Distance Education Classes<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers online courses in a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> subjects to help you achieve your educational goals.<br />
Distance education is designed for students who want to<br />
take a <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong>’ course, but for a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
reasons choose or prefer not to take <strong>the</strong> course on campus.<br />
Distance education provides college access to students<br />
with schedule conflicts, full-time jobs, family obligations,<br />
disabilities or geographic barriers. Distance education classes<br />
are not dependent on a physical location or specific times.<br />
Interactive video courses are broadcast live from our<br />
Eureka campus studio to distant sites such as <strong>the</strong><br />
Mendocino Coast and Del Norte instructional sites. We also<br />
provide some classes via television broadcast on KEET-4<br />
with interaction taking place via computer or email.<br />
Online courses are available anywhere to students who<br />
have a computer and internet. Online courses follow <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong>’s semester schedule. In addition, <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong><br />
same course objectives, curriculum, and <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> same<br />
class syllabus as <strong>the</strong> classroom sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course. The<br />
difference is <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> course delivery. For most online<br />
sections, learning is primarily through instructor-facilitated<br />
reading, writing, and class participation. Most or all assignments<br />
and exams are web-based. To succeed you need to<br />
have:<br />
(1) <strong>the</strong> ability to work independently with self-discipline,<br />
motivation, and good organizational skills,<br />
(2) college-level reading and writing skills,<br />
(3) access to a computer connected to <strong>the</strong> internet (preferably<br />
broadband),<br />
(4) <strong>the</strong> basic skills to access and navigate websites, send<br />
and receive email, and send email attachments, and<br />
(5) <strong>the</strong> ability to read carefully and follow written instruction.<br />

EOPS/CARE<br />
Extended Opportunity Programs and Services<br />
(EOPS) & Cooperative Agencies Resources for<br />
Education (CARE)<br />
The EOPS and CARE programs are state funded services<br />
intended to assist eligible students in <strong>the</strong> achievement <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir educational goals.<br />
EOPS services include <strong>the</strong> following:<br />
• Orientation. Special EOPS orientations are provided<br />
each semester to acquaint students with EOPS services<br />
and eligibility, as well as an opportunity to meet faculty<br />
and staff.<br />
• Priority Registration. This service allows EOPS<br />
students to register early for classes.<br />
• EOPS Financial Assistance. Students who qualify may<br />
receive assistance with <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> books. EOPS<br />
students may also qualify for fee waivers, GED testing,<br />
and some university application fees.<br />
To receive EOPS services, students must complete an<br />
EOPS Application. Students will also be required to file a<br />
FAFSA (federal form) and BOG (Board <strong>of</strong> Governors) fee<br />
waiver.<br />
CARE services provides assistance to single head <strong>of</strong><br />
household parent attending college full-time and who<br />
are receiving CalWORKs or Tribal TANF Cash Aid for<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves or <strong>the</strong>ir children. In addition to <strong>the</strong> EOPS<br />
services listed above, CARE students may also receive<br />
financial assistance for child care and o<strong>the</strong>r educational<br />
expenses.<br />
Eligibility is determined based on <strong>the</strong> information<br />
submitted on <strong>the</strong> application, <strong>the</strong> BOG fee waiver and<br />
federal financial aid form. For more information, please<br />
stop by <strong>the</strong> EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs Office, located in <strong>the</strong><br />
Administration Building at <strong>the</strong> Eureka Campus or at <strong>the</strong><br />
Financial Aid Office at <strong>the</strong> Del Norte or Mendocino Coast<br />
Education Centers.<br />
General Education Development (GED)<br />
GED testing is available through <strong>the</strong> Academic Support<br />
Center. GED test preparation classes are <strong>of</strong>fered through<br />
local Adult Education Centers and <strong>the</strong> Private Industry<br />
Council (PIC).<br />
High School and Community Outreach<br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> [Eureka Campus]<br />
The Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> Early <strong>College</strong> High School<br />
(AR), located on <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> campus, is<br />
partnered with <strong>the</strong> college to create a coherent unit, with<br />
high school and college-level work blended into a single<br />
academic program. AR students have a unique opportunity<br />
to earn a high school diploma and receive transferable<br />
college credits in four to five years which can lead to an<br />
AA/AS degree or certificate at <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> or<br />
a degree at a four-year institution.<br />
To help students be successful in a college learning<br />
environment, we establish high, attainable expectations,<br />
develop a strong sense <strong>of</strong> community, instill personal<br />
responsibility, and provide excellent teaching within a<br />
challenging core curriculum. Given our standards for performance,<br />
students must be committed to a rigorous and<br />
accelerated academic schedule, work collaboratively, make<br />
presentations, and plan and execute projects. We expect<br />
our students to struggle intellectually, but not be daunted<br />
by <strong>the</strong> challenge.<br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Redwoods</strong> provides all tuition and textbooks<br />
at no charge, a significant savings to families and individuals,<br />
while students pursue a college degree. Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Redwoods</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers opportunities for academic achievement<br />
that are unique from any o<strong>the</strong>r school in our area.<br />

California Student Opportunity and Access<br />
Program (CalSOAP)<br />
Established in 1995, <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northcoast<br />
CalSOAP Consortium is to increase <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> local<br />
students who attend college after high school. The intersegmental<br />
Consortium is made up <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Redwoods</strong>, Humboldt State University, local schools and<br />
community organizations. By combining resources, <strong>the</strong><br />
Consortium coordinates local college outreach efforts<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> CR service area.<br />
