Sunday 10th May 11am: Winner of the NECTA inaugural Cook of the Year competition. Open to non-professionals from across the North East the winner of this coveted new title will be crowned live at this year's two day NECTA Salon Culinaire event at Newcastle Civic Centre on May 8. Apart from the honour of being judged the top nonprofessional in the region the winner will also get to spend time working with awardwinning chef Michael Penaluna and his team at Jesmond Dene House, see their winning dishes on the restaurant menu and demonstrate one of their winning dishes to a live audience at Tynemouth Food Festival. 12noon: Gareth Kyle, ITV Best British Dish and four times MasterChef Live winner www.garethkyle.co.uk Gareth has been cooking for as long as he can remember. His two earliest memories are the 1990 football World Cup and being caught by his mum in the kitchen with a pan on the stove cooking lemonade soup! Luckily, his skills are much sharper now! He is a self taught cook and has taken part in a number of cooking competitions. He was a winner of the 2012 EAT! NewcastleGateshead Trial Shift Competition and the 2011 Masterchef Live competition at the BBC Good Food show. He then went on to win a Masterchef ‘Champion of Champions’ event at the London Studios. In 2010 he was a final regional contender on ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish. Gareth also worked ‘stages’ at Rockliffe Hall with Kenny Atkinson and at Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle with Troy Terrington now of Jesmond Dene House. Gareth now organises pop-up restaurant events and offers private dining services to individual clients as well as working on blog and food article writing, cookery classes, event and food festival management and a street food concept to be launched in 2014. 1pm: David Kennedy, David Kennedy at Vallum, Vallum Farm, Military Road, East Wallhouses, Northumberland. 01434 672 406, www.vallumfarm.co.uk Former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy made his name at Newcastle’s Black Door, the award-winning restaurant on Clayton Street West he opened in 2003. This was followed by Brasserie Black Door which has now morphed into the acclaimed David Kennedy’s Food Social at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, where he is executive chef. His name also appears above the door at the Bib Gourmand David Kennedy’s River Café on North Shields Fish Quay. In autumn he opened David Kennedy at Vallum in the Tyne Valley where he continues to be a vocal advocate of local and seasonal produce which he champions on his ever-changing menus. 2pm: Dr Claire Watson-Laney. Northumberland Sausage Company, Roses Bower, Wark, Hexham. NE48 3DX Claire and her team make delicious sausages such as Pork & Leek, Pork, tomato and mozzarella, Beef chocolate & chilli! Their aim is to turn the humble banger into a delicious delight! “ Our sausages are great quality at a great price and always contain excellent ingredients. Look out for guest exciting flavours!” Claire will be demonstrating sausage making and beware she will be looking for some willing helpers from the audience! 11
