10 B98.5 LISTENERS ARE
MIRACLE MAKERS FOR ACH
Miracle Makers gifts — ongoing, monthly
donations — were a big reason why the 2006
Champions for Children Radiothon, hosted by
B98.5, was such a success. B98.5 staff members
asked and their listeners responded generously.
HOSPITAL PROGRAMS
ACH Heart Center
Mending
Broken
Hearts
Jacques Brumfield, who received a heart transplant at ACH
after being evacuated during Hurricane Katrina, was
helped by the entire team at the ACH Heart Center, including
Mandy Staggs, a certified child life specialist. Child life
specialists help patients and families cope with the anxiety
associated with being in the hospital, providing explanations
of surgical procedures, medical play and sibling
support, among other activities.
Days before Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast,
9-year-old Jacques Brumfield of Angie, La., was admitted to
Children’s Hospital New Orleans with heart failure. Doctors
told his mother that if the medicine they were giving him
didn’t work, he probably wouldn’t make it.
After the hurricane moved through New Orleans, health
care was compromised, and Jacques was one of many
patients moved out of the area.
By the time the transport team from ACH picked him up
and brought him to Little Rock, his heart was failing, and he
had very little possibility of surviving.
Doctors at ACH moved quickly to put Jacques on a
ventricular assist device (VAD) known as the Berlin Heart.
The Berlin Heart is not available in the United States, nor is
it approved for use by the United States Food and Drug
Administration, except in an emergency situation. Within
two weeks of being placed on the Berlin Heart, a donor
heart became available for Jacques, and doctors at ACH
performed a successful transplant.
Jacques was one of 17 patients to receive a heart
transplant at the ACH Heart Center last year and one of
thousands impacted by the care provided by the heart team.
The Team
Congenital heart care, like that required by Jacques,
requires excellent equipment and exceptional people working
together as a team. Teamwork is not just a buzzword to
those who work in the ACH Heart Center. The heart team
has long had a model for success that involves the participation
of all members of the team who have anything to do
with a patient’s and family’s experience. Together, the
team members are focused on achieving the best possible
outcomes for all patients.
Because team is at the “heart” of what they do, each
year the Heart Center staff members host an annual
meeting to share the team’s accomplishments over the
previous year.
2005: An Interesting Year
In 2005, the Heart Center at ACH tied its record for
heart transplants, was impacted by Hurricane Katrina,
welcomed a new surgeon and performed hundreds of
procedures. These are just some of the highlights from the
center’s 2005 review:
The heart team performed 17 heart transplant procedures
on patients in 2005, tying the hospital’s record
number of transplants set in 1993. Twelve of the transplant
patients were from Arkansas; the remaining five were
out-of-state patients, including Jacques and another
hurricane evacuee. ACH’s involvement in the Hurricane
Katrina evacuation brought many pediatric evacuees to
the hospital, including nine cardiovascular patients.
After 10 months of being without a chief of the
pediatric cardiovascular surgery program, the heart team
welcomed **Dr. Robert D.B. “Jake” Jaquiss on November 1.
2005 Heart Center Statistics
• 7,669 cardiology outpatient visits
• 470 surgical procedures**
• 17 heart transplants
• 2 Berlin Hearts (bridge to transplant)
• 48 patients on ECMO (heart-lung bypass)
• 4/470 30-day mortality rate for surgical procedures
(less than 1%)
**The team was short one surgeon for 10 months; the average
number of procedures is typically around 600.
PATIENTS AND FAMILIES WE HAVE KNOWN
CMN Champion Child Takes
‘Greatest Trip’ of Her Life
Mattie Medlock
When Mattison “Mattie” Medlock was 6 years old,
her mom found a lump on her back, followed by more
lumps under her arms. Her doctor in Atkins referred her
to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed
with a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma
called anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
Mattie underwent a year of aggressive chemotherapy
treatments. Her mom, Dotie Medlock, says she remained
optimistic throughout her time at ACH.
“Mattie would be so sick from chemotherapy, throwing
up and with headaches, but if anyone asked her
how she was, she would always say, ‘good,’”says Dotie.
Russellville Wal-Mart
Sends Mattie Off in Style
Associates at Wal-Mart in
Russellville treated Arkansas
Champion Child Mattie
Medlock to a shopping spree
prior to her Champions Across
America trip. Mattie’s mom,
sister and associates followed
her all over the store as she
picked out some trip essentials
and not-so-essentials, including
the sunglasses she’s sporting
here. Mattie was a good
sister and included sister Marley in on the action,
making sure she also had things like a new suitcase
and some cool shades.
