction and <strong>the</strong> exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas among CR<br />

students. Students should call <strong>the</strong> ASCR <strong>of</strong>fices for more<br />

information and a list <strong>of</strong> clubs that are active at each<br />

Cooperative Education<br />

Cooperative Education courses are designed to<br />

complement <strong>the</strong> student’s academic training with realistic<br />

on-<strong>the</strong>-job experiences. The courses emphasize increasing<br />

occupational skills, acquiring desirable work habits,<br />

developing healthy work attitudes, and broadening <strong>the</strong><br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> working conditions.<br />
