SMCC Hosts Forum on Maine Labor Skills
and Higher Education
SMCC hosted a forum
on September 14, on higher
education and economic
development with local and
national experts. The event
included comments from U.S.
Deputy Assistant Secretary for
Community Colleges, Frank
Chong, a panel discussion with
regional workforce experts, and
the presentation of a detailed
new study on Maine’s looming
education and workforce
skills gaps.
Titled “Closing the Gap,”
the new report identifies and
examines 26,000 new highwage
and growth jobs that are
expected to be created in Maine
over ten years and contrasts
this demand with the supply of
skilled workers and qualified
college graduates that Maine
will produce over the same
period. The report forecasts
some significant skills gaps in Maine, most notably a shortage of 1,567 associate
degree workers needed to fill jobs in information and computer technology. If the
skills gap is left unaddressed, as many as 4,000 high-wage jobs could go unfilled.
We hope this study will be the beginning of a conversation in Maine about
focusing more investment in higher education that is designed to drive economic
growth and close these gaps,” said President of SMCC, Dr. Ronald Cantor. “The
benefits are great: for every 1,000 of these jobs that Maine fills, we will see an
economic ripple effect that creates 2,100 new jobs and generates $430 million in
new sales and incomes.”
Author of “Closing the Gap,” Chuck Lawton wrote, “If the current supplydemand
imbalance persists, Maine will suffer a severe shortage of workers in
computer, information and related support services and in precision production
occupations. If Maine does not reallocate education and training resources to
PRESIDENTIAL FORUM
Wrap Up
At the first President’s Forum on
September 15, President Cantor spoke
about the launch of the Journal Innovation
& Transformation at the SMCC Forum on
Education & Economic Development
which included the release of a new report,
“Closing the Gap,” on Maine education
and workforce skills gaps and the economic
impacts of higher education. (see Forum
article on page 1)
President Cantor addressed the recent
graffiti incident and said that the campus has
never been the target of hateful graffiti like
this in the past. He spoke with concerned
local people and commented on the press the
College received on the subject. Anne Jordan
mentioned that other local schools have
had similar problems recently. Herb Adams
suggested that we work with the media to
highlight these important issues.
President Cantor answered a question
about the possibility of a smoke-free campus.
A survey was done recently about whether to
go smoke-free or not, but it was brought to
the attention of the forum attendees that the
results were not accurate. The consensus was
that the best solution would be to enforce
the 30-foot rule – no smoking within 30 feet
of a building entrance.
The President will schedule future
forums as needed to discuss emerging
College topics and every effort will be
made to schedule forums during the
activity period or at times that enable as
many people to participate as possible.
SMCC Hosts Japanese
Delegation
SMCC hosted a Japanese delegation from Maine’s sister
state Aomori Prefecture at its South Portland campus
on September 7. The delegation, including government
officials, business leaders and university faculty visited
the McKernan Center and toured the College’s new
Sustainability Center.
The visit, on September 6-10, was organized by
the Maine-Aomori Sister State Advisory Council
(MASSAC) and was indended to develop cultural,
educational and commercial opportunities between
Maine and Aomori focusing on energy as well as the
fishery and food products industries.
Maine’s relationship with the Aomori Prefecture
traces its origins to 1889. That year, the 1,500-ton
Cheseborough ship, sailing from Bath, wrecked off
the coast of Aomori. Local citizens from the village of
Shariki rescued four survivors and buried those who
died. Amidst the Cheseborough wreckage that drifted
ashore, the people of Shariki discovered Maine pears,
and planted pear trees of their own. An annual service is
held in Shariki for the sailors who lost their lives in 1889
and pears are left on the graves of the sailors who died.
auditing and weatherization. Equipped with
state of the art equipment, the SEA Center lab
offers students the chance to work with a broad
array of renewable energy systems, including
solar photovoltaic and solar hot water systems,
as well as fully functional pressurized test house
that is used to train energy auditors. The Center
will also serve as a forum for community events,
educational programs, and other activities
relating to sustainability and energy efficiency.
The event featured comments from
comprehensive set of new courses at SMCC that are
focused on sustainability and energy efficiency.
“SMCC is committed to driving economic
development and advancing sustainability in our
community and in our state,” said President Cantor.
