Man has been riding horses for over 5,000 years.
Anyone who has ever owned a horse will know the
special bond horse and rider share and the endless
joy they bring. The relationship between horse and
rider is one of trust and builds up over time, but like
any relationship, there has to be a bit of a spark to
start with.
Whether you are looking for a horse, simply for pleasure,
for hacking, hunting, dressage, gymkhana or carriage
driving, there are hundreds of breeds to choose from.
From a beautifully poised horse from a top progeny to a
more humble mare from a less renowned background,
it’s so important for the right horse to be paired with the
right rider.
Horse riding is a sport that anyone, regardless of age,
ability or background can have a go at. Horse riding is
one of the most versatile sports you can take up. Once the
basics have been mastered at one of the various places
where you can learn to ride, you can even progress to
show jumping and dressage events.
The Equestrian Team GBR competes across a number
of disciplines and has enjoyed great success on the
World and European stage; from 2000 to 2009 Team
GBR has won 108 medals across dressage, eventing
and showjumping at Youth Level, 78 medals in paraequestrian
dressage, 20 senior medals in the Olympic
sports and 10 senior medals in the non-Olympic sports.
It’s not hard to see why Team GBR is regarded as being
one of the best in the world.
The Olympic Games feature three equestrian disciplines;
dressage, eventing and showjumping, whilst the
Paralympic Games features para-equestrian dressage.
In Athens and Beijing, Team GBR won 22 medals in both
eventing and para-equestrian dressage.
The Olympic Opening Ceremony takes place on 27th July
and will be followed by 12 days of equestrian competition
with the world’s best athletes competing for six gold
medals in the Olympic disciplines of eventing, dressage
and jumping. Greenwich Park, on the south bank of the
River Thames in south east London, will play host to the
2012 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian competitions,
plus the combined running and shooting event of the
Modern Pentathlon.
The Paralympic Games starts on 30th August; the Games
will see the world’s best para-equestrian dressage
riders battle it out for team and individual glory, with
a total 11 gold medals up for grabs over the six days.
Paralympic Game athletes are classified according to
their disability across five grades: Grade Ia is for athletes
whose impairment has the greatest impact on their
ability to ride, through to Grade IV for athletes whose
impairment has the least impact on their ability to ride.
Grades determine the complexity of the movements that
the riders perform with their horses and ensure the tests
can be judged on the skill of the rider, regardless of their
disability.