Mattie and her family enjoyed meeting
all the Champion families and making
new friends. An encounter on the first
day at the Atlanta airport brought the
Medlocks together with the Champion
family from Georgia. From left, Mattie
Medlock, Georgia Champion Sarah
Gwaltney and her sister, Anna, and
Marley Medlock.
When Mattie first started traveling to ACH for cancer treatments,
she and her family painted their van with the statement,
“My name is Mattie. I have cancer but it doesn’t have
me.” Now that her treatments are over, when Mattie goes in
for check-ups, the van reads, “I beat cancer, it didn’t beat me.”
While she was undergoing chemotherapy, Mattie even
entered and won first runner-up at a local beauty pageant. At
first, she didn’t want to enter because she had lost her hair,
but a few nights before the pageant she told her mom,
“Mama, I sure am beautiful even without hair.”
Mattie’s spirit and determination in facing her disease were
among the reasons she was chosen as the 2006 Children’s
Miracle Network (CMN) Champion Child to represent
Arkansas.
Champions are selected by children’s hospitals affiliated
with Children’s Miracle Network to act as ambassadors for
children’s health care. They represent the millions of other
children treated annually in children’s hospitals.
In March, Mattie and her family joined other Champions
from across the United States and Canada on a trip to Walt
Disney World, where they participated in the taping of the
2006 Children’s Miracle Network Celebration. The Champions
and their families then traveled to Washington, D.C., to tour
the nation’s capitol and meet with national leaders, including
President Bush.
Champions Across America is sponsored by Foresters, a
financial services organization.
Following are photos taken by Mattie’s family and excerpts
from her journal. Each day, Mattie recorded what she did, who
she met and her favorite part about the day, in her own
words.
Mattie writes about meeting many
famous “people,” including some very
familiar Disney characters that she and
her family encountered. From left, Mickey
Mouse, sister Marley, Goofy, mom Dotie,
Minnie Mouse, Mattie, dad Greg and
Donald Duck.
Mattie got up close and personal
with country music star Tracy Byrd
during a bus trip and at a concert.
The Medlock family was chosen to
ride in the daily parade that takes
place in the Animal Kingdom.“We
were so thrilled to get to be in the
parade because they only choose a
few families each day,” says Dotie
Medlock.“We just sat up in that float
and waved like we were somebody.”
Wednesday, March 15: My first plane ride. Met Sarah and
Anna Champions frum Georgia. Favorite part: seeing the hotel
room and meeting new friends.
Thursday, March 16: Met fams (famous) peple and went to
a cosert (concert) with Leann [Rimes]. Favorite part: Meeting
Mickey, Miny (Minnie), Gufy (Goofy), Donald. Went to the great
big pool. Went down the water slide and had fun.
Friday, March 17: Went to Magic Kingdom. Rode Splash
Mountain. Got very tired and hot. Favorite part: Coming back to
the hotel and swimming in the pool.
Saturday, March 18: Went to Animal Kingdom. Met Mickey
and rode the float in the praed (parade). Met Tracy Byrd and
Steve Young. Favorite part: Meeting Mickey and the float.
Sunday, March 19: We rode the plane to
Washington, D.C., and got to set in the cockpit. Tracy
Byrd rode are bus and plane. Favorite part: Riding the
bus with Tracy Byrd and Brooke [from CMN]. They sang
to us.
Monday, March 20: We went to Capitol Hill and
ate lunch there. Took pictures with the kids.
Tuesday, March 21: We went to the White House.
Went to XM Radio and talked on the radio. We went to
ESPN and played games. Met President Bush.
Wednesday, March 22: We went home by a plane.
Said good-by to all my friends. Favorite part: Nothing. I
didn’t want to leave.
After hard days of
playing at the
Disney parks,
Mattie (right)
enjoyed returning
to the hotel and its
“great big pool”
and water slide
with Marley (left)
and Greg.
In Washington, D.C., the
Champion families visited
all sorts of historic sites,
had lunch on Capitol Hill
and swung by the White
House for a meeting with
the President.Though she
can’t be spotted here, Mattie
Medlock is in the mass of
Champions who crammed
together for a photo opportunity
during their visit.
RESEARCH
When he’s not treating
patients, Dr.Ariel Berlinski
is in the lab trying to figure
out the best ways to deliver
aerosol medication to
children.
