the 2005 caMpaIgn for equaL JustIce Iowa Legal Aid recently concluded its annual fundraising campaign, the 2005 Campaign for Equal Justice. Lawyers, law firms and other supporters of equal access to justice contributed over $450,000 that will enable Iowa Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys to help low-income Iowans with critical legal issues involving abuse, housing, health care, utilities, public benefits and other basic necessities. More than $135,000 of the contributions were donated by Leadership Circle law firms, which distinguished themselves by donating at least $250 per year for each lawyer in their firms. Parrish; On the Web at iowalegalaid.org J.J., a single mom, was living in an apartment with her 5 year old son and receiving a federal housing subsidy to assist with rental payments. While her landlord had been friendly at the beginning, he quickly began sexually harassing her after she entered into a lease. The landlord persisted in asking for sexual favors, and J.J. continually refused. Finally, the landlord became enraged by her rejections and refused to cash her rent check. He filed an eviction action for nonpayment of rent, which would also jeopardize her housing subsidy. J.J. came to Iowa Legal Aid asking for representation at the eviction hearing. Iowa Legal Aid agreed to represent her and helped to get the action dismissed. J.J. has since moved out of that abusive situation into a safer apartment and has been able to maintain her housing subsidy.