“These new scholarships will expand access to training
for Maine workers and help us to meet the incredible
challenge of weatherizing one of the oldest housing
stocks in the country.”
SMCC will offer the Energy Auditing and Building
Analyst course starting on September 14th. This
80-hour course, developed by SMCC to be the first
on-line/in person hybrid energy auditor course in
the Northeast, prepares students to take the Building
Performance Institutes’ exam for home energy auditor
certification.
SMCC’s Weatherization Technician course, starting
on October 11th, prepares students for entry level
jobs in the growing home energy services sector,
covering basic theories of building science as well
as practical aspects of home energy improvements,
including the latest techniques and materials. The
Weatherization Technician course is 40 hours, and
successful completion will earn classroom certification
weatherization programs.
The housing stock in Maine is among the oldest in the
nation, and Maine homeowners use more imported oil
for heating than in any other state. Maine has embarked
on an ambitious plan to weatherize all homes by the year
2030.
Interested students can obtain more information
about the course and apply for scholarships by emailing
Remembering 9/11/01
On the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks
SMCC held a brief ceremony to pay tribute to the
fallen heroes and victims. Students, faculty, staff,
and local emergency responders came together as a
community at the South Portland campus to reflect
on this important day in history.
The event was led by President Cantor with
remarks from South Portland Fire Chief, Kevin
Guimond, and a SMCC fire science student,
Ashley Wax.
“We gathered as a family and a community as we
did on 9/11 to honor the people who gave their lives
trying to save others and the innocent victims of that
tragic day that left us heart-broken,” said Cantor. “As
dark a day as that was, our country came together
to create good will that continues to empower us in
challenging times.”
The College has a close relationship with firefighters
and first responders across the state. SMCC awarded
78 Public Safety degrees last spring including Fire
Science Technology, Paramedicine and Criminal
Justice. The Maine Fire Service Institute, a department
of SMCC, has statewide responsibility for firefighter
training and certification.
Bob Weimont Honored as
Educator of the Year
The board of directors for the Southern Midcoast
Maine Chamber presented
SMCC’s Bob Weimont
with “Educator of the
Year” Award at the 2011
Awards Gala on Sept. 14
at Sebasco Harbor Resort
in Phippsburg. “Each
year awards are presented
to deserving businesses
and individuals that help
make the Mid-coast area
the best place in Maine
to live, work and play,”
chamber president Steven
Wallace said in a news release. Nominations come
from individuals in the chamber’s 16-community
service area and final award selection comes from
a panel of previous honorees. Awards are given
under two broad categories, business excellence and
individual contributions. Bob has run the Bath Center
for many years and has helped enrollment at the
Bath Center grow to nearly 1,000 students this fall.
Congratulations Bob!
D’Alfonso is the first SMCC baseball player to
sign a professional contract. He has spent the last
three years playing in the Frontier league, Golden
Baseball League, and currently in the League de
Norte in Mexico.
Bob Doyle (Baseball ’71) will be inducted
posthumously as he passed in 2005. Doyle was
a standout pitcher during his two seasons at the
College. Doyle was instrumental in leading the way
to winning the State Technical College Series title
in 1970 and 1971. He also pitched a shutout win
in the 1970 Northern New England Small College
Conference (NNESCC) title game. Doyle was a
two-time State Technical College Conference All
Star and was a (NNESCC) Honor Squad recipient.
Upon leaving SMCC, Doyle continued to be a
fixture in the local baseball scene. He was a past
president of Maine Babe Ruth, and had a 12-year
coaching career at St. Josephs College in Maine. He
was recently inducted into the 2011 Maine Baseball
Hall of Fame.
“Both inductees had outstanding careers while at
SMCC and also have made significant contributions
and success upon leaving the college,” said SMCC
Director of Athletics Matt Richards. “Induction into
the Athletics Hall of Fame is very fitting for them
as they exemplify what we hope our current student
athletes will strive to become.”
Create a New Signature Dish
Walking into the foyer of the McKernan Center,
you are immediately aware of the handsome Mission
Style architectural details: graceful curves, geometric
patterning, beautifully grained wood and the lovely
central timepiece. You are tempted to proceed directly
into the lobby with its inviting grand staircase but there
is a decorative detail in the periphery of your vision that
piques on your curiosity. Turning to your right, you are
greeted by a vision of texture and movement, structure
and composition, color and luminosity, a challenge and
response to creativity. Glass artist Sarah Pratt-Smith was
commissioned to create the decorative windows and
ceiling lighting
to complement
this interior
when the
building
underwent
extensive
renovations.
