CONTENTS 3 4 10 3 HEART CENTER: YEAR IN REVIEW The Heart Center at ACH tied its record for heart transplants, was impacted by Hurricane Katrina, welcomed a new surgeon and performed hundreds of procedures. B98.5 staff members asked and their listeners responded generously. HOSPITAL PROGRAMS ACH Heart Center Mending Broken Hearts Jacques Brumfield, who received a heart transplant at ACH after being evacuated during Hurricane Katrina, was helped by the entire team at the ACH Heart Center, including Mandy Staggs, a certified child life specialist. Child life specialists help patients and families cope with the anxiety associated with being in the hospital, providing explanations of surgical procedures, medical play and sibling support, among other activities. Days before Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast, 9-year-old Jacques Brumfield of Angie, La., was admitted to Children’s Hospital New Orleans with heart failure. Doctors told his mother that if the medicine they were giving him didn’t work, he probably wouldn’t make it. After the hurricane moved through New Orleans, health care was compromised, and Jacques was one of many patients moved out of the area. By the time the transport team from ACH picked him up and brought him to Little Rock, his heart was failing, and he had very little possibility of surviving. Doctors at ACH moved quickly to put Jacques on a ventricular assist device (VAD) known as the Berlin Heart. The Berlin Heart is not available in the United States, nor is it approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration, except in an emergency situation. Within two weeks of being placed on the Berlin Heart, a donor heart became available for Jacques, and doctors at ACH performed a successful transplant. Jacques was one of 17 patients to receive a heart transplant at the ACH Heart Center last year and one of thousands impacted by the care provided by the heart team. The Team Congenital heart care, like that required by Jacques, requires excellent equipment and exceptional people working together as a team. Teamwork is not just a buzzword to those who work in the ACH Heart Center. The heart team has long had a model for success that involves the participation of all members of the team who have anything to do with a patient’s and family’s experience. Together, the team members are focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for all patients. Because team is at the “heart” of what they do, each year the Heart Center staff members host an annual meeting to share the team’s accomplishments over the previous year. 2005: An Interesting Year In 2005, the Heart Center at ACH tied its record for heart transplants, was impacted by Hurricane Katrina, welcomed a new surgeon and performed hundreds of procedures. These are just some of the highlights from the center’s 2005 review: The heart team performed 17 heart transplant procedures on patients in 2005, tying the hospital’s record number of transplants set in 1993. Twelve of the transplant patients were from Arkansas; the remaining five were out-of-state patients, including Jacques and another hurricane evacuee. ACH’s involvement in the Hurricane Katrina evacuation brought many pediatric evacuees to the hospital, including nine cardiovascular patients. After 10 months of being without a chief of the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program, the heart team welcomed **Dr. Robert D.B. “Jake” Jaquiss on November 1. 2005 Heart Center Statistics • 7,669 cardiology outpatient visits • 470 surgical procedures** • 17 heart transplants • 2 Berlin Hearts (bridge to transplant) • 48 patients on ECMO (heart-lung bypass) • 4/470 30-day mortality rate for surgical procedures (less than 1%) **The team was short one surgeon for 10 months; the average number of procedures is typically around 600.
