448 ALVIN ALCORN WITH THE BOVISA JAZZ BAND AT THE SWING CLUB Hindustan • Tin Roof
Blues • Clarinet Marmalade • Bill Bailey • I Left My Heart In San Francisco • High Society • You Always
Hurt The One You Love • Savoy Blues • Panama (PersonneL: Luciano Invernizzi, Gigi Cavicchioli, Guido
Cairo, Fabio Turazzi, Renzo Clerici, Terenzio Belluzzo) [1974] During the 1970s Alvin undertook several
solo tours that included Australia and where we find him on this CD in 1974, in Italy. The Italian trombonist
Luciano Invernizzi and his Bovisa Band played host to many such touring New Orleans musicians during
this and the preceding decade. The songs on this recording are mostly standard bill-of-fare but the accompanying
musicians certainly rise to the occasion. Alvin does here what he is famous for; plays a straight
lead in the ensembles. “Savoy Blues” was one he played nightly while with the Ory Band and it was the
bandleader’s own composition. [Item Code: 64322 CD: $15.00]
to illustrate the spirit of New Orleans with the true professionalism and experience they have collectively
shared over many years. The material presented on this CD features solo performances by all the virtuoso
musicians. Of special note is Wendell Brunious’s rendition of the Irvin Berlin waltz “What’ll I Do”, Sammy
Rimington’s sax feature on the classic ballad “My Romance” and his clarinet solo on the Russian folk song
“Fall of Love”. The instinctive rapport and feeling shared by this group of musical friends makes this an exciting
movie-themed compilation ‘Crime Scene USA’, Giant Steps Recordings again looks to Hollywood
for ‘Lights Camera Doo Wop’ Real or just imagined, Doo Wop has become synonymous with the early 1950s
and, in turn, the emergence of teenage culture and what is believed to be coming-of-age innocence. Very
much an American phenomenon, Doo Wop has embedded itself in that nation’s psyche to the extent that
its presence is regularly heard on the soundtracks of numerous big box office films. Whether underscoring
mobster movies such as Martin Scorsese’s ‘Mean Streets’ and ‘Goodfellas’ or emphasising the rites of passage
story lines of such timeless teen classics as ‘American Graffiti’ and ‘Diner’, the 28 tracks included here
are an indication of just how widespread is this genre’s appeal. [Item Code: 64443 CD: $18.00]
901 JAY EPSTEIN FRAMEWORK Cullar • Yesterday’s Past • Giza • Tipsy • Valse Triste • TechTonic •
Solid - Liquid • Valse Quick • Kaf • The Rutles • Orion • Camino De Las Tropas (Personnel: Chris Bates, Chris Olson) [2007-2008] Framework
is a band with some history. This cooperative jazz trio has been performing in and around the Twin Cities for over 12 years but has never
endeavored to record and release any of their music until now. Comprised of 3 of the Twin Cities most sought-after musicians - Chris Bates, Jay
Epstein and Chris Olsen, Framework performs original music reflecting a wide range of moods and grooves.
From floating ethereal balladry and American-influenced swing to free-form electronic soundscapes and
deep powerful rock, Framework covers lots of territory while staying grounded in their core group concept.
The new self-titled CD stands as a testament to the group’s longevity and dedication to original music. The
CD features original compositions by all three members as well as 3 covers. The final track “Caminos de
las Tropas” by Argentinean guitarist Carlos Moscardini was brought to the band by guitarist Olson after he
traveled there on an educational trip. The other covers are actually two versions of the same song. “Valse
Triste” is a Wayne Shorter composition based on a theme by classical composer Jean Sibelius. During the
recording sessions for the album, the band was looking for some faster pieces to contrast with the mostly
mid-tempo fare it had already recorded. Bassist Chris Bates suggested to play Valse fast and see where it
went. THe result is two very divergent takes on one tune, and is a perfect example of how Framework captures
the spirit and freedom of improvisation that exists in a group that has this much history together. Other
standout moments include Olson’s songs “Cullor” and “TechTonic” with their tight ensemble figures and
inspired soloing, Epstein’s dark and moody “Giza” and Bates’ primal bass introduction to “Solid - LIquid”