When Jill
Hannaford first
walked in to
the McKernan
Hospitality
Center for an
interview for
the position of Chef, she was drawn to this window and
recognized its potential to inspire a culinary creation.
Once settled in the job and finding herself surrounded
by enthusiastic and talented student staff in the
kitchen, she initiated “Test Kitchen Mondays”, a time
when students could drop by and work alongside Jill
in the kitchen testing new recipes, plating and ideas.
The development of a signature dessert based on the
stained glass windows was at the top of the list of
creative projects to pursue. Six students attended the
first session and they discussed the design elements
present in the window and the flavors that came
to mind. They then studied in more details the
windows and ceiling lights, sketching ideas, plating
The stained glass window at McKernan Center that
inspired the new signature dish
compositions, noting flavors and textures.
The end process involved the testing of recipes
for the different components of the dessert. The
requirements for the final selection were:
• the flavors had to work together yet please the palate
• the components of the dessert had to be able to be
made ahead of time
• the dessert had to be easy to plate for groups of up
to 100
• and there had to be a visible link to the windows.
The new signature dessert consists of a dense
buttermilk cake with layers of raspberry jam and white
and chocolate ganache. The icing is textured white
chocolate ganache. The rectangular slice sits on a
raspberry coulis. Beside the cake is a lemon curd mousse
in a lemon shell, garnished with crystallized lemon zest.
A curved band of chocolate completes the presentation.
Culinary student, Dave Provencher did the honors
of presenting this new dessert on September 14th, at a
lunch hosted by Dr. Cantor at the Mckernan Center for
a group of fire chiefs. Dr. Cantor, in a thank you email,
said “...who knew that a piece of stained glass could be
so delicious?”
Now, the new dessert needs to be named. The
window that the dessert was based on is titled,
“Seaglass”. Suggestions have included, “Sweet Seaglass”,
“Reflections”, and “A Taste of Hospitality.” Since the
collaborative process was so successful in designing
this new dessert, all are invited to to help name the
new signature dessert! Please send your suggestions to
MckernanCenter@smccME.edu. If your idea is selected,
a special dessert will be delivered to your staff for an
upcoming meeting!
SMCC Business Club Travels
to Boston
SMCC students and faculty traveled to Boston
last April for their annual spring Business
Club trip. The group including: Sean Sabine,
Caleb Berry, Chris Kraus, Mike Bowser, Arthur
Kuznetsov, John Young, Nico Seiler, Kyle
Capponcelli and John Chen, and faculty members
Charlie Pearson and Steve Strand.
On Thursday evening, April 28th, the Club
took in a Red Sox game which was a first for
many members. On Saturday, the Club toured
the grounds of Harvard Univerity. The Club
then traveled by subway to tour a liquid
manufacturing company in suburban Boston.
Students got a firsthand look at all that is
involved in manufacturing, distribution and
marketing. Later, the Club dined at world famous
Union Oyster House.
The Boston Bruins were in the middle of their
Stanley Cup championship run, so Boston was
abuzz with Bruins shirts, hats, sovineers and
sports fever.
The SMCC Biz Club is a student-run
organization and is open to all those interested.
The Club meets on Thursdays at 12:30pm on the
1st floor of Hague in the Weisbein Business Club
Lounge.
Forum on Labor Skills
address this existing and potentially growing labor
supply gap, the state’s economic prosperity will be
threatened.”
In a direct effort to overcome these skills gaps
and meet the state’s job growth potential, SMCC is
establishing a new Midcoast Campus at Brunswick
Landing—the former Naval Air Station. Working with
businesses at or coming to Brunswick Landing as well
as with the University of Maine College of Engineering,
SMCC will establish certificate and Associate degree
programs and pathways to Bachelor’s and graduate
programs specifically designed to overcome the skills
gaps that now limit Maine’s economic prosperity.
While the Midcoast Campus will serve that region
of the state, its impact will be felt all across the state
because it is targeting the industries most handicapped
by current skills gaps and thus those where educational
investment will have the greatest “bang for the buck”
across the entire state.
