International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience Annual Conference Report A total of 269 participants descended on Bulgaria, Institute of Engineering Education the small coastal town of Marsascala, Malta Taiwan and Manipal Institute of Technology, in the middle of January 2006 to attend the India. Annual IAESTE A.s.b.l. Conference, the largest of its kind in recent years. Seventy six countries were represented at the week long Conference which was held in the Jerma Mr Pace Balzan concluded the proceedings by inviting a local brass band to entertain the delegates. Palace Hotel. introduced the Conference Honorary President, the Hon. Censu Galea, Minister for Competitiveness and Communication in Malta. The Minister explained how valuable IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 The Opening Ceremony took place in the Conference Hotel on Saturday 21 January 2006. Mr Mark Pace Balzan who acted as Master of Ceremonies welcomed everyone to the Annual Conference and invited the President of the Association, Mr Lucien Seywert to address the delegates. The President congratulated the Members on the formation of IAESTE A.s.b.l. and IAESTE was given the interdependent world in which we live in today and that the networking service provided by IAESTE is particularly important as it offers all students the possibility to become more familiar with different regional realities around the world through fi rst hand contact. He wished everyone an enjoyable stay in Malta and a successful Conference. The General Secretary then gave her report on the events of 2005 and thanked IAESTE Malta for all the preparations they had made to host the week long Conference. She welcomed the Vice President for Education from FISITA, Professor Matti Juhala and introduced delegates from the new Cooperating Institutions who were attending the Conference for the fi rst time. Uni-Group, During the Conference a total of 7412 offers were exchanged among the Full and Associate Members and Co-operating Institutions with several exchanging with over 50 different countries. Mentoring Sessions were arranged for all new participants as well as training sessions on our IntraWeb organised by members of the IDT (Internet Development Team). Mr Kim Jensen, IDT Co-ordinator gave his report on the work of IDT and informed the delegates that after 10
I A E S T E — A N N U A L R E V I E W 2 0 0 6 traditional housewarming party on arrival enabling participants the chance to renew acquaintances and meet newcomers attending the Conference for the fi rst time. eight years he would be standing down as Co-ordinator of the group. Mr Csaba Stoia will now take charge of IDT. The FoIN Co-ordinator (Friends of IAESTE Network), Peter Merrild reported on our Alumni Association which now has over 10,000 members and introduced his successor Miss Maryam Farahani as the new FoIN Co-ordinator for 2006. Mr Jeff Lange, the SID Co-ordinator (Seminar on IAESTE Development) presented his fi nal report to the Conference on the work which followed the 20th SID which was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia in April 2005 and handed over the reins to Mr Thomas Faltner as the new SID Co-ordinator, from IAESTE Austria. A comprehensive report was delivered by the IAESTE Ombudsman, Professor Bernardo Herold who was thanked for his dedication to his new post. As required by the IAESTE A.s.b.l. Statutes, new members were elected to the Board. Mr Goran Radnović, National Secretary IAESTE Serbia and Montenegro, replaced the outgoing Board member Mr Celso Garcia who resigned from the post of National Secretary IAESTE Brazil after many years of dedicated service to IAESTE at home and at international level. Mr Jan Konecny, IAESTE Czech Republic, took the place vacated by the outgoing Board member Mr Uroš Kovšca, IAESTE Slovenia who was thanked for his contribution to the Association during his term of offi ce. IAESTE Portugal will host the next Annual Conference in Lisbon from 20-25 January 2007 and the organisers gave a detailed presentation of their arrangements for this prestigious event in the IAESTE calendar. During the week long Conference IAESTE Malta provided delegates with some social events which included the On the Saturday evening, in spite of inclement weather, we experienced a Maltese evening in Razzett I-Antik, Qormi with traditional fare in a typical Maltese restaurant. The hotel provided the venue for the International Evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. On Wednesday afternoon all participants stopped work and enjoyed a few hours touring the capital Valletta which included a visit to the magnifi cent St John’s Co-Cathedral and an amazing view of the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The Farewell Gala dinner, held in the Mediterranean Conference Centre Valletta was attended by the Conference Honorary President and Mr Edward Ebejer from one of the sponsoring Companies, Maltese Enterprise and proved to be a fi tting venue for our fi nal event of the Conference. The GS introduced the two new Members of the Board, Mr Goran Radnović and Mr Jan Konency and presented the NS IAESTE Brazil with a token of her appreciation for Celso Garcia, outgoing Board member. She then invited Ms Ginny Arnold, NS IAESTE Canada to thank the former FoIN Coordinator Peter Merrild for his contribution to our Alumni network for the last two years. Mr Goran Radnović made a presentation to the NS and Chairman IAESTE Australia, Jacki O’Connor and Jeff Hill who have worked so hard to re establish IAESTE in Australia and whose presence at future Conferences will be sorely missed. Ms Christina Vakomies, NS IAESTE UK then had the unenviable task of bidding farewell to our long standing IDT Co-ordinator Kim Jensen whose work since 1998 has provided IAESTE with excellent IT services. The GS then announced that IAESTE UK was in top position for Administrators of the Year 2005 as judged by their exchange partners through the Questionnaire on Administrative Effi ciency and presented them with mementoes of their stay in Malta. The President, Mr Lucien Seywert thanked the sponsors for all their support and IAESTE Malta for their tireless efforts during the Conference. IAESTE Malta then presented the General Secretary and the President with gifts to mark the occasion. The Board, Members and Co-operating Institutions extend their special thanks to IAESTE Malta, in particular to Mr Robert Cordina, Mr Mark Pace Balzan, Ms Anne Marie Mayo, NS IAESTE Malta and Ms Albina Pace, Conference Secretary for all their patience and goodwill throughout the Conference. Thanks are also due to the many helpers for all their support and hard work during the week. We also thank the Conference Honorary President, the Hon. Censu Galea, Minister for Competitiveness and Communication for giving of his valuable time to attend the Opening ceremony and Farewell Dinner.
