Wives And Lovers [1965/1971] Both albums heard here are from Chacksfield’s extensive Decca ‘Phase 4’
discography, and highlight his ability to handle music from the standard repertoire as well as the more contemporary
pop songs of the 1970s. First up is ‘The New Limelight’, which incorporates classic melodies by
legendary ‘tin pan alley’ composers such as Cole Porter and Harold Arlen. Also included are timeless tunes
that graced some equally memorable films: Chaplin’s Limelight and Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is 1971’s ‘Chacksfield Plays Bacharach’, which is of course a tribute to
the song writing genius of Burt Bacharach. [Item Code: 64486 CD: $18.00]
4390 TONY OSBORNE THREE BRASS BUTTONS / PIANO BRASS ‘N’ IVORY & BRASS IN THE NIGHT Do You Know The Way To San Jose
[1967/1969] Tony Osborne was one of Britain’s leading arranger-composers, and during the 1950s, ‘60s
and ‘70s was the arranger of choice for some of the world’s most famous chanteuses including Judy Garland,
Eartha Kitt, Shirley Bassey. However, this Vocalion release focuses on Tony’s own considerable skills as both
an arranger and a composer. Both albums were originally recorded for Decca’s Deram subsidiary label, and
as such bear the superb standard of audio engineering associated with that series. 1969’s ‘Brass ‘n’ Ivory’
kicks things off, featuring a nicely balanced programme of Tony Osborne originals mixed with arrangements
of contemporary popular tunes. While the latter is comprised of Tony’s colourful, driving interpretations of
various Lennon & McCartney melodies such as Get Back, Goodbye and Don’t Let Me Down as well as music
by other composers. From 1967 comes ‘Brass in the Night’, which is a more sedate affair but nevertheless put
Tony’s talents as both an arranger and composer in the spotlight. [Item Code: 64487 CD: $18.00]
4392 FRANK CHACKSFIELD AND HIS ORCHESTRA PLAYS SIMON & GARFUNKEL AND JIM WEBB
Lineman • Cecilia • The Sound Of Silence • MacArthur Park • Get Back • Michelle • Got To Get You Into
My Life • Yesterday • Something • Hey Jude • A Hard Day’s Night • Norwegian Wood • Ticket To Ride •
The Fool On The Hill • Come Together • Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da [1970/1971] This CD finds Chacksfield’s feet firmly planted in the 1970s as he
interprets, in his own inimitable style, the legendary repertoire of Simon & Garfunkel, Jim Webb and the Beatles. Aided and abetted on both albums
by arranger Johnny Keating, the first compiled here, ‘Plays Simon & Garfunkel and Jim Webb’, features typically
lush - yet modern - Chacksfield readings of famous melodies. In 1970’s ‘Plays The Beatles’ Song Book’
Chacksfield does full justice to twelve classic tunes. [Item Code: 64488 CD: $18.00]
4393 MANTOVANI AND HIS ORCHESTRA TO LOVERS EVERYWHERE & FROM MANTOVANI WITH
LOVE The Way You Look Tonight • Tea for Two • September Song • Whispering • Quando, Quando,
Quando • All of a Sudden • I Will Wait for You • Me and My Shadow • I Can’t Stop Loving You • Yellow
Where Have All the Flowers Gone? • May Each Day [1971] With this release the lush, romantic sound of
the Mantovani orchestra makes yet another appearance on the Vocalion label. ‘To Lovers Everywhere’ was
recorded in France’s Sofrason studios and originally issued on the Decca label in the early 1970s. Material
of a similar nature is on offer in the equally enchanting ‘From Mantovani with Love’, recorded in Decca’s
Broadhurst Gardens studios in London. Again, Mantovani’s long-time arrangers Roland Shaw and Cecil Milner
are on hand to provide their customary gorgeous arrangements. [Item Code: 64489 CD: $18.00]
4394 INTERNATIONAL POP ALL STARS GREAT FILM THEMES FROM MANY LANDS & VIBRATIONS
AROUND THE WORLD La Dolce Vita The Sweet Life • La Strada • La Ronde De L’amour Love’s Roundabout
• Forbidden Games • Theme From ‘Black Orpheus’ (Carnival) • Never On Sunday • Theme From ‘Saturday
Night And Sunday Morning’ • Adieu Tristesse • Anna • Nadia’s Theme • Scotland The Brave • The Rising Of The
Moon • U.S.A - Aquarius • England - Greensleeves • France - The Windmills Of Your Mind • Germany
- Muss I Denn • Portugal - Lisbon Antigua • Holland - Tulips From Amsterdam • Italy - Vieni Sul Mar •
Sweden - Swedish Rhapsody • Canada - Lindbergh • Austria - Die Fledermaus Waltz • Brazil - One Note
Samba • Spain - Aranjuez, Mon Amour [1962/1970] The mysterious International Pop All Stars make
their first appearance on the Vocalion label with this release, which compiles two of their albums recorded
for Decca’s ‘Phase 4’ series. The International Pop All Stars’ exact origins are not entirely clear, but it would
seem that they were an orchestra consisting of Belgian session musicians under the direction of Belgian
arranger-composer Harry Frekin; and, perhaps unsurprisingly, both albums heard here were recorded in
Decca’s studios in Brussels. One of the early ‘Phase 4’ releases, ‘Great Film Themes from Many Lands’
showcases immaculate, elegant renditions of music from the movies. ‘Vibrations Around the World’, another
classy affair. [Item Code: 64490 CD: $18.00]
