4 MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE If you’ve received our Annual Review over the past few years you will immediately notice a significant change in the format and structure of this publication. This reflects a significant change in the purpose of The Wheel’s Annual Review. Rather than simply listing our activities during the previous year, we want to present a vivid picture of the tangible benefits of membership of The Wheel, by clearly demonstrating the range of projects we have initiated and developed over the past year, and their inherent value for members of the community and voluntary sector. Looking back on 2008, one thing is crystal clear: we have made concrete, demonstrable progress in achieving every one of our strategic goals. Each year, The Wheel’s efficacy as a unique resource for the sector grows in scope, efficiency and effectiveness, and as we enter a difficult and challenging new era, we do so with unprecedented stability and the confidence that we can continue to assist the sector, especially in a climate of increasing insecurity and uncertainty. It’s this simple: if you’re a member of our sector, there’s no better time to be a member of the organisation whose sole purpose is supporting and representing organisations in this sector: The Wheel. The Wheel’s core role is to provide support, information and representation to enable our members to achieve their own objectives more effectively. In this regard 2008 saw the further development of a range of key supports for the sector, including our innovative fundingpoint.ie website and the development of a range of high-quality workshops and guides focusing on the key area of Governance. These resources complemented our advocacy work to deliver a more supportive operational environment for our members, work which focused strongly on ensuring that the Charities Act helps and doesn’t hinder charities in delivering their mission. The innovative policy forum we introduced in 2008, and the regular policy-updater we produce, enable our members to participate fully in our work. So again, if you would like to get involved in shaping the policy environment we all work in, then you should join The Wheel. In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to join our Chairperson Seamus Boland in thanking both the members of the Board and our staff team for their unstinting efforts during the year. I would also like to thank each member of The Wheel - it is because of your continued support and commitment that we are able to support you in your own work. 5 SUPPORTING COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS 5.1 CAPACITY BUILDING EVENTS Throughout the year The Wheel operates a full schedule of events designed to help build organisations’ capacity to achieve their goals. These events cover a wide range of topics, such as governance, management, fundraising, communications and information technology, as well as offering valuable networking and partnership opportunities for participants. To enable the widest possible participation, we deliver them in venues throughout the country. Our annual programme of events is a vital part of our service to the sector, and, reflecting its importance, we hired a full-time Director of Programmes in July 2008. Already, this initiative has resulted in a more focused and responsive programme of events, tailored to the specific needs of the sector.
