SAN LUIS OBISPO | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK Hospice of San Luis Obispo’s Avila Beach Concours d’Elegance Avila Beach Concours d’Elegance to take place at the Avila Beach Golf Resort Hospice of San Luis Obispo County is proud to announce the third annual Avila Beach Concours d’Elegance on October 22-25. This regional event will be hosted by the Avila Beach Golf Resort and The Rossi Foundation a 501 (c)(3) cooperation with Porsche as the featured marque and showcasing fine Italian Automobiles and pre-1950 classics. All proceeds will benefit Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, which has provided all of its many services free of charge to the community since 1977. This four-day series of events will feature unique venues around the entire county, highlight the best food and wine purveyors, local artists and showcase more than 200 of the most beautiful cars in the world. All of these unique vehicles will be displayed at the Avila Beach Golf Resort on Sunday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 donation to Hospice and children 15 and under get in free. Connoisseur Tasting tickets are $75 which include unlimited food and wine tasting and live entertainment. WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK | SAN LUIS OBISPO Martin & Bryan in the Barrel Room Inviting Tasting Room PISMO BEACH WINERY Where Wine Country Meets the Beach by Michael Cervin Pismo Beach has always been associated with the Pismo clam, but the times are changing. Pismo’s very first tasting room has opened and it might make Pismo just as well known for wine. Brothers Bryan and Martin Friedman were home winemakers for years, and started as a hobby. After years of making wine they were “heavily encouraged” to go professional. “All the people we were sharing our wines with told us we should sell it,” Bryan says. And thus began a near 10 year plan to open their very own winery. They owned a rental property in Pismo Beach, but it had been leased for 10 years already and everyone assumed the tenant would stay another 10 years. When their tenant moved out they saw the perfect opportunity. “Finding a location was the limiting factor for not opening sooner,” Bryan acknowledges. Additionally, it’s far better to be close to vineyard sources than too far removed. “High www.WineCountryThisWeek.com quality fruit and as close to home as possible,” is Bryan’s motto. They are making about 1,500 cases currently and their portfolio consists of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Barbera and Petite Syrah. The Pinot Noir which they grow in the Edna and Avila valleys, utilizes four different clones. They are looking into a red blended wine and maybe adding a Pinot Gris or a Viognier for another white wine. But since it’s just them doing all of the work, they’re taking it slow. “My brother and I do pretty much everything ourselves, we’re wearing a lot of different hats.” Pismo Beach receives a tremendous number of visitors and the tasting room has seen not only guests from within the coastal communities, but California’s Central Valley and international tourists as well. “Just this last year, we’ve had people from all over the world,” Bryan says. Countries as diverse as Denmark, Korea, Africa, Australia and Ireland. The great benefit they have is that Bryan and Martin are the only game in town. The tasting room, located adjacent to the Pismo Outlet mall right off Highway 101 isn’t surrounded by verdant vineyards. Instead the urban setting is more a working facility with the crush pad next to the tasting room. “We’re family owned,” Bryan says proudly. “My wife works in the tasting room as does Martin’s daughter. We’re a tight-knit family business which is fun,” he says. Though the last year has been challenging for the brothers, it’s been more than rewarding. “We’ve met a lot of friends and met interesting people.
