WELCOME TO THE
It is with pleasure that we welcome you to the third
Tynemouth Food Festival organised by the Tynemouth
Business Forum. Last year’s event was again a huge
success thanks to the amazing support from all of you. This
year the festival has a new venue and this has enabled us
to make it even bigger and better (unbelievable but true!).
However, it also means that we are, unfortunately, having
to charge a small admission fee, but we do feel that with
the programme this year it will be fantastic value for
money. As well as the usual two days of great local food
and drink with even more stalls and street food vendors
than before; cookery demonstrations from locally renowned
chefs and chocolate tasting sessions with Davenport’s
Chocolate we have a host of live entertainment all coordinated
by our resident DJ Jordy from Metro Radio.
This year, as we are in the grounds of English Heritage's
historic Tynemouth Priory, the festival is all in one place. We
have 50 market stallholders selling a wide range of local
and regional artisan produce; a wide selection of street
food stalls selling food from around the world to tantalise
your taste buds; a food court marquee where you can
enjoy your choice of street food along with a selection of
drinks from Copperfields @ The Priory in association with
Cullercoats Brewery; an activities marquee where various
events will be taking place throughout the weekend,
including chocolate workshops, magician sessions, face
painting and a smoothie bike(see page 24); the cream
of the region’s culinary talent turning up the heat in a
state-of-the-art demo kitchen; a unique experience from
Cullercoats bike and kayak hire (see page 25) plus live
entertainment throughout the weekend. So much to see,
do and taste for all the family!
The Tynemouth Food Festival organisers have been touched
by the story of a North Tyneside youngster, 4 year old Luke
Collins, whose story you can find on page 6. The festival this
year will therefore be raising funds to support Luke and his
family through collecting donations and selling wristbands
from the Food Festival stand throughout the weekend. We
hope that you will all support us with this good cause and
that we are able to raise much needed funds for Luke’s
care.
None of this, however, would have been possible without
the generous support of our sponsors from the local
business community, in particular North Tyneside Council
and English Heritage and the enthusiastic involvement of
the exhibitors and the amazing support of the local chefs.
Particular mention must again be given to the steering
group who have worked tirelessly over the year to ensure
that this year’s festival is again a huge success. Finally, a
big thank you to all of you, for again joining us over the
weekend. Enjoy the sights, sounds, aromas and tastes of a
celebration of fine food, drink and culinary skills. We would
love to hear your views on this year’s event so please fill in
the comments book at the Tynemouth Food Festival stand
or leave your comments on our facebook page or twitter
@tynemoutfoodfest. We hope you enjoy yourselves and
look forward to seeing you
again next year.
Tynemouth Food Festival could
not have happened without the
generous help of our sponsors.
Luke’s Life Long
Labour
This year Tynemouth Food Festival is delighted to be raising money for
Luke’s Life Long Labour, a group raising money for Luke Collins a 4 year
old little boy from North Tyneside and his family. Money raised will be
spent to improve Luke’s quality of life; to ensure Luke has access to all
of the best aftercare, therapies and rehabilitation; to ensure Luke is
supported to develop fully making sure all the necessary resources
are made available to him at home; to support Luke to access any
groundbreaking, innovative treatments that may become available.
This may include treatment costs and associated expenses and to
support a fulfilling family life for Luke, his parents and his older brother.
On 15th July 2010, aged 7 months old, Luke was diagnosed with a
visual pathway glioma (a brain tumour on his optic nerve). What was
to follow was every parent’s nightmare. Luke has undergone several
different types of chemotherapy over the years; he has had dozens of
scans and has spent many, many months in hospital. Despite this the
tumour continued to grow and then the most devastating thing
happened - Luke lost his sight. He was very suddenly left with nothing,
not even light/dark perception.
Luke continued to receive a series of treatments including surgery to
insert a shunt in his brain to ensure the normal flow of brain fluids
which the tumour was blocking. However on the 4th February 2014
the family was given the distressing news that Luke’s tumour was now
too big for radiotherapy and the local hospital felt it was too risky to
operate. Without an operation Luke would not survive. The family
sought a second opinion from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool
and as risky as an operation would be, they were prepared to operate
on Luke.
In March 2014 Luke had an operation and the team at Alde Hey
Hospital were able to remove 20-30% of the tumour. The reduction in
the tumour will allow Luke to undergo a treatment in America called
Proton Beam Therapy.
Luke is a remarkable little boy with an amazing family. He has suffered
a lot during his short life so far but, incredibly, he keeps on smiling.
If you are able to help raise much needed funds please contact the
group via email lukeslifelonglabour@gmail.com or via the facebook
you can donate funds or read about Luke’s incredible battle for life.
Saturday 10th May
4pm:
John Carlton former BBC MasterChef
Finalist. Partner and head chef at the
The Staith House 57 Low Lights,
North Shields Fish Quay.
1pm:
Kirsty Cruickshank from For the Love of Fish and
Karen Wilkin from Swallow Fish in Seahouses
Kirsty’s mission is to make seafood everyday!
