20 July 2012 – Newsletter No 19
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to Term 3. This is the only hard copy sent
out this term as a reminder for parents of what
they can expect weekly. At parent request through
the P&C, an electronic copy of this bulletin is also
being sent for those accustomed to the
established version. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN
RECEIVING REGULAR COPIES OF THIS BULLETIN,
PLEASE CONTACT THE SCHOOL TO HAVE EMAIL
ADDRESSES UPDATED OR AMENDED. Limited hard
copies are available from the front office each
week but electronic copies are the preferred
means of communication.
The term has had a very busy start with College
Development Day, band workshops, debating and
other music activities. For Year 12 especially, the
term is very important with the completion of
major works, Trial HSC exams and the finalisation
of their assessment programs in coming weeks.
Soon Year 8 will be making subject selections for
2013. Prompt payment of accounts issued at the
end of last term is appreciated to help us in the
provision of resources for students. Any requests
for financial assistance should be directed to the
principal in confidence. If parents did not receive
receipts for tax deductible fund contributions,
please contact the front office.
Last Term
Principal 2013 – I have been humbled by the
response to the announcement that I will be taking
up a new position at North Sydney Girls’ High from
Term 4 this year. As I said in my earlier email, this
has been a very difficult decision but one that is
consistent with my belief change is necessary for
institutions and managers for long term benefits.
This community has been exceptional in its
support of me, staff and students, forging a
powerful culture that has made Manly a leading
school in the state. There will be opportunities for
farewells through the term with my last official
function being the Year 12 graduation in Term 4.
As I said to students on the first assembly, this will
be a normal busy Term 3 for all years.
The School Education Director for the Peninsula
Network, Mr Dean White, has initiated a
consultation process with the school community
seeking input on the qualities students, staff and
parents want to see in a new principal. It is
anticipated that the merit selection process will be
conducted later this term. The following note from
Bill Hawkins, P&C President, invites parents to be
part of the consultation process:
As you know, we now have the unfortunate task
of finding a replacement for Mr Tomlin. In
preparing the search, Dean White, School
Education Director for the local network of
schools, is seeking input on what the school
community considers important criteria for the
choice. He is consulting with students and staff
and is also keen to hear from interested parents
and care givers. The P&C Executive will be putting
together a response for Dean, but we would
welcome input from anyone with a particular
view. If you would like to have your say on what
we should be looking for in our new principal then
please contact P&C President, Bill Hawkins via
email (pelicans@pobox.com) or phone 0414 918
Music Ensembles at Principals’ Conference – a
belated thank you must be extended to five
students selected for a string quintet, Brian Liu
(Year 11), Joshua Sun (Year 11), Noam Yaffe (Year
10), Ella Seabrook (Year 10) and Erica Stewart
(Year 10), and the members of the College Jazz
Ensemble, for their performances at the annual
conference of the Secondary Principals’ Council
towards the end of last term. They received many
commendations from principals across the state.
SRC Night of Stars – this initiative of the SRC held
on the second last Friday of term was a great
success. The whole evening was organised and
produced by students with staff providing only
minimal supervision. The night proudly
represented the talent and eclecticism of the
student body as well as their promotion and
organising abilities. Special thanks must go to the
SRC students led by Owen Smith and Chris Owen
and adjudicators Michael Regan, Kath and Jess
Morrison and Mr George Cowan for their
contributions to the night.
Project Penguin – 30 Year 9 students were
recognised at Taronga Zoo for their efforts in
mentoring students from North Curl Curl Public
School last term. The primary school students
developed projects which built an awareness of
how to preserve the penguin colonies of Sydney
Harbour. Thanks to Ms Deb Rixon for co‐ordinating
Manly Campus’ involvement in this program.
Sydney North Dance Festival – the two ensemble
groups who performed at the end of last term at
the Glen Street Theatre maintained the fine
reputation of school dance. Led by Chloe
Woodward, Company and The Ensemble
performed to an enthusiastic and discerning
audience over a number of nights. Thanks to Ms
Meg Tulk for helping in supervision during this
festival.
Principal’s Awards – my congratulations to those
students who were recognised in the final edition
of the newsletter at the end of last term. It is very
pleasing to see so many students meeting quite
strict criteria. The next formal recognition of
student achievement will be in Term 4 with Year
12 graduation and the school Presentation Night. A
couple of omissions from last term to be noted
include Simran Hingorani, Lauren Smith and
Sabrina Agius (Year 11) and Giles Devaney (Year
10). The ceremonies held this week recognise
achievements from last semester and provide a
fine start to the new term. Thanks to Ms Deb
Rixon, Ms Cath Whalan, Ms Meg Tulk and office
staff led by Judy Boylan for their co‐ordination
behind the scenes.
