From the Honorary
Secretary
Dr Pat Scholfield
This is my first report for Pain
News so I would like to say hello
to all and thank you to Dr William
Campbell who has supported me
in my year as Honorary Secretary
Elect. I will try to maintain the
excellent standard of updating
members that has preceded
my appointment. I have been
on council before as an elected
member, but things have moved
on since then. A nurse academic
by background, I am now based
in Aberdeen and some of you
may know me as being the chair
of the Pain in Older People SIG.
Therefore, you may guess that
my particular interest is around
pain in older people and I am
currently carrying out research in
Aberdeen on this topic. I have a
home up north on the Moray Firth
overlooking the sea and I love
sailing. We live in Aberdeen during
the week and stay up there at
weekends and holidays. So that is a
bit about me, now to the important
business of updating you all on the
work of council and the society.
Annual Scientific Meeting
Another ASM now over and
already the plans for next year are
underway. I personally enjoyed
this year’s event. The venue
was excellent and the range of
speakers superb. Thanks must go
to Prof. Chris Eccleston and the
Scientific Programme Committee
for maintaining the tradition of
excellence. The numbers were
slightly down this year, a sign of
the times. But we did have over
100 registrants sign up on site.
I thought that there were some
excellent plenary speakers and
I am thankful that they have all
now managed to return to their
homes. The workshops too were
very topical and interesting. I also
found the lunches were good and
noted many positive comments
from registrants about this. Please
remember to put the dates in your
diary for next year and note that it
will be in June as a joint ASM with
the Canadian Pain Society.
Dr Simon Davies. Information on
britishpainsociety.org/join_home.
htm and the benefits of joining are
many.
Election of Council Members
As many of you know at the AGM
we announced our new members
and this year we appointed all
new executive officers. We are all
grateful to Professor Sir Michael
Bond who stepped in as Interim
President and maintained the good
standing of the Society with his
steady hand. We now have our
new President; Professor Richard
Langford. Dr William Campbell
has stepped down to be replaced
by myself with Dr Peter Evans
(Treasurer) being replaced by
Dr John Goddard. New council
