I am writing this reflection on Wednesday, the day
of rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States
(SCOTUS) on several issues related to granting legal
marital status to same-sex couples. Essentially, it
appears that the Court has done several things
today:
• Struck down California’s proposition 8 law which
was enacted by popular referendum but found to be
unconstitutional by a court in that state. The
SCOTUS found that Prop 8 was illegal because those
that put forward the referendum (private citizens)
had no standing to do so. The Court did not rule on
the merits of same-sex marriage.
• The SCOTUS held that in states that have given
legal status to same-sex marriage, there can be no
denial at the federal, state or local level of the
benefits due to heterosexual
married couples (this is where
the SCOTUS struck down parts
of the federal Defense of
Marriage Act [DOMA]).
• The SCOTUS declined to declare same-sex
marriage a fundamental right and affirmed states’
rights to define marriage (but apparently this can
only be done in states by legislatures and courts, not
citizens voting in a referendum).
• The Court left intact a provision within DOMA
allowing for states not to recognize the legal status
of same-sex marriages performed in other states.
Reflections from Fr. David
Big News this week from
the Supreme Court
there have yet to be statements issued by either
Bishop Conlon or Cardinal George.
As you likely know, I am a strong advocate of our
Church’s teaching on the value and integrity of all
persons, regarding of issues of sexual preferences.
All people are created by God, they are our neighbors
to be loved (as instructed by the Lord) and many are
our brothers and sisters in faith to be treasured.
But what is going on with issues of marriage is
breathtaking both in its rapidity and in its scope and
ambition.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently described
the push for legalization of same-sex marriage as
“... a long journey that we’ve been [on] as a
country…” However much I might like the mayor
of my hometown, his statement is a false
description. What is happening
in our nation is not part of a
long journey but rather like a
tsunami of political action that
has come not from considered
public discourse. Instead there has been great social
pressure to put the agenda forward for legalization
of same-sex marriage.
Many people in our nation and others disagree with
this trend. Many people within our Church
disagree, too. And to disagree is not to hate! The
demand that all people think the same without
allowing for true discussion and diversity of opinion
is not part of a truly democratic society.
As you can imagine, the response from the Bishops
of our nation has been one of deep disappointment.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York
and President of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops, said: “Today is a tragic day for
marriage and our nation...The Court got it wrong.
The federal government ought to respect the truth
that marriage is the union of one man and one
woman, even where states fail to do so...The
common good of all, especially our children,
depends upon a society that strives to uphold the
truth of marriage. Now is the time to redouble our
efforts to witness to this truth…” As of this writing,
Among my many reasons for concern is the trend in
our nation and others (notably the United Kingdom)
that, in legalizing same-sex marriage, adultery laws
are either being abandoned all together (as a
grounds for divorce) or adultery is defined as sexual
contact by a married person with someone not their
spouse who is of the opposite gender! Is this marriage
equality? Only heterosexuals can commit adultery?!
This is not about marriage equality but rather an
effort directed toward the total reworking of our
society’s understanding of appropriate
relationships, values and boundaries. It is a tragedy
that most people do not really understand this.
God’s Top Ten List
by Ernie Basile
It dawned on me the other day that God has boiled down to ten all the things He wants us to do or to
avoid - His top 10. He gave the list to Moses, and they were written in stone, so we know this is serious
business. It also dawned on me that one of these top 10 Commandments given to us by our creator is
"Honor your father and your mother." I don't remember ever hearing a homily or reading an article on
this subject. What does it really mean to honor our parents, especially after we have grown up?
Obviously, our relationship with our parents shifts as we grow older. At first we are totally dependent
upon them, and obedience and respect are primary. But as we mature and become adults ourselves, our
relationship takes on the quality of friends. We share more as equals, and learn to make our own
decisions as our parents learn to let go and see us go our own way. As life progresses, we often see the
parent/child relationship shift once again, as an aging mother or father loses independence, and their
offspring take on more tasks, decisions, and leadership. These are not easy waters to navigate. Since no
family is perfect, there will be a lot of stumbling, going back to old patterns of relating, a process of trial
and error. For those who are in the "sandwich generation" - those who are still raising a family but now
are also tending to their aging parents more and more - fulfilling the 4th commandment can be a
challenge to say the least.
Mother Teresa once said that she was struck by the loneliness so common in our American society. This
loneliness exists at all ages, but she saw it especially in the elderly. It seems that what the elderly need
most is simply the gift of presence, company, "being there." In our task-oriented society which is successdirected,
performance-driven; where time is money and multi-tasking a necessity, just being with
someone is not as easy as it sounds. We seem to have lost that art to a great degree.
Psychology tells us that older people instinctively like to reminisce, to talk about the past, to do what is
called a "life review." If they have someone who is able to be truly present and to listen as they tell their
story, often accompanied by looking at old photos, then these older persons have received a true gift.
What we are giving them is not just something they find pleasant to do, but a real opportunity to advance
their own spiritual growth. Each stage of life has a special challenge which we must meet if we are to
grow psychologically and advance to the next stage. The life challenge of our older years, the last stage, is
to integrate all of our life experiences, to find meaning and understanding of what our life was about. For
us who believe, this means seeing the presence of God in all the turns in our journey, seeing how He was
there in our successes and failures, in the peaks and the valleys.
If we have elderly parents, spending time with them as they reminisce, listening to their story, is one of
the most valuable gifts we can give them; one precious way of honoring our mother and father. And after
all, this is one of God's top 10.
Erick Erickson, a developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst, suggests that we develop over our life
span in 8 stages, from infancy to old age. Several summaries of his views can be found online and his
books are in most libraries.
Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know
there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the
Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself never to
Word of Life
It is imperative that the entire Catholic community
in the United States come to realize the
grave threats to the Church’s public moral
witness….The seriousness of these threats
needs to be clearly appreciated at every
level of ecclesial life. Of particular concern
are certain attempts being made to limit
that most cherished of American freedoms,
the freedom of religion
~ Pope Benedict XVI, “Address to the Bishops
of United States of America on their
