Don’t miss our Proven Winners®
Perennials highlighted in green,
over 100 new items in red, and our
exclusives and WGI introductions
in brown.
Extensive research has been
put into the following plant
descriptions. While every effort
has been made to portray them
accurately, please keep in mind
that the height, bloom time,
and color may differ slightly in
various climates throughout North
America. Our listings typically
describe the characteristics of a
three year old plant. They are based
on our own experience growing
these plants in Michigan as well
as numerous other resources
including those cited on p. 201 of
this catalog.
Allium ‘Millenium’
Why are Bare Root
Amsonia better?
Walters Gardens, Inc. is one of
few, if not the only, wholesale
growers in the US who offers
Amsonia in bare root form.
Though we’ve tried growing it
in plugs in the past, we’ve been
astounded by the difference in
quality since switching to bare
root production.
Allium senescens
‘Blue Eddy’
Alstroemeria INCA ICE (‘Koice’)
The number of eyes on a #1
grade bare root Amsonia ranges
from 5-8 compared to just 1 or 2
in plug form. They finish beautifully
in a 2-qt or 1-gal container,
forming a full and bushy plant.
Now that’s value!
Our #1 Grade bare root
Amsonia averages 5-8 eyes each.
Finished plants from bare root have 5-8
strong stems each and lush foliage that
fills out the pot nicely.
MICHIGAN GROWN ASTILBE
BREEDER PROFILE
Jan Verschoor
Like many Dutchmen, Jan Verschoor got his start in
the nursery business through his family’s flower bulb
business. His interest in perennials began while working
a summer job at a reputable perennial nursery.
After his father retired, Jan introduced perennial production
into the family business, focusing
first on cut flowers and then on breeding.
His first experience in breeding
was with Tall Garden Phlox (see
some of Jan’s Phlox introductions
beginning on p. 172), but through
the years he has also done extensive
work with Iris, Solidago, and Astilbe.
Astilbe YOUNIQUE Series
This series from Jan Verschoor offers a higher flower
scape count and compact foliage that results in fabulous
finished plants. Faster finishing plants produce
bunches of fragrant, triangular plumes. Individual
colors are offered below. Arendsii group.
BREEDER PROFILE
Hans Hansen
Meet Hans Hansen, one of our
resident plant experts and head of
the WGI hybridizing team. Hans
was a born gardener, working first in
his family’s garden at the age of three and
then moving on to breeding Asiatic lilies when
he was just a teenager. Though he enjoys hybridizing many
genera including Baptisia and Paeonia, he is most known for
his numerous hosta introductions including ‘Journey’s End’ (p.
136), which he considers to be one of his best. Hans is especially
excited to offer you his series of DECADENCE Baptisias,
which are the result of over a decade of his breeding work.
DECADENCE Baptisias were hybridized and selected
specifically for their shorter, more compact habit and unique
flower coloration. All members of this series are produced from
cuttings and will bloom the first year. They have terrific impulse
appeal at retail.
BAPBSG1 (False Indigo) More vibrant,
indigo blue flowers and a shorter, wellbranched
habit set this variety apart from
B. australis. Deep blue-green foliage forms
a compact, upright mound topped with
an excellent floral display. Decorative seed
pods in fall.
BAPDCG1 (False Indigo) Rich velvety
upright stems above the densely compact,
deep blue-green foliage. Decorative seed
Our #1 grade bare root
Baptisia averages 3-5
eyes each.
Finished plants from
bare root have 2-3
strong stems each and
lush foliage that fills out
the pot nicely.
Why are
Bare Root
Baptisia better?
Since Baptisia cannot be
imported from overseas, it’s
important to find a reliable
American supplier. Few,
if any, wholesale growers
in the US other than
Walters Gardens, Inc.
offer bare root Baptisia.
This native perennial
thrives in the
sandy loam soil of West
Michigan. A typical
#1 grade Baptisia has
3-5 eyes and 2-3 stems
compared to just 1 in
plug form. These bare
root liners result in
much larger finished
plants in containers
than their smaller
plug-grown counterparts,
offering a much
greater value for the
end consumer.
WALTERS GARDENS IS PROUD
TO WELCOME...
Kelly Oates
Walters Gardens is proud to welcome the newest member
of our hybridizing team, Kelly Oates. Kelly comes to us
from North Carolina State University where she recently
completed her Masters degree studying the genetic improvement
of Rudbeckia, the Black-Eyed Susan.
Kelly’s career in Horticulture began while working at
Monrovia nursery in Oregon and Ohio. There she gained
an appreciation for what it takes to grow quality perennials
efficiently. She also recognized the importance of bringing
quality new varieties to the consumer and grower.
Kelly’s practical experience in the nursery business, along
with her education in plant breeding, gives her an interesting
perspective on both the market demands for new and
distinct perennials as well as the science involved in creating
them.
Kelly loves bold flowering plants and enjoys hybridizing
Rudbeckia, Monarda, Dicentra, Helleborus, and just about
anything else she stumbles upon blooming. Look for terrific
new introductions to come from Kelly in the future!
