Reflections from Fr. David
As you can imagine from knowing a bit of my life
story, I was not raised on the Baltimore Catechism
but the Small Catechism of Martin Luther. As part
of our confirmation program, my classmates and I
had to memorize large portions of it and take tests in
which we wrote out from memory lengthy passages.
I loved it!
Anyway, in Luther’s Catechism he goes through
many of the basics of the Christian faith and
explains them. When it comes to explaining the Ten
Commandments, he wants people to know that the
Commandment from God is not merely a “thou
shalt not” but also a direction toward positive
action. For instance, in his section on the Fifth
Commandment, Luther writes:
You shall not murder. What does
this mean? We should fear and love
God so that we do not hurt or
harm our neighbor in his body, but
help and support him in every physical
need.
Here Luther displays a sense of the
heart of Christ; there is no great
virtue in refraining from
murder...no, we must also help the
lives of others and treat them
actively with love, compassion and
respect.
In my homily last weekend I invited the folks at
Mass to see the way out of the chaos of last week’s
terror and tragedies (in Boston, Texas and Plainfield)
through the eyes and prophetic, faithful invitation of
one of those killed in the Boston bombings. Martin
Richard, whose picture is on this page, was a fellow
Catholic who only last year made his First
Communion, and a pupil at his local parish school.
The picture comes from a school project and the
poster he made turns out to be a moving, loving and
holy invitation to us and all the world:
No more hurting people. Peace.
“...and a little child shall lead them.” (Isaiah 11:6).
Martin is a living reminder of the holy possibility of
a child of God hearing his voice and sharing it
fruitfully with all the world. Here, like the Crucified
One, is one of his faithful followers who himself
would suffer cruel and deadly violence, echoing the
Lord’s own words of compassion in the face of
murder, hatred and the power of terror and death.
But I want to invite us to combine Martin Richard’s
prophetic invitation to stop the cycle of violence
with Luther’s own pattern of seeing the fullness of
the meaning of the Lord’s invitation and
commandment.
Indeed, as followers of Jesus we live under the
command of God not to hurt people any more. But
the commandment goes beyond an absence of doing
harm. Not doing harm is not the
true fulfillment of the
commandment of the Lord; it must
be accompanied by the equally
binding command to do good to
people. This can be seen in the final
word on the sign...Peace. Peace is
not the absence of war or violence.
If we want peace, said Pope Paul
VI, we must work for justice.
That is, if we truly want to live the
invitation of “no more hurting
people” this does not mean that we are merely to
leave others alone. Rather, we are to see everyone as
neighbor, as our brother and sister in the
Lord...whether we like them or not. As followers of
Jesus (and he reminds us that we follow him most
truly when we obey his commands!) we are to reach
out to others in love, compassion, justice and mercy.
Here the invitation of Pope Francis is oh so relevant!
The call to enact the love of Jesus by reaching out to
the poor, to our neighbor and bringing the presence
of Christ. We are not merely to refrain from hurting
- we are called to do the work of the Lord to bind up
the wounds of this world...all in the Name and
aided by the love of the Wounded One.
Lord, give us grace to let Martin Richard’s
words...your words...live in us!
Our Family in Faith
As I Have Loved You
by Ernie Basile
At this writing, our nation is still reeling from the bombing at Boston's marathon. More violence. Yet also
more acts of courage, compassion, and love on the part of medical providers, first responders, and
innocent bystanders. We are still hearing reports of real heroes acting instinctively to help, in spite of
danger. Some of these heroes seem to be ordinary people like you and me. They never thought of
themselves as heroic, but were simply reacting to the plight of fellow human beings. Somewhat like Anne
Smedinghoff, the young woman who was trying to make a difference but was killed in Afghanistan and
laid to rest in River Forest recently. Or Father Emil Kapaun, Korean War chaplain awarded the Medal of
Honor posthumously for heroism in battle.
Today's gospel reading reminds us that we have received a new commandment from Christ - to love one
another as He has loved us. This is so important that He says it will be precisely how people will know
we are His followers - by our love. And for most of us, that love will probably not be in a moment of
disaster or crisis as much as in our day-by-day fidelity and compassion. And through this daily fidelity
and compassion, perhaps we will be poised even to be heroic if the challenge should come.
Some Catholic theologians believe that the human race is undergoing a spiritual evolution. More and
more people of all faiths, they say, are committed to daily prayer and meditation, silence and listening to
the Holy Spirit. Throughout the world, more and more people are spending time in prayer before the
Blessed Sacrament. Through all of this, an awareness is developing, a consciousness that we are all interrelated.
So as the world around us seems to be spinning out of control through violence and hatred, at the
same time something new and hopeful is being born, and we are part of it.