Enrolments 2013 – many parents can give first
hand evidence of their experiences with Manly but
interested parents from other schools may seek
further information. “Meet the Principal” tours are
conducted in Weeks 3 and 8 of term, although
extra tours have been scheduled as the letters of
offer for Year 7 2013 have been issued. The Annual
School Report is available on the school website
(www.manlyselective.nsw.edu.au) giving a
detailed report of school performance and a
chronicling of key events and achievements from
previous years.
Applications for enrolment in Years 8 – 12 are
open to students outside the school. Forms are
available from the front office or from the school
website or
http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/7‐
12assessments/selective8_12.php. Applications
need to be supported with as much objective
evidence as possible including school reports,
results from ICAS tests and competitions, NAPLAN
results and any previous scores from selective
tests. The closing date for applications is 31 st July
2012. Any queries can be directed to the front
office.
Youth Parliament – in the holidays I was privileged
to watch the YMCA Youth Parliament in the NSW
State Legislative Assembly chamber. Kartik Shastri
and Imogen D’Sousa (Year 10) were elected as
government and opposition whips playing key
roles in the parliament. They gave speeches on the
environment, heritage and citizenship in the first
two days and were very vocal in their
representation of North Shore and Manly
electorates respectively. The debates were
informed, intelligent and well researched.
Members of parliament briefed participants on
parliamentary procedure and etiquette (!) as well
as chairing sessions. The depth and strength of
government school representation from across the
state was especially significant. I was very assured
by the calibre of this next generation of leaders,
especially our two students. It was very pleasing to
see Emily Leckie (Year 12 2011) returning as a
supporter having participated last year whilst in
Year 12.
This Week
Year 12 Debating – congratulations are extended
to the Year 12 debating team (Lachlan Peake,
Amelia Loughland, Matthew Kearns and James
Bailey) who defeated last year’s competition
winners Smith’s Hill High this week putting them
into the state final of this elite competition at
Sydney University on the 3 rd August. This is the
second year running Manly has been represented
in the finals of the Year 12 competition with this
particular team also making it to the finals of the
Year 11 competition last year.
Their debate this week on the Syrian crisis was
superb. They demonstrated excellent knowledge,
confidence, refinement of manner and intellectual
acumen in their argument against a team that was
equally accomplished. We wish them well in the
final debate of their school career. Debaters from
other years will be invited to watch the final
debate. The opposing team was not yet been
decided at the time of printing.
Complementing this achievement is Matthew
Kearns’ selection for the NSW Combined High
Schools’ Debating team. This is an exceptional
achievement. The CHS team consists of eight
students from Sydney Boys’ High, Sydney Girls’
High, Penrith High, Smith’s Hill High and James
Ruse High. They will be in training this term in
preparation for three debates against the Archdale
Representative Team, the Greater Public Schools’
Team and the Combined Associated Schools’ Team
later in the term. Matt’s passion for contemporary
issues and ideas will be richly rewarded with this
commitment and will give him an even stronger
skills base for debating at tertiary level.
Student Exchanges (Brewarrina and Odawarra) –
we welcome back students who participated in
these two exchanges. Manly Council’s Odawarra
program has been a wonderful support for so
many local students in their knowledge of
Japanese language and culture for both classwork
and wider knowledge. This year’s participants Enzo
Merriman, James Tamhane, Oliver Fahey, Leah
Tolman (Year 9) and Jasmine Huang, Maggie
Bullen, Anastasia Chan, Molly Gourley and Danielle
Armour (Year 10) have given glowing reports to
their Japanese teacher. The Warringah Council
Youth Exchange program to Brewarrina provides a
unique opportunity for urban students to
experience first‐hand life in a remote
predominantly indigenous community. The reports
from Darcy Munce (Year 10) and Simran Hingorani
(Year 11) later in this newsletter confirm the value
of this experience.
ICAS Computer Skills Competition – results for this
competition have just become available. A very
special congratulation must go to Daniel Martin
(Year 7) who has achieved the top score for NSW
and the ACT in this very demanding and
prestigious competition. He will be receiving a
UNSW medal for his outstanding achievement. The
table below confirms the strength of the results:
Year and no. of High Distinctions
participants Distinctions
7 (91) 6 12
8 (91) 2 16
9 (120) 7 0
10 (115) 11 0
Enviro‐Inspiro Student Competition – further
congratulations must go to the student
Environment Committee whose entry has received
first place in this state competition. Aidan Molins
(Year 11), Tom Warburton (Year 12) and Jack Lo
Russo (Year 11) co‐ordinated much of this video
entry focussing on better food packaging from the
canteen, elimination of bottled water and
composting practices. They have won for the
Environment Committee $2500 to support these
environmental initiatives and $500 as a reward for
student involvement.
