• Impact on families – Violence can lead to the loss of livelihood, shame<br />
and sense of loss of family honour. Families can be shunned by others in<br />
the community and devalued by friends and relatives. Children may<br />
be unable to pursue higher education and families may be unable to<br />
arrange <strong>for</strong> better future <strong>for</strong> their children.<br />
• Impact on community and society – Violence against women has a<br />
serious impact on the country’s social and economic situation. In a<br />
community in which <strong>violence</strong> occurs, the social atmosphere becomes<br />
abnormal; the health and well being of its members are affected;<br />
anxiety, fearfulness and depression hinder the social harmony. Children<br />
miss school and women and men miss work, thus losing income in<br />
several ways. These economic losses have impacts on the development<br />
of the community and society as a whole.<br />
• Impact on perpetrators – Perpetrators of <strong>domestic</strong> <strong>violence</strong> may be<br />
devalued by friends and relatives and could face criminal prosecution<br />
(imprisonment). Their behaviour can have a significant impact on the<br />
health, wellbeing and financial situation of their family.<br />