As we look to our sisters and brothers in Boston and other places where violence has occurred, we see
very few hearts filled with hate and violence, and so many hearts filled with hope, resolve, and
generosity.
"Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves,
the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love,
and then, for a second time in the history of the world,
humans will have discovered fire."
-Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.
You can choose your donation dates, types and frequencies, as well as enter multiple payment methods.
When you access the online giving website the first time, you will need to create a personal account. At
the SMI Online Giving home page, you can use the “Create New Account” option on top, or the “Sign up
for a New Account” option on the right side. There is a “Watch Help Video” link which shows a brief
tutorial on creating a new account, as well as a FAQs link and other useful information.
After you create your User ID and Password, and enter your basic contact info, you will receive a
confirmation email with another link you’ll need to click to confirm your account. Once confirmed, you
can enter your payment methods and make new gifts, either one-time or recurring, to our weekly,
monthly, and special collections throughout the year. You can also manage your active giving and view
your giving history. Again there are Help Videos available for each of these options.
If you are using our original ACH/Credit Card program through the Authorization Form in the
bulletin, and you start giving in Online Giving, please call the Parish Office to discontinue your
donations in the original system. Failure to do so could result in duplicate donations being processed.
Please contact the Parish Office at 815-436-2651 if you have any questions.
Are you Connected?
May Crowning and Mother’s Day Blessing
May 11 & 12 during Masses
The Church has traditionally dedicated the month of May to Our Lady, as a
Thank you From the Easter Basket Ministry!!
Every Easter our parish is very generous in
giving to the Easter Basket Ministry! Just this
week I received a letter from Morning Star
Mission thanking St Mary’s for helping to
provide Baskets for 200 families in need. Easter
Bags were also donated to children at Day Break
and the Plainfield Food Pantry.
I am so thankful to the Parish for the support in
making our Ministry a success. To the
parishioners, students and families who donated
and made Easter Baskets, THANK YOU!
A special THANK YOU to the confirmation
students, mentors and parents. They helped to
sort the goodies for the Bag, and had fun putting together 295 Easter Bags for the children. Without
their help this would not be possible. Pictured here are Confirmation students and volunteers.
Family Life
In today’s Gospel Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another as He
had loved them. He still continues to give us this same command over 2000
years later. Do we reflect this love in our lives and relationships, especially
our marriage relationship, so that our children, family, friends and even
strangers see us as followers of Jesus? Let God show you how to love your
spouse and others as He loves you. Attend the next Worldwide Marriage
Men and Women
For the courage and grace to love as Christ
see Christ in our world.
We pray to the Lord.
Por la valentía y la gracia de amar igual que
Word of Life
I fear that the federal government’s respect for
believers and people of conscience no longer
measures up to the treatment Americans have a
right to expect from their elected representatives.
The new approach [in the Notice of Proposed
Rule-Making regarding the HHS
“contraceptive mandate”] even threatens
to undermine access to quality health
care, by telling providers as well as those
who offer or purchase insurance that they
need to drop their participation in the
health care system if they want to preserve their
religious and moral integrity. A restoration of
full respect for one of our Nation’s founding
values is urgently needed.
~ Most Rev. William E. Lori, Archbishop of
Baltimore, Chairman of the USCCB Ad Hoc
Committee on Religious Liberty, Letter to
Members of Congress (February 15, 2013)
Bible Study—The Book of Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the church’s prayer book; a family heirloom passed on
to us from our Jewish brothers and sisters. A study of the psalms is a study
of the images, themes, and deeper understandings of the Old Testament. We
are all familiar with the 23rd Psalm, the Lord is my Shepherd. But there are
many psalms the church uses as songs; meditations sung each Sunday, and
some read each day of the liturgical year. We will study psalm types:
laments, praise, and thanksgiving. We will learn how to see Jesus in the
psalms. We will read all the psalms and become familiar with the most basic
images of who God is in the psalms. Our main goal is to become a more
prayerful and more knowledgeable people regarding the psalms. Come read, sing, and chant all
our beautiful psalms on Mondays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. starting June 10 for 10 weeks in the
Stewardship Room. More details will be provided in future bulletins.
SMIP 3rd Graders Perform Easter Play
Mrs. Ann Lundberg’s 3rd Grade Class performed an Easter play on Friday afternoon April 5, at 2:00
in the Waldorf Room at St. Mary Immaculate School.
Mrs. Lundberg stated that, “We did the play as a way to enhance our understanding of the Easter
story by acting it out. We were very excited to perform for our 7th grade buddies, and for our
parents and grandparents. We were especially excited that Father Stan and Father John were able to
be there for our performance!“
In Act One, the Apostles and the women go to the tomb, find it empty
and then encounter Jesus.
In Act Two, Jesus comes to the Upper Room, then gives the Apostles
their mission, ascends to Heaven, and sends the Holy Spirit.