NSW Band Championships – one of the key
features of our school is the excellent band
program that parallels the school curriculum and
provides outstanding music experience for
students. The next challenge will be the NSW
School Band Championships to be held over this
weekend at Norths (Cammeray) and UNSW. They
rehearsed last Monday with the directors in lieu of
their last day of holidays. We wish them all the
best in this prestigious competition.
Congratulations to:
the College Netball team who have
progressed to the state finals of the highly
competitive knockout competition. We
wish the team, coached by Ms Vicki Maggs
from our school, all the best in their final
games later this term.
Angus McDonnell (Year 11) upon his
selection to participate in the Army Cadet
Overseas Exchange Program to South
Korea. Only 15 students were selected
from across Australia for the exchange
program with only five chosen for South
Korea. This is a great honour and we wish
him all the best in his adventures.
Sita Paling (Year 10), Emily English, Abigail
Marsh, Carman Stoddart and Elizabeth
Grimmond (Year 12) who are all
competing in the NSWCHS Cross Country
State Carnival this Friday. We look forward
to hearing of their results next week.
Tiana Reid (Year 9) upon her selection to
compete in the state surfing
championships this week. We look forward
to hearing of her success.
Isabela Lawira‐Fernandez (Year 8) for her
first place in the 13 years 20 th & 21 st
Century piano section of the Northern
Beaches Eisteddfod.
James Lawira‐Fernandez (Year 12) for his
Encouragement/Achievement Award in
the finals of the UMT Roger Woodward
competition.
In this regular feature we like to recognize
students who have achieved highly in school and
community events, competitions and activities.
Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic
excellence, personal best and giving back to the
community deserve to be recognized. Parents are
invited to phone or email the school any
achievements we may not be aware of for
inclusion in The Weekly Pines.
Brewarrina Exchange Experience – Darcy Munce
It is difficult for me to put my exact emotions
towards the Brewarrina Youth Exchange into
coherent sentences because there are just so many
important stories, contexts and consequences of
these emotions. Nevertheless I have to try and
express my gratitude and general happiness
towards what I gained from the trip because of the
way it personally affected me and changed my
views on indigenous culture, outback Australia and
youth in rural areas.
Heading into this trip I had never experienced
Aboriginal culture properly. Of course I had learnt
about it in school and I understood about the
dreamtime stories and basic philosophies but I had
never seen it first‐hand. I think though, it is not the
knowledge of indigenous culture that Brewarrina
gives you that really matters, I think it is the way
you can really feel the importance of the stories
you get told and start to understand the
significance of their culture within their local
community that really sticks with you after you
leave.
This was particularly highlighted by one of my
favourite moments from the trip in Gundabooka
where as a group we all had a quiet moment of
self‐reflection while our guide, Phillip, talked about
Aboriginal beliefs and values. It was a moment
that was surreal, sitting by ancient Aboriginal
carvings and silently looking back on your past and
thinking about your future. I left Gundabooka
feeling enlightened and had so many new personal
standards and cultural experiences to consider
such as the notion of right and wrong, how there is
no grey area between the two and any grey area
you think exists is just you making an excuse for
you to do something wrong.
Having never been anywhere west of Dubbo, let
alone as far west as Brewarrina, I had never
properly experienced a country lifestyle. This
involves many things including its laid back
atmosphere and ‘no worries’ vibe but the thing
that really stuck with me was the sense of
community that you don’t feel anywhere around
Sydney. On our first day in Brewarrina there was a
funeral service in town and it really seemed like
everyone from the Brewarrina area had attended
the funeral and those who hadn’t stopped
everything to honour the deceased as a procession
of cars drove through the streets.
On our visit to Lightning Ridge, we had to change
our plans and remake our schedule because of
another funeral being held in town. This meant
that a lot of the places we were planning on
visiting were closed during the morning hours
exemplifying how tight‐knit the community is
around these parts. Regardless of how close the
community was within itself, it was also very
accommodating to us ‘foreigners’ and I think this is
also testament to the people we met. Trish and
Barry treated us as long lost family, Cathy and
Graham spoiled us incredibly and every other
person we met greeted us with a friendly smile and
made a point of making our stay as incredible as
they could.
One of the main things I was hoping to gain from
this youth exchange was a fresh perspective on
problems affecting youth in areas other than my
own. I never could have imagined how privileged
we are in the Northern Beaches. It was expected
that in some ways youth would be disadvantaged
in Brewarrina due to the remoteness of the area
and other defining socio‐economic factors but it
was the small things that I noticed more than
anything, the fact that the youngest football age
group was under 14’s meaning children as young
as 11 were playing against 14 year olds just to be
able to play football. Or that local kids were forced
to use a netball as both their netball, soccer ball
and basketball, as silly and insignificant as these
problems may seem, at first they are the types of
problems you can’t really see or understand
without having been there and met the youths that
the problems affect.
