Chinrest/Camera Support
Miles Research Eye Cameras
A variety of chinrests/camera support units are available for DSLR macro photography of the eye, and custom
solutions can also be provided.
Since these systems are all modular, it is not a problem to get the camera today and get the chinrest in the future.
Chinrest/camera supports are designed with a 12.0 inch backset (typical distance from DX camera image sensor and
subject when in 1:1 focus using a 105mm macro lens). The distance range has an adjustable offset of plus or minus 2
inches. The rack-and-pinion positioning stage has a total travel of 3 inches (plus or minus 1.5 inch). The vertical
positioning is such that at mid position, the camera mounting surface (top of the upper male quick-release plate that
mounts to the 12-20 (1/4”) camera threaded mounting socket) is 2.0 inches below the bottom of the forehead rest.
NOTE:
The chinrest is available by itself for $1300.
For a remote control trigger device and capture software, add $300 ($1500 total)
The chinrest has a quick-release and the camera can easily be snapped onto or off of the support. Use of the camera does not
require the chinrest - in other words, it is modular.
The deluxe version of the chinrest includes a remote
picture-taking button (red momentary push-button switch)
which is wired to a connector (red phono jack). The
supplied trigger/pointing device (modified mouse or
trackball) has an extra wire coming out with a red phono
plug that connects to the remote picture-taking button. The
mouse is plugged into a computer that runs camera
controlling software (such as Nikon Camera Control Pro)
and the mouse pointer is positioned over the “Shoot”
button on the remote control software. Then when the red
push button is pressed, a photo is captured. This option
enables remote image acquisition without moving hands
away from the positioning mechanism.
A cross-slide-base chinrest is also available.
Camera Body Choices
Nikon cameras are recommended. The current standard camera body for the 10 megapixel MC-2 is the Nikon D60.
Megapixel (MP) refers to how many picture elements (pixels) are in the camera's image sensor (and the resulting
image file); a 6MP camera (MC-1) makes images that are 3000x2000, that is 3000 wide by 2000 tall. Ten
megapixels (MC-2) is “normal” or typical resolution, as of 2008-9. For higher resolution, the 12 MP version of the
eye camera (MEC-4) is recommended (based on the D90). Higher resolutions and cameras built with non-Nikon
brand bodies are also available on special order.
