of this coveted new title will be<br />
crowned live at this year's two<br />
day NECTA Salon Culinaire event<br />
at Newcastle Civic Centre on<br />
May 8. Apart from the honour<br />
of being judged the top nonprofessional<br />
in the region the<br />
winner will also get to spend<br />
time working with awardwinning<br />
chef Michael Penaluna<br />
and his team at Jesmond Dene<br />
House, see their winning dishes<br />
on the restaurant menu and<br />
demonstrate one of their<br />
winning dishes to a live audience<br />
at Tynemouth <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>.<br />

Gareth has been cooking for as long as he can remember. His two earliest<br />
memories are the 1990 football World Cup and being caught by his mum in the<br />
kitchen with a pan on the stove cooking lemonade soup! Luckily, his skills are much<br />
sharper now!<br />
He is a self taught cook and has taken part in a number of cooking competitions.<br />
He was a winner of the 2012 EAT! NewcastleGateshead Trial Shift Competition and<br />
the 2011 Masterchef Live competition at the BBC Good <strong>Food</strong> show. He then went<br />
on to win a Masterchef ‘Champion of Champions’ event at the London Studios. In<br />
2010 he was a final regional contender on ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish. Gareth also<br />
worked ‘stages’ at Rockliffe Hall with Kenny Atkinson and at Blackfriars Restaurant<br />
in Newcastle with Troy Terrington now of Jesmond Dene House.<br />
Gareth now organises pop-up restaurant events and offers private dining services<br />
to individual clients as well as working on blog and food article writing, cookery<br />
classes, event and food festival management and a street food concept to be<br />
launched in <strong>2014</strong>.<br />

Former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy made his name at<br />
Newcastle’s Black Door, the award-winning restaurant on Clayton Street West<br />
he opened in 2003.<br />
This was followed by Brasserie Black Door which has now morphed into the<br />
acclaimed David Kennedy’s <strong>Food</strong> Social at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle,<br />
where he is executive chef. His name also appears above the door at the Bib<br />
Gourmand David Kennedy’s River Café on North Shields Fish Quay.<br />
In autumn he opened David Kennedy at Vallum in the Tyne Valley where he<br />
continues to be a vocal advocate of local and seasonal produce which he<br />
champions on his ever-changing menus.<br />
