L.L. had been divorced
for two years and shared
joint custody of two
children with her abusive
ex-husband. He was
named as the primary
caretaker. L.L. had been
paying child support even
though, after the first year,
the children lived with
her and only visited their
dad on weekends. One
weekend during visitation,
the children witnessed
their father abuse his new
fiancee, and one of the
children was consequently
injured. Iowa Legal Aid
represented L.L. in a divorce
modification. The judge
ordered primary physical
care to L.L., child support
to be paid by the children’s
father, and his visitation
was restricted based on
the continued abuse and
danger to the children.
