. Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis (1922-1985) has always been one of the super top tenor players in jazz. From the<br />
beginning he had his unique sound and way to improvise, and an original, immediately identifiable tenor<br />
tone. This CD is special for several reasons. The first part is a session that Count Basie produced in 1957 for<br />
‘Lockjaw’ with another Basie alumnus, the great trumpeter Joe Newman. What makes this album unusually<br />
interesting is that Basie plays the piano while Shirley Scott plays the organ. To complete this CD, a special<br />
compilation has been added – eight little-known recordings of tunes when Basie was featuring ‘Lockjaw’ in<br />
his big band (1952-1957) which show that the pair were simply destined for each other musically in one of<br />

(tracks #1-12) in 1955. In 1957 Red signed his recording contract with Signal (tracks #13-15 on CD-1, and<br />
#1-3 on CD-2), are proof of just how much he still had to offer to jazz. He got hooked again for a while after<br />
that, until early 1959, when he made a new and brief - but successful - comeback to the scene, cutting a<br />
new LP, this time for Argo. Remarkably, the three stunning albums included in this set were made while Red<br />

‘golden’ period, 1944-1958, a lot of albums were recorded, live or in the studios. Strangely enough, this<br />
studio session, which remains one of the best ever made in that context, has never been reissued on CD. The<br />
blowing is superb, and every trumpeter is not competing each together but conversing each together, which<br />
is very rare and important to emphasize. We know that neither Dizzy nor ‘Sweets’ were ever eager of these<br />
kinds of settings (battles of the horns). In the contrary, Roy was a king at that. He really loved it. But in this<br />
reunion, he plays more naturally and he’s more relaxed that he used to be, which it gives us a much better<br />
good idea of what he really could do - very well - at that time. Three major soloists in full top form backed<br />