I couldn’t write as much as I have about the
Brewarrina trip without mentioning and thanking
Justin and Elizabeth for all the hard work they put
into making the trip as successful as it was. I can
honestly say that the trip would not have been as
great had it not been for J‐dogs and Liz‐dogs. That
thank you extends to anyone behind the scenes
that I didn’t meet who helped organise the trip and
last, but definitely not least, the other youth
ambassadors who went. Thank you Tys, Megan,
Simran, Holly and Rhiannon for being great people
and helping make the trip an amazing experience
that I will never forget.
Brewarrina Exchange Experience – Simran
Hingorani
At school we see pictures showing us Australia’s
varying landscapes, we hear stories telling us of
the rich Aboriginal culture that is evident
throughout the country but we never get to
actually see the amazing diversity of scenery and
customs that Australia offers. Well, that’s exactly
what the Warringah Sister City exchange was to
me, an amazing opportunity to soak up the sights,
atmosphere and welcoming culture that
Brewarrina, a town 820 km north‐west of Sydney
presents. The process of applying, acceptance
phone calls, meeting the fellow ambassadors and
finally, departing from our coastal comforts,
happened all in a space of 3 weeks. Looking back
it’s a whirlwind of anxiousness, happiness and
extreme excitement, I was even excited for the 12
hour bus ride!
The trip overall was such an amazing experience
but here are a few of my highlights:

Phillip, was so passionate about the land
and hearing him tell the stories of his
people was so captivating, not to mention
he was almost a talking encyclopedia when
it came to national parks! He asked us
some challenging questions, and
encouraged us to reflect on a spiritual
level, making the unforgettable experience
greatly enlightening.
Disco ‐ at the Bre Youth Centre, we were
lucky enough to be invited to their footy
themed disco. This was so enjoyable
because we got to spend a lot of time with
the kids and I was so shocked by the
number of talented dancers! Getting to be
a part of the local community and being so
easily welcomed meant so much to me,
and I was sad to leave when we were
rushed off in order to watch the State of
Origin. The sadness was largely heightened
by the end of the game.
Fishing ‐ on our last day in town, we went
down to a place called Four Mile Reserve
to do some fishing with some help of the
locals. I had never been fishing before and
had always really wanted to, and even
though the only thing I caught were the
others’ hooks, I still had a really great time,
and it was the perfect way to end our time
in town.
Campfires every night ‐ every night we’d
often arrive back to Bokhara Hutz, our
home for the week, exhausted and ready
to crash. I loved being able to arrive every
evening to the campfire. It was the perfect
opportunity to reflect, get warm, and do
whatever we wanted to. We also were
lucky to meet some other travellers who
sat by the campfire, and hearing their
stories and plans for the future always left
me feeling liberated and happy, not to
mention they had the cutest and craziest
dogs! It was nice to do things the natural
way, not to be sitting by the heater and
watching TV like I normally would be at
home. Roasting marshmallows became the
cherry on top of the cake of happiness that
the campfires brought me!

Gundabooka National Park ‐ just outside
Bourke is a place called Gundabooka
National Park, and if I had to pick an
absolute highlight of the trip, I think it
would be our visit to the park. Our guide,
Overall, being able to go to Brewarrina as part of
the Warringah Sister City was one of the best
experiences of my life! We were able to foster such
strong relationships with the local community and
gain so much understanding of the land, and its
unique history. A massive part of the trip was being
able to fully comprehend how profound Indigenous
culture is, and how different life in Brewarrina is
compared to my own. It seems that the things I
easily take so much advantage of like going to the
mall, movies, beach, are not available for the
young children in Brewarrina and, because of this,
perspective became an incredibly important part of
the trip for me. Regardless, the community is of
such high spirits, it’s amazing to witness the warm
and inspirational people that are a part of it. I
could not think of a better way to have spent a
week of my school holidays and would recommend
it to anyone and everyone who is looking for an
incredibly memorable and fun‐filled experience.
SWO playing at Opera House
On Sunday 24 June, SWO
performed at the Australian
International Music Festival
Opening Concert at Sydney
Opera House. This
event, organised by World
Projects, featured leading ensembles from China,
Singapore, New Zealand and interstate. When a
touring group from China had to withdraw, World
Projects asked SWO to step in. With just two
week’s notice, Mark Brown led the players through
a performance filled with vibrancy. Showcasing
the talent of the overall wind orchestra, the
audience was treated to featured performances by
Jeremy Lloyd on Baritone, and our three
trumpeters ‐ James Power, James Stoddard and
Darcy Munce. All the parents and supporters in
the audience felt very proud of the Manly
students.
