Iowa LegaL aId MIssIon “The mission of Iowa Legal Aid is to secure a full measure of justice in public and private affairs for lowincome persons with emphasis on legal problems involving basic necessities, fundamental rights or safety. Iowa Legal Aid seeks to improve the lives of people living in poverty by providing high quality legal services and empower clients with self-advocacy skills through legal education. Iowa Legal Aid strives to treat all people with respect and dignity and works to dispel prevailing myths and misconceptions about low-income people.”
Dear Friends of Iowa Legal Aid: The most enduring things are ideas. The ancient Athenians built wonderful buildings in which they cultivated sublime ideas of justice and democracy. Today, even their most beautiful buildings are ruins, but their beautiful ideas are alive and expanding. When we strive to extend access to the justice system to all people, we add to and strengthen a foundation laid down long ago. Such access serves to improve the legal system and the law, which will never be settled until it is settled in complete accord with justice. As President of the Iowa Legal Aid Board of Directors, I have come to be impressed by and to respect the commitment of the lawyers and support staff of Iowa Legal Aid. They have dedicated themselves to bringing quality legal services to the Iowans most in need of such services. The work done by these selfless people does not simply improve the legal system, but also improves society and thus the quality of life for all of us. Those of you who have made donations, volunteered, or both have indeed done something good for which you are entitled to and have the gratitude of others and for which you have the right to feel justly proud. Iowa Legal Aid is not simply staff and clients, but it is also the product of all who help it in its mission. When any of us put forth efforts on behalf of Iowa legal Aid, we help build the “Strong Foundations for a Brighter Future.” Iowa Legal Aid has made, is making and will make a difference in the lives of its clients. It also makes a difference in the lives of the rest of us by helping us not only to remember that it is ideas like justice and democracy that really survive the ravages of the history but also that the foundations of justice laid down now will continue to build a strong tomorrow long after all of us are gone.
