President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Tuesday 8 th September 2009:
Spring is in the air, attendance at meetings is on the rise and generally speaking,
a tremendous buzz and enthusiasm is flowing from our members. For
those who read our local press it is pleasing to see and recognise some of our
members achievements to date.
Congratulations to Lynn Arnold in raising in the vicinity of $ 57,000.00 for the
Archbishop’s Appeal – “Great Chefs of Adelaide Lunch” and to Barbara Derham
who facilitated the services of her students on the day. Ken Gaetjens is obviously in training
for the next Olympics with his amazing athletic abilities in fun runs (perhaps our club can
enter as a group in next years City to Bay!!). Whilst pouring over the real estate section in this
Saturday’s Advertiser it was also pleasing to see our new member, Stephanie Thorpe, with her
beaming smile representing Brock Harcourts as one of their new recruits ‐‐‐ good luck in your
new career.
Rick Harcourt must be sleeping sounder after handover on the “Conservatory Apartments” …..
congratulations to you and your team for what I believe has set the benchmark in Apartment
Living in Adelaide.
Also this week I received an email from our DG Alun Hughes who sadly advised that one of our
previous members, Tim Klarr (also in charge of the Shelterbox for our District) had a severe
heart attack and had a slim chance of surviving but after a 2 hour operation am pleased to say
he is on the road to recovery.
It is now time we get behind Barbara and her team by selling tickets to our next major fundraiser
for the year ‐‐‐ The Melbourne Cup Luncheon at the Grand Chifley. $25.00 from each
ticket sold will be donated to charity together with sales from silent auctions and raffles. If you
know of anyone or anything you can donate towards this day please remember to complete the
flyer at Club meetings.
As part of the overhaul of club administration we are upgrading our Members List and Birthday
details. This is an important means of extracting information and means of communication and
reply upon you to notify us of any changes. Allan Perryman has spent many hours devising a
programme so please either email, telephone or initial the forms distributed at our meetings of
any changes.
“The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want” ….. Ben
This weeks speaker—Pamela Kirkham
Pamela Margaret Kirkham OAM B.A. Dip. Ed. T. Mus.A , A. Mus.A. Cert. Music Accompanying.
Married with 2 daughters and 2 grandsons
Profession ‐ secondary music teacher, now semi‐retired. Teach piano and theory in private
practice. Examiner in piano for University of Adelaide Examinations board (AMEB)
Life member of Girl Guides South Australia. World accredited trainer of leaders.
Vice Chairman of BINSA Committtee of Management.
Became involved with BINSA in1991 when my elder daugher suffered very severe Acquired
Brain Injury (ABI) from a motor vehicle accident.
Last weeks speaker—GLENN COOMBS – PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR
Glenn Coombs & his business partner Pamela Neal were guests of the Adelaide Rotary Club at Tuesday‘s meeting.
They are licensed investigation agents who have operational experience and are Government Accredited for all types
of investigations and security. Their business Tango Investigations offers a variety of investigative services including
fraud, missing persons and surveillance.
Glenn was the spokesman for the company. He explained that he had had over eleven years experience ‐ first practicing
in the UK for 6 years before moving to Adelaide 5 years ago. He joined Tango Investigations as a director in July
this year. The basic licence is obtained through a TAFE College and is given after two years experience. It is difficult
to get a licence as Investigative Services prefer experienced personnel and are loath to take on new graduates.
Training is ongoing.
Glenn ‘s particular interest is investigation of infidelity. He explained how evidence was obtained and the devices
used in gaining such evidence. Cameras the size of a lipstick with wide angle and close range lenses, video cameras
to film evidence and tracking devices on cars or telephones were some of the articles used. The work involves late
hours and is seven days a week.
Payment for services is made whether a result is achieved or not so there is no reason to falsify evidence. The court
readily accepts such evidence as an accurate record of the incident shortly after it occurred, because the information
obtained is recorded whilst it was still clear in the memory of the persons involved. Statements taken long after the
incident can be influenced by other persons and important facts may be forgotten.
Glenn completed his talk by discussing some case studies which were both amusing and sad.