Philanthropy Helps
Make Aerosol
Lab Possible
The Pediatric Aerosol Research Laboratory at Arkansas
Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) is one of
only a few academic laboratories in North America
researching the best ways to deliver aerosol medication to
children. It was established, in part, with funding from the
National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and an endowment
from the George Family Fund for Asthma.
Aerosol medication is the primary treatment for children
with asthma and cystic fibrosis; however, much of the
medication testing has been performed in adults, and there
is little information regarding its optimal use in children.
“Children are not small adults, and there are variables
such as age, breathing pattern and cooperation, that must
be considered when a child receives treatment,” says *Dr.
Ariel Berlinski, director of the laboratory. “These medications
have to reach deep inside the lungs to be effective,
so we’re working to improve the amount of medicine that
can get into the lungs.”
Researchers compare and test nebulizers and inhalers
as they come on the market to determine the characteristics
of the aerosol formulas. They use technology that
mimics the breathing patterns of children of different ages,
allowing researchers a more realistic evaluation of the
effects.
“In testing these aerosol medications, we study how
variations in the administration determine changes in the
amount of drug available to the patient, and our research
shows that these differences could lead to a treatment failure,”
says Berlinski. “We can also measure the particle size
of the aerosol. If it’s too big, it fails to enter the lung; if it’s
too small, it may pass in and out of the lung or be delivered
to other organs. Therefore, it’s possible that a child
could be taking medication but never being treated.”
“Dr. Berlinski’s work and the efforts in the
Pediatric Aerosol Research Laboratory at ACHRI is
important work on a crucial area of medical treatment
in these patient groups,” says Dr. Richard Jacobs,
president of ACHRI. “This is another example of how
biomedical research and clinical research are important
in children. For children to be excluded from the
advances in science and medicine by not being
included in this research is unacceptable.”
Berlinski says one of the major hurdles he faces is
finding the funding to continue his research in the
future.
“Although our research is important, it is not one
of the top priorities of either funding agencies or
manufacturers,” Berlinski says. “They are already
selling the nebulizer, the spacer and the inhaler, so
they really don’t have a need for investing.
Philanthropy played a role in establishing our lab, and
I hope it will help us continue with future projects.”
Berlinski says in the future, his research will
incorporate new and innovative technologies to measure
particle size and to study other delivery systems as
these treatments are released into the market.
“I’m mainly a clinician whose time is spent treating
patients, but I also think it’s important to try and
learn more about what we do,” Berlinski says. “It’s
important to me to generate information that will be
useful to our institution and useful to the community
in achieving better outcomes.”
*Ariel Berlinski, M.D., is a pediatric pulmonologist at ACH
and assistant professor, department of pediatrics, UAMS
College of Medicine
GIVING
Amy and Eric
Chilton:
Encouraging Young
Couples to Support ACH
■ Alyssa Anderson
Eric and Amy Chilton chose to establish an
endowment at Arkansas Children’s Hospital
because they knew it would be something their
children — 16-year-old Ally, 11-year-old Jenny
and 6-year-old Drew — could take pride in
many years down the road.
Amy and Eric Chilton describe themselves as
ordinary parents living ordinary lives that center
around their three children, 16-year-old Ally, 11-
year-old Jenny and 6-year-old Drew. But this young
couple’s dedication to Arkansas Children’s Hospital
is anything but ordinary.
Somehow, in between cheerleading practices
and basketball, softball and baseball games, the
Chiltons find the time and inclination to support an
organization they have never even needed to use.
“Fortunately, our children have not been
patients at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, but you
never know,” Amy says. “We’ve had friends whose
kids have been there, some more serious than others.
Our whole lives revolve around our kids, and
when you hear of somebody whose child is very ill,
you think about how much that would rock your
world. I honestly can’t imagine what parents go
through when their child has a serious illness.”
In an effort to make a difference, the Chiltons
established an endowment benefiting cancer patients
at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. They say they made
the decision to support endowment when Libby
Smith, a vice president in the ACH Foundation,
explained that it would be something their children
could see years down the road and something they
could take great pride in as a family.
They chose to support cancer patients as a
tribute to Amy’s best friend, who died in 1999 of
liver cancer.
“We were very best friends,” Amy says. “She
was the maid of honor at my wedding, and she
was there at the hospital when both of my girls
were born. Eric and I had always felt strongly,
from our parents, about the concept of tithing part
of your income. My friend was a school teacher
and had a lot of interest in kids, so that’s why we
decided on Children’s Hospital and on cancer.”
The Chiltons both say that recognition is not
the reason why they support ACH. They only
agreed to be featured in this story because they
thought it might help others — especially younger
couples with children — see the importance of
giving.
