Chinrest/Camera Supports
New options for Chinrests and Iris Camera Supports from Miles Research are now available for DSLR macro
photography of the eye, and custom solutions can also be provided. These supports are designed from the
highest quality components and provide reliability and portability at a reasonable price.
Since these systems are all modular, it is a simple matter to get the camera today and get the chinrest in the
future, or to get a chinrest for any eye camera you may already have. Chinrest/camera supports are
designed with a 12.0 or 11.0 inch backset (typical distance from DX camera image sensor and subject when
in 1:1 focus using a 105mm or 85mm macro lens), but this can be adjusted. The distance range has an
adjustable offset of plus or minus 2 inches. The rack-and-pinion positioning stage has a total travel of 3
inches (plus or minus 1.5 inch). The vertical positioning is such that at mid position, the camera mounting
surface (top surface of the quick-release plate that mounts to the 1/4-20 (1/4”) camera threaded mounting
socket) is 2.5 inches below the bottom of the forehead rest (typically, 1.75” below lens axis).
Premium Professional Chinrest/Camera-Support (CRCS-FH-4)
Tabletop Fluid-Head Chinrest (CRCS-FH-4) - $1200
The CRCS-FH-4 is the newest model of premium chinrest - camera support.
Ideal for the busy professional clinic, this type of chinrest will facilitate efficient image acquisition. Live-View
for on-screen focusing (rather than peering through the viewfinder) is facilitated by the use of a chinrest.
This unit features a rugged and precision chinrest with chin height adjustment and eye occluder, mounted
on a sturdy bamboo hardwood platform (footprint is about 11”x14”) with non-slip, non-mar rubber feet,
solid oak camera support pillar, professional fluid head and a focusing stage for positioning the camera in
spherical coordinates. A sturdy quick-release is also included. The design positions the camera so the center
of gravity is typically directly over the camera support pillar for maximum stability. An optional calibration
bezel is available for the focusing stage. The two hardwood components are also available in white enamel.
This unit may be disassembled (tool-free) by the user into its three components for easier transport.
Compact Camera Chinrest Support (CCCS-1) - $750
A table-top tripod with adjustable-height chinrest and compact camera positioning device.
This portable table-top chinrest will work with any compact camera and is designed to give uniform iris
images with standard magnification and lighting. Working distance is adjustable from 0 to 5 inches.
A second style (CCCS-2, left) is available for cameras that have a
longer working distance. This design is intended for autofocus
macro cameras with a working distance in the range of 3.0 to 8.0
inches. This model is compatible with the Olympus 560UZ, Canon
PowerShot and several other autofocus macro cameras.
This design mounts the camera behind the forehead rest support
bar, so the working distance can go up to 8 inches or more, or
down to 3 inches. The CCCS-2 can also be operated in handheld
mode.
Chinrest/Compact Camera Support
A. Compact Camera (optional)
B. Chinrest
C. Forehead Rest
E. Linear Slide Rail
F. Height adjustment
G. Handle for hand-held use
H. Tripod for table-top use
CCCS-1 for standard compact cameras
CCCS-2 for larger automatic cameras
The camera is mounted on a linear slide rail to ensure both eyes are photographed with the same working
Model CCCS-1 is intended for compact cameras with short working distance, such as the Sony CyberShot
W300 or Nikon P6000.
Model CCCS-2 is intended for longer working distance, where the camera mounting point to subject
distance is more than 3”, and up to about 8 inches. In the CCCS-2 design, the camera is mounted behind
the forehead support. The Ambient Light is available for the CCCS-2.
Chincup height can be adjusted with ½” spacers. Vertical travel of camera mount is 40mm.
Miles Research – Chinrest/Camera Supports – CRCS-* 9
The camera support rail has an adjustable height to ensure the camera is centered on the visual axis
vertically. The linear slide rail allows the camera to be positioned on the visual axis laterally.
This chinrest features open sides, so that lid retraction can be performed without interference.
The chinrest comes with a compact tabletop tripod that can adjust from 7.5” to 9.5” (in terms of chinrest
height from the table); the standard desk or table height is 29”. The chinrest may be mounted on other
tripods or supports via the threaded ¼”x20-tpi mounting hole.
This camera support makes it very easy to take eye pictures, since the autofocus is helped out and can
work much more accurately by having the camera centered on the iris, and at the same distance for each
iris.
Miles Research – Chinrest/Camera Supports – CRCS-* 10
The camera support/chinrest combination features a
handgrip option for handheld use:
This mode is convenient for photographing the eyes of
small children or older people who are unable to reach the
table-top support.
The camera chinrest is available from Miles Research for
$750.00. A compact camera with case, spare battery, and
memory card can be added to this for an additional cost,
depending on which camera is selected.
Sample Images
Example of the iris images that are easily obtained with the Compact Camera Support/Chinrest. Top – original 12
megapixel images taken of the right and left iris; Bottom – portion of top images, cropped to iris. These pictures
were taken consecutively by the author of his own eyes, and no other “takes” were needed. The chinrest makes
the image acquisition very easy and reliable – consistently good results with only one shot per eye!
