Anesthesia<br />

Loss of the ability to feel pain, caused by administration of a drug or other medical intervention.<br />

Antepartum<br />

Of or occurring in the period before childbirth<br />

Antibody screen<br />

A blood test to detect antibodies against red blood cell antigens.<br />

Apgar scores<br />

A score that assesses the general physical condition of a newborn infant by assigning a value of<br />

0, 1, or 2 to each of five criteria: heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, skin color, and<br />

response to stimuli. The five scores are added together, with a perfect score being 10.<br />

Blood type<br />

Test to determine blood group, i.e., A, B, AB or O<br />

Certified Nurse Midwife<br />

A nurse with specialized education and training in providing care to childbearing women during<br />

all stages of pregnancy including the postpartum period.<br />

Contraception (birth control)<br />

A process that prevents pregnancy by interfering with the normal process of ovulation,<br />

fertilization, and implantation. There are different kinds of birth control that act at different<br />

points in the process.<br />

Contractions<br />

Obstetric volleys of tightening and shortening of the myometrium (uterine muscle), which occur<br />

during labor, cause dilatation and thinning of the cervix and aid in the descent of the infant in the<br />

birth canal.<br />

Delivery<br />

Expulsion or extraction of the infant, placenta and membranes at birth.<br />

D(Rh) Antibody Screen<br />

A blood screening test for presence of IgG antibodies to the Rh D antigen on red blood cells.<br />

D (Rh) Sensitized<br />