“I think sometimes people think you have to
have a large sum to give, and you really don’t,”
Amy says. “Every little bit helps, and it’s just the
feeling that you get — that positive, warm feeling
that you’re making a difference.”
Eric added, “You never know when the money
you contribute may help your own child.”
CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
2006
Miracle Day
Wal-Mart &
SAM’S CLUBS
Tom Montgomery, with the Wal-Mart/SAM’S CLUB
Foundation, poses with former Arkansas Children’s
Hospital patient Jenna King (far right) and her mother,
Kay Beck, who works at the Wal-Mart in Monticello.
“You are the heart and soul of what we do,” said Dr.
Jonathan Bates, ACH president and CEO, to welcome the
200-plus associates and other special guests at the 2006
Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB Miracle Day at Arkansas
Children’s Hospital.
“Your name is all over this place, and what you do
makes an enormous difference for us,” continued Bates.
“We depend heavily on donors like you, and we thank
you.”
Miracle Day is a special day planned each year to honor
Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB associates for their fundraising
efforts during the last campaign year and to kick off efforts
for the next campaign.
The theme of the day, “The Heart of the Matter,” related
to one of the Wal-Mart/SAM’S CLUB 2006 funding priorities,
the purchase of specialty monitors for the ACH Heart
Center.
Dr. Robert Jaquiss, chief of pediatric cardiovascular surgery
at ACH, spoke to guests about the Heart Center and
how their donation of new monitors
will make a difference.
“Your donation will translate to real
lives touched, helped and even
saved,” said Jaquiss. “New technology is
very expensive, and thanks to folks like
you, we are able to stay at the forefront.”
Tom Montgomery, Wal-Mart/SAM’S CLUB corporate
giving manager, spoke to the associates, thanking them
for their efforts in 2005, which resulted in a total donation
of $1,066,106. He also encouraged them to keep
telling the stories of Arkansas Children’s Hospital and
asking for the gift.
“Thanks to the generosity of associates, customers and
members, Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB have raised and
donated more than $15 million to Arkansas Children’s
Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network over the
past 22 years,” said Montgomery. “We are all fortunate to
live in the state of Arkansas, where so many generous
people support our world-class children’s hospital,
Arkansas Children’s Hospital.”
Montgomery introduced Mark Larsen, vice president
and regional general manager for Arkansas and southern
Missouri.
“I am so excited that we are a part of the Arkansas
Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network,” said
Larsen. “This Miracle Day celebration is a wonderful tribute
to our outstanding associates, and the
children we are able to help are precious.
There is no better cause.”
The group also heard from CMN representatives,
received awards for their fundraising
efforts and toured the hospital.
CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
B98.5 Radio Listeners
and Staff Are True
Miracle Makers
Five-year-old Elijah Talley, an ACH
patient fighting cancer, and his mom,
Dawn, shared their story during the
Radiothon, while dad, Britt, looked on.
A tiny girl with bristles of red hair just beginning to
grow back on her head leans into the microphone and
sings a song she just learned: “John Jacob Jingle
Heimer Schmidt.” Radiothon volunteers and others
watching are both laughing and crying. Those listening
to the radio are doing the same thing as they think of
what little 5-year-old Kelly McClain has gone through in
her young life. Kelly was severely burned in a fire at
her home and has spent months in the burn unit at
Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Listeners of B98.5 radio heard Kelly’s story during
the 2006 Champions for Children Radiothon, the second
annual event for the Citadel Communications station.
Radio announcers Scott Thrower, Jeff Matthews,
Steve Medley, Becky Rogers and Randy Cain broadcast
live for three days from the ACH lobby, sharing the stories
of ACH patients, families and caregivers.
Listeners responded to the stories and the pleas for
donations, raising a record $230,000 over the three
days. Much of that money came in the form of “Miracle
Makers” gifts, through which donors committed to
ongoing, monthly donations to the hospital.
Sponsors for the event included presenting sponsor
Wendy’s, Change Angels sponsor Lander’s, cell phone
sponsor Cricket Wireless and wrap-up party sponsor
Embassy Suites.
Five-year-old Kelly McClain shared her story about
being burned in a house fire with B98.5’s Scott
Thrower, as her mother, Joyce, looked on.
Randy Cain, program
director for B98.5
and Citadel
Communications,
accepted a Most
Innovative Montage
award for the station
during the Children’s
Miracle Network
Radiothon Awards,
presented during the
national meeting in
March.