She runs cookery classes and bespoke
workshops/demonstrations with the aim of helping
you to learn how to prepare and cook seafood.
“It's brilliant fun and a lot easier than you think.”
Karen is passionate about fish, how to cook it, the
tradition and heritage that goes with the products
they smoke in other traditional 19th Century
smokehouses - all in all she says “I just want to get
out there and shout about how good fish is for you
and don't be afraid to try the vast array of fish and
shellfish out there … and it is so easy to cook too!”
When John Calton worked in a pub
overlooking the River Tyne in his
hometown of South Shields, he would
stand at the front door and dream of
one day owning his own place on the
fish quay just a short distance over the
water.
His life has taken many twists and turns
since then – including working with
some of Europe’s top Michelin-starred
chefs – but in November 2013 the
former MasterChef: The Professionals
finalist’s dream came true with the
opening of his first stand-alone eatery,
The Staith House, in partnership with
wife Kimberley and friend and former
work colleague James Laffan.
Based in what was the Dolphin pub
(The Staith House is the 206 year old
hostelries original name before being
rechristened in 1853), the historic pub is
the latest addition to North Shields Fish
Quay’s burgeoning high class food
outlets.
Specialising in “meat from the farm, fish
from the quay,” John says the food isn’t
“fanciful but not ordinary either. There is
quite a bit of inspiration that has come
from the brilliant food pubs in London;
it’s knowledgeable but not in your face.”
FatFriars
FatFriars street fodder represents the culinary journey
British cuisine has taken, from the Gardens of Baghdad,
the epicentre of creative gastronomy, through North
Africa and up into Europe and Britain over 1000 years.
Influenced by the merchants of the time, the market
stall finger food they ate along the way and the spices
they brought back, FatFriars is a melting pot of full-on
lewd food with zingy fried spicy fish, dribbling pulled
pork wraps, dirty burgers, vibrant veggie fodder and
unctuously sticky puddings. FatFriars is essentially
Blackfriars naughty little sibling offering made to order
wraps filled with mouth watering fillings – and with
everything homemade.
A chocolate adventure
around the world with
Davenport’s Chocolates
Connoisseur Chocolate Tastings - Saturday May 10th
12noon, 2pm and 3pm in the Chef Demonstrations Marquee
If you are a chocoholic you are in for
another sweet treat at this year’s
Tynemouth food festival as Davenport
Chocolates once again run their series
of ticket only chocolate tasting sessions
taking place in the Chef Demonstrations
Marquee on Saturday 10th May.
The exclusive 40 minute talks were very
popular last year so this year the sessions will
be available for more people – a maximum of
50 at each talk. Davenport’s Chocolates is run
by Jane Williams and specialises in handcrafted
chocolates made using traditional techniques
and the finest ingredients. The company, based
in North Shields, has built a richly deserved
reputation not just regionally but UK wide, for
creatively made chocolates. These range from
classic favourites in their Vintage Collection, to
innovatively fresh and vibrant new recipes
developed by Jane.
Chocolatier Charlie Pears-Wallace will take you
through a journey of tasting chocolate from around
the world, as you test your noses and tastebuds on
different cocoa beans and develop your pallete to
distinguish between them. You will also have the
chance to try chocolate pairings you may not have
experienced before as you push the boundaries of
flavour combinations (chocolate paired with the likes
of sundried tomatoes, fresh rosemary, black olives;
what will you think?) as well as taste some of
Davenport's well loved favourites, such as the
Cinnamon Toffee Apple or the Raspberry & Rose
Truffle.
Tickets cost £5 per person and are available to buy
from Tynemouth’s Deli Around the Corner or on the
day, subject to availability, from the Tynemouth Food
Festival stand..
Chocolates will be available to buy at the end of
each session and are also stocked by the Deli
Around the Corner.
The Award Winning Magic of
Graeme Shaw
Graeme’s magic show
is fun for the whole family!
He is not like most other “children`s entertainers” that
you may have seen in the past, because he will entertain
children of all ages as well as the adults, who normally
love the show as much, if not more than the kids!
Graeme started his magic career when he was just 9 years
old. Since that time he has won more magic awards than
any other North East magician. As well as being a business
partner of Magicbox, one of the biggest and longest running
magic retailers in the U.K, he is also the youngest person
to ever be elected president of the Newcastle upon Tyne
Magic Circle. With teaching dvd`s, routines and magical
inventions of his being used all around the world by other
magicians, Graeme is in a unique position to be original
and professional to the highest degree.
Day8 Productions bring the smash hit
West End and Tony award winning musical
AVENUE Q to the Tynemouth Food Festival
Dubbed "The Musical of the Decade" by
the Sunday Times newspaper, Avenue Q is
a hybrid of South Park and the Muppet Show
in an all singing, all dancing musical "fur-fest"
that is sure to have you crying with laughter
and roaring with joy!
Probably the funniest (and definitely the furriest!)
show you're likely ever to see, this "Sesame Street"
musical for the broad minded is a treat which you
will not want to miss!
If you have a good sense of humour, then
Avenue Q is right up your street!
