Advocate Betty Bumpers
Betty Bumpers was recently honored as the 2006 recipient of the Betty A. Lowe, M.D.Award.
The Lowe Award was initiated in honor of Dr. Lowe and in recognition of her distinguished service to Arkansas Children's Hospital,
UAMS and the children and families of Arkansas.The award recognizes a person who has been an agent of change, a particular leader
who has made a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the children of Arkansas.
Bumpers was cited for her work as the leader of a successful statewide immunization program for children during the time of her
husband’s tenure as governor. She then presented that model at a National Governors Conference, where it was adopted by governors’
wives from many states, including Rosalyn Carter. In 1991, Mrs. Bumpers and Mrs. Carter founded “Every Child by Two” to promote early
childhood immunizations.As a result of their efforts, laws mandating vaccinations at school entry now exist in every state.