Members of the B98.5 on-air team (from left), Becky Rogers, Jeff Matthews, Scott Thrower and Steve Medley, react as
ACH president and CEO Dr. Jonathan Bates and ACH Foundation staff member Carissa Wagnon reveal the amount of
money raised during the 2006 Champions for Children Radiothon.
Log A Load For Kids Gears
Up for 2006 Fundraising
Arkansas Log A Load For Kids coordinators met in
the Lee and Bob Cress Board Room in Arkansas
Children's Hospital’s new office building in March to
kick off their 2006 fundraising campaign. The group of
30 participants set a goal of $400,000, which will go
toward the Log A Load Imaging Endowment Fund.
Dr. Jonathan Bates, ACH president and CEO,
shared the hospital’s construction and expansion
plans, and Dr. Robert Jaquiss, new chief of pediatric
cardiovascular surgery and holder of the Log A Load
For Kids Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular surgery nurse manager Jean Ann Phillips
(left) shows the Log a Load For Kids committee one of the
two operating rooms in the ACH Heart Center.
Surgery, provided an update on the ACH Heart Center.
After the presentations, the group toured the cardiovascular
surgery unit, pediatric intensive care unit and the
hospital lobby.
Children’s Miracle Network Sponsors:
Grassroots Fundraising Adds Up
Arkansas Children’s Hospital is a proud member
of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), a nonprofit
organization dedicated to helping kids by
raising funds for 170 children’s hospitals across
North America. Children’s Miracle Network funds
raised in Arkansas, north Louisiana, east Texas
and east Oklahoma benefit ACH.
National sponsors for CMN raise money at the
local level with fundraising activities led by
employees and supported by members of the
community. The combined efforts of these sponsors
help the caregivers at ACH provide care,
love and hope every day for our patients and
their families. For their recent Children’s Miracle
Network fundraising campaigns supporting
Arkansas Children’s Hospital, we thank the
our specialized services available to all children in
Arkansas, regardless of a family’s ability to pay,” says
Jennifer Selig, CMN director for Arkansas Children’s
Hospital. “Their grassroots efforts add up quickly and in
2005 resulted in a total donation of more than $2.5 million.”
HEART CENTER
Continued from page 3
Where to Next?
Members of the heart team will continue
to focus on the minimization or
elimination of long-term health issues that
may result from cardiac surgery. Recently
purchased monitors offer new technology
that will help in this area.
Research related to cardiac care will
focus on adults with congenital heart disease
(CHD). Because of better outcomes,
more patients with CHD are surviving to
adulthood, and this has led to a growing
population of adults with CHD, with their
own set of unique problems.
The Role of Philanthropy
Sustaining excellence as the standard
of care in the ACH Heart Center requires
the best facility, staff and equipment. The
key to excelling in all of these areas is
philanthropy.
funding for endowed chairs and programs
that help ACH recruit and
retain the best staff. Wal-Mart and
SAM’S CLUBS, through Children’s
Miracle Network, this year will make
possible the purchase of new cerebral
oximeter monitors that will give staff
members the ability to better care for
cardiac patients.
Each year, these donors are joined
by other contributors who provide
support to the Heart Center and other
areas at ACH, to ensure that our kids
have access to the very best care.
*Robert D.B. “Jake” Jaquiss, M.D. is chief,
pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic
surgery at ACH and professor, department
of surgery, UAMS College of Medicine. He
is also holder of the Log A Load For Kids
Hospital Honors Child Health
Advocate Betty Bumpers
Betty Bumpers was recently honored as the 2006 recipient of the Betty A. Lowe, M.D.Award.
The Lowe Award was initiated in honor of Dr. Lowe and in recognition of her distinguished service to Arkansas Children's Hospital,
UAMS and the children and families of Arkansas. The award recognizes a person who has been an agent of change, a particular leader
who has made a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the children of Arkansas.
Bumpers was cited for her work as the leader of a successful statewide immunization program for children during the time of her
husband’s tenure as governor. She then presented that model at a National Governors Conference, where it was adopted by governors’
wives from many states, including Rosalyn Carter. In 1991, Mrs. Bumpers and Mrs. Carter founded “Every Child by Two” to promote early
childhood immunizations. As a result of their efforts, laws mandating vaccinations at school entry now exist in every state.
The Lowe Award was presented to Betty Bumpers (far right) by the chairman of the three ACH boards (from left): Ron Clark, Research
Institute; Dr. Jonathan Bates, Foundation board chairman and president and CEO of ACH; Chuck Erwin, Hospital, and Dr. Betty Lowe.
