NEWS Creating a Special Interest Group Dr Pat Schofield BPS Honorary Secretary The British Pain Society currently has a number of special interest groups (SIG). These are small subsidiary groups who share a particular interest in a topic or theme. For example we have groups related to pain in older people; acute pain; education; neuropathic pain; intervention and many more. These special interest groups provide workshops for the ASM, stand alone study days and expert advice to council or other representatives on topics related to the SIG focus. Another activity that a SIG may lead on is the development of guidelines, for example, the older people SIG has helped to produce guidelines for the assessment of pain in older adults and we are leading on the development of guidelines for the management of pain in older adults. There are certain criteria that must be met before setting up a SIG: Members will only be eligible for approval as an Affiliated or Society Special Interest Group if: • its sole purpose is to carry out the Society's objects within its specialist area • it consists of at least twenty five (25) Ordinary and/or Honorary and/or Retired Members of the Society • all its members are members of the Society • it is open to more than one professional group or area of discipline - its interest will be in one subject area and it has a governing document in force How the SIG runs is totally dependent upon the membership of each SIG and there is some variation between the SIG’s currently in place. For example, a SIG may operate with a chair, treasurer, secretary and council members in a similar format to the current BPS council. Alternatively, they may have members who lead on particular aspects such as education, policy or research. This will be influenced by the SIG being a Society or Affiliated SIG. Affiliated or Society SIG’s There are two types of SIG within the BPS: • Affiliated SIG • Society Special Interest Group Both are subject to similar regulations with the exception of funds and liability insurance. An affiliated SIG may have its own funds in place and must have a governing document and liability insurance in place. An Affiliated Special Interest Group may open and maintain a bank account in its own name for the receipt of funds which shall be under the control of the Group. All assets and funds acquired or received by or under the control of an Affiliated Special Interest Group belong to it (subject to any third party rights) and are under its control. The Society has no entitlement to any of those assets and funds (except as may otherwise be agreed between the Society and the Affiliated Special Interest Group). However, the SIG in this case is liable for its own debts and liabilities. In contrast the Society SIG does not have the right to open its own bank account or have its own funds. Any income must be agreed by council and be as the result of a comprehensive business plan put forward to the treasurer. So for example in running a study day any income and expenditure should be demonstrated. Setting up a SIG So how can you set up a SIG? As stated above - A SIG must contain 25 members, these can be ordinary members, honorary members or retired members of any discipline as long as they are current members of the BPS. The written application should be submitted to the honorary secretary of the society with the following information: • the name of the proposed Society Special Interest Group; • the name of its proposed chairman and other officers; • a description of its proposed activities and scientific focus; • such other information as the Council may require. It is not necessary for all applicants to sign the same letter. If approved, by council, the SIG may be formed and would be incorporated into the society. As such, the group is subject to the control of the society. In order to become an Affiliated SIG the following are required: • the name of the proposed Affiliated Special Interest Group; • the names of all its members; • the names of its officers; • a description of its proposed activities and scientific focus; • details of any professional indemnity/public liability insurance; • a description of its proposed funding; • a copy of its governing document; • such other information as the Council may require If approved by council this type of SIG is an independent organisation from the society and An Affiliated Special Interest Group may describe itself as "a special interest group affiliated to The British Pain Society”. The application form can be downloaded from the BPS website http://www.britishpainsociety.org/ SIG_Application_form.pdf Benefits of being a SIG Both SIG’s can describe themselves as a “special interest group of the society” or “affiliated SIG of the society”. They can also both be listed in the Society’s Directory of members and dates and places of their meetings can be listed free of charge in both the newsletter and website. Subject to approval of council the society’s mailing lists and facilities to publicise forthcoming events may be used. Scientific or business meetings may also be held by both SIG’s at the ASM subject to approval by the chairman of the courses and meetings committee on a space available basis. Requirements of the SIG When approved by council, a council link person will be allocated to the SIG and will act as liaison between the SIG chair and council. The SIG will be expected to update council of any developments or plans and as such will be invited to produce a report which is presented at each council meeting. will also be expected to produce an annual report and give a verbal presentation at a SIG chairs meeting scheduled for the ASM. At the Manchester ASM this year a new special interest group of the BPS was formed. The Primary Care SIG's aim is: • To push forward the pain agenda in primary care under the stewardship of its chair Ms Val Conway and co-chair Dr Cathy Price. The BPS council liaison member is Dr Joan Hester. Further information on setting up a SIG can be down loaded from the BPS website. http://www. britishpainsociety.org/members_sigs. htm NEWS Formation of New Special Interest Groups • To encourage better linkage and understanding between primary care and hospital pain services and to promote best practice for pain management in primary care. • To encourage research into pain management in primary care and to develop a consensus as to skills and competencies needed to manage pain in primary care. A webpage for primary care is hoped to be hosted on the BPS website. Further work of the SIG will involve organising meetings, seminars and workshops on aspects of pain management in primary care. For further information please contact val.conway@ekht.nhs.uk Plans are also afoot to form a Pain in Developing Countries SIG (PDCSIG). This SIG plans to explore the issues of inadequate pain relief in the developing world and methods by which this situation can improve. It is hoped that health links, education, advocacy and pain research can occur and the group hope to dovetail their work with the IASP Developing world group who are about to embark on a new workstream programme. There was considerable interest at the scoping meeting held at the Manchester ASM and currently the proposed chair of the SIG is Dr Mike Basler and the co secretary is Dr Clare Roques. It is hoped that a first seminar will occur at next year's ASM.
